The following is a rather hasty compilation that may give you a start. I think it is mostly accurate but people were not inclined to give information to ‘officials’, and the information gather was often incorrect for any number of reasons. You will see me struggling with some of this.
Thomas.
GEORGE THOMAS (A.?) HOWE b. 11OCT1843 (ca. 1842-4, OCT1841 in 1911), died Boom Road, Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 23MAR1918 age 77 years, m. Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 11OCT1868 MARY (BARBARA) JANE (ANN) MATCHETT (b. 24MAR1846 (ca. 1846)).
George and Mary are said to have been born in Red Bank, Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB.
A birth record exists for James Iriny? Howe b. Red Bank, Northumberland Co., NB 11MAR1888, s/o George and Barbara Jane (Matchett) Howe. James’, Joseph’s and Josephine’s births were registered at the same time. When Lena’s, Margaret’s and William’s births were registered (at the same time) their mother was Mary Ann Matchett. Either Mary Ann and Barbara Jane were the same person or George was married twice; a matter yet to be resolved. Part of the problem is the two Barbara’s. Barbara Howe, d/o George and Mary Ann (Matchett) Howe, was b. Red Bank 23MAR1891 and ‘Barba’ Jane Howe, d/o George and Barbara Jane (Matchett) b. Red Bank 25MAR1890. It appears that there were two George’s, each married to a Matchett.
If there were two George’s, then one George Thomas Howe b. Boom Road, Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB ca. 1841, died Boom Road, Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 23MAR1918 age 77 years. There was also a George Thomas Howe b. Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia ca. 1857, d. Holmes Lake, Northumberland Co., NB 29DEC1916 age 59 years.
When William J. Howe b. ca. 1873 and a son of George and Mary Howe was married in 1901, a witness was Josephine Howe. This would suggest that Josephine was his sister.
In 1871, in Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB, there was only one George (29) Howe. His wife was Mary (25) and a daughter was Helena (Lena in birth record) (2). George Howe m. Northesk Parish 11OCT1868 Miss Mary Jane Matchett.
In Northesk Parish, in 1881, George (38) and Mary J. (35) had Ellen M. (12), Maggie (10), William J. (8), George H. (4) and David L. (8 months, AUG1880). To the Scots, particularly, ‘Ellen’ and ‘Helen’ were the same name and used interchangeably. Next door was the family of John (68) and ‘Meriah’ (55) Howe, very probably George’s parents.
In Northesk Parish in 1891, George (47) and ‘Marey’ (42) Howe had Maggie (20), William (17), George (14), David (11), ‘Josephen’ (8), ‘Elezebth’ (5), James (3) and Barbara (1). John Howe (82), next door, with a nephew?, Edward Howe (11) was born in NB as was his mother, but his father was from England. At this point, with Josephine a daughter and apparently the sister of William, I have to assume that there is only one George Howe, and that his wife was Mary Jane Matchett. The minister who recorded some births in at least one case (registering at least three births) had her as Barbara Jane Matchett and another as Mary Ann MAtcheet; but Mary Jane Matchett is the most consistent. The question then is whether the two birth records for Barbara/Barbra are for the same person. Although a year apart, they are similar. It is possible that one died in infancy and a second child was given the same name. When married, However, Barbara Jane Howe was b. ca. 1889 suggesting only one daughter probably b. in 1890.
George and Mary J. Howe are in Northesk Parish in 1901. The birth-dates in this census are often incorrect, usually one-year off, but sometimes apparently mere guesses. William J. Howe’s birth-date, for example, is exactly one-year off suggesting the enumerator actually made an effort to get a real date, but make incorrect calculations as to year (long story). Josephine is Mary J., suggesting her full name was Mary Josephine. Elizabeth was ‘Elizebeth’ S., James was James E. and ‘Barberey’ J. was b. 23MAR1890 again suggesting only one daughter with that name. Most significant is that John Howe (2AUG1815) lives with them as George’s father.
By 1911, Mary Jane appears to have died, and George lives with his two sons, David and James. Other members of the family lived nearby.
In 1851, George lived in Northesk Parish with his parents as:
How John M Head 35 Farmer Birth
How Maria F Wife 31 Birth
How George M Son 9 Birth
How Charlotte F Daughter 7 Birth
How Mary F Daughter 5 Birth
How David M Son 3 Birth
In Northesk Parish, in 1861, John Howe/Howes is listed in the agricultural and fisheries schedules. In the nominal census he is transcribed as John ‘House’ (41), but it should be John Howe. He and Maria (55) had George (19), Mary (14), David (12), Elizabeth (10), Edward (6), Catherine (4), Margaret (2) and Ellen (8? Months). There is also a mother-in-law, Charlotte (72 or 73) whose surname is given as Howe, although that seems improbable. I think that she was Charlotte Whiney (62) in 1851, wife of Ebenezer Whitney (78). See:
http://www.theyerxas.ca/yerxa/8susan_note.htmhttp://wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg/index.php/Family:Whitney,_Ebe...)
