I'm looking for help with a Mrs Sarah MCLEAN (maybe MACLEAN) from Loggieville, New Brunswick, Canada.
All I know is she was named on an official form to do with circumstances of death concerning my Grandfather James CRAIG of Nelson, NB who died 1917 in France and is in Aix Noulette Cimitrie Commune (Extension), Aix Noulette, Pas - de - Calais.

I expect she would be family somehow but here I'm stumped.

Thanks for any help,

James.

A little search in in the New Brunswick Archives and census indicates that James was a widow and his children where with his deceased wife's family in 1911. Hence Mrs Sarah McLean listed on his death record.

Attestation papers of James Craig gives eldest son as next of kin William Edgar Craig age 8 on 24 Sept 1914

SARAH (SADIE) KENNEDY (b. Wallace Harbour, NS (Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB?) 26DEC1860 (DEC1859 in 1911), d. Loggieville, Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 6MAR1957 age 96 years, 2 months and 8 days), m. 1st WILLIAM DALEY (DEALY) (b. Stonehaven, Restigouche Co., NB ca. 1850); m. 2nd Kent Co., NB 1MAY1905 ALEXANDER (ALEX) McLEAN (b. Hardwick Parish, Northumberland Co., NB MAY1857; m. 1st MARY _____?).
Sarah was the daughter of John Kennedy (b. Scotland) and of Jane Law (b. Ireland).
In Chatham Parish in 1901 Sarah Daley was a widow. Nearby lived Stephen 'Dealey' b. 9JUN1850; possibly a brother-in-law. In 1891, William (41) and Sarah (31) 'Daily' lived next to Stephen Daily (40) and family. On the other side was the family of Alexander (35) and Mary (34) McLean. In 1891 Sarah was b. NB which contradicts her death registration where her son, Melvin, stated she was born in Nova Scotia.
Sarah (22) and William (30) Daley were both b. NB in Chatham Parish in 1881. Next door was Steph Daley (28) and family.
In 1871, 'Stephan' Daily (16) was the son (or grandson?) of John (73) and Mary (44) Daily in Bathurst, Gloucester Co., NB with John b. Ireland and Mary b. NB. William, however, appears to be William Daley, age 19, s/o a widow, Johanna Daley (40, b. Ireland) also in Bathurst in 1871. Johanna (b. ca. 1831) may have been Joanna Daley (b. ca. 1829) wife of Michael Daley (ca. 1825) in Addington Parish, Restigouche Co., NB in 1851. Both were given as b. in NB.
Sarah, in her 2nd marriage, is indicated a having been born in Sussex which I take to mean Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB. I do not find a Sarah or Sadie Kennedy of the right age with parents, John and Jane, in New Brunswick in 1871. There is, in Wallace, Cumberland Co., NS, a Sarah Kennedy age 12 working for William M, and Elizabeth Carlyle. Interestingly Sarah was b. in New Brunswick. This may be the Wallace Harbour that Melvin referred to but she was actually b. in NB. There were other Kennedy's in Wallace, from Scotland, but establishing a relationship may be tricky.
There was, in Mill Hill, Cumberland Co., NS in 1871, a Samuel Law (72) and wife, 'Rosan' (77) from Ireland with members of their family nearby. They apparently did have a daughter, Jane, but at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nscumber/message/40490
it is suggested that Jane married a Thomas Kirkpatrick and that 'Rosan' was Rosamund Stewart.
Children:
1. ETHEL MAY DALEY b. ca. 1879.
2. ALVARD (ALWARD) DALEY b. 24DEC1880.
3. CLARA DALEY b. Black Brook (Loggieville), Northumberland Co., NB 27APR1883.
4. SYBIL WINNIFRED DALEY b. 16APR1884, m. 22SEP1903 JAMES CRAIG.
5. WILLIAM DALEY b. 10MAY1886.
6. MELVIN DALEY b. 6OCT1891 (OCT1892 in 2011).
7. LAURA DALEY b. 2APR1894.
8. WINFIELD DALEY b. 26JUL1896 (JUN1897).
9. EVA DALEY b. 2MAY1899.
J. DAVID McLEAN b. JAN1901.

It appears I am not the first to suspect that Sarah Kennedy in 1871 in Cumberland Co., NS was Sadie Daley/McLean. See:

This:

could have been useful.

Jeannette,

Thank you for your very helful response Now, I did have some of the info about James but there I began to stumble.
I see a lot of information to go through here which should keep me busy a while.
May I take it you are not connected but did this as a volunteer?

James.

Thomas, marvellous, so thanks very much.

Thanks for your second message also.

I see much to read and digest here and am impressed that so much is accessible. I guess the adage "Easy when you know how" springs to mind.

There are certainly 'many tangled ......'

Thanks so much,

James.

I have my own surname interests in the Northumberland Co., NB area. I find that the families marry and new names come in to the tree. I also help where I can.
I believe you will find James family and Sybil's family in the 1901 cenus at http://www.automatedgenealogy.com
Probably further back at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1911/ind...
You can also get 