This would suggest that Maria was a previously unrecognized daughter of Ebenezer and Charlotte (Parker) Whitney. Charlotte died at her son’s home in Northesk Parish 27FEB1868 age 79 years. Possibly John Howe was also from the pre-Loyalist settlement of Maugerville. Perhaps connected to Nathaniel and Mary Howe of that place; with Nathaniel apparently a Loyalist.
In Northesk Parish, in 1851, there were no Barbara Matchett’s. There were 5 Mary’s of which one was age 5 and the other age 6. On page 10 were:
Matchet William M Head 28 Farmer (Prop) Birth
Matchet Mary F Wife 28 Birth
Matchet Mary F Daughter 6 Birth
Matchet Elanor F Daughter 4 Birth
Matchet Elisabeth F Daughter 2 Birth
On page 30 were:
Matchet John M Head 35 Irish Farmer Birth
Matchet Cath F Wife 30 Birth
Matchet Mary F Daughter 5 Birth
Matchet John M Son 3 Birth
The ‘How’ family was on page 12 making Mary (6) the most probable, but that is not a certainty. In 1861, Mary Jane Matchett (15) was the d/o William (38) and Margaret (37) Matchett. In 1825, 1831 and 1832, William Matchett was involved in the administration of the estate of John Fraser of Chatham. This suggests an earlier generation. At:

Newcastle, Newcastle Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 30AUG1930 age 42 years, m. SADIE MAY JOHNSTON (JOHNSTONE) (b. Bridgetown, Newcastle Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 14MAR1893, d. Newcastle, Newcastle Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 25FEB1961 age 67 years), d/o William and Jessie (McKay) Johnston.
James died partially of heart and kidney illnesses but apparently an accident was contributory. On his death record is a note that the “doctor refuses to give further information”. Also, the information on his death record gives his parents as George and Mary Howe.
Sadie’s father, William, was from Halifax, NS while her mother was from Newcastle, NB.
One Jessie McKay was a d/o Oliver McKay and m. Newcastle 11NOV1881 William D. Johnston/Johnstone.
Another couple were William (27NOV1871) and Jessie (26OCT1870) Johnston in Chatham Parish in 1901 with a son, George (12JUN1897).
Sadie Johnstone (14MAR1893), however, was in Newcastle Parish in 1901, with parents, Wm. (15APR1840) and Jessie (10FEB1856) and brothers Robert (27APR1882) and ‘Pearly’ (13APR1887) Johnstone. Next door were Oliver (27DEC1817) and his daughter, Sarah (17JUN1870) McKay; so I assume that this William and Jessie were the same married in 1881. Also in the Johnstone family, indicated as a son and two daughters, were Freeman Matheson (6JUN1890), ‘Gladas’ Matheson (1AUG1895) and Bertha Matheson (14JUN1899). Freeman Anderson Matheson (b. ca. 1876?), when married in 1907, was the son of Thomas and Janet Matheson. His death record (b. 25MAY1876, d. 27OCT1954) gives his parents as Thomas and ‘Janette’ (Coltart) Anderson. Freeman D. Johnston (15AUG1889-26FEB1955) was the son of William and Jessie (McKay) Johnston.
Next door to William and Jessie Johnstone in 1901 was the family of John and Annie Matheson. I feel that either Freeman, Gladys and Berth should be their children or, more probably, Freeman, Gladys and Berth are William and Jessie’s children. Examining the original shows this last to be the case, and the transcription giving their surnames as Matheson is incorrect. For example, Bertha Johnston (b. ca. 1899), when married in 1917 gave her parents as William and Jessie Johnston.
J. BARBARA JANE HOWE b. Red Bank (Boom Road), Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 23MAR1890 (25MAR1891, ca. 1889, 23MAR1890 in 1901, MAR1890 in 1911), m. 1st Northumberland Co., NB 26MAR1908 RUSSELL MATCHETT (b. ca. 1886 (SEP1888 in 1911)) s/o Herbert and Sarah Matchett; m. 2nd 29OCT1910 ROBERT A. HENDERSON (b. Halcomb, NB ca. 1886; m. 1st _____), s/o David and Margaret Henderson.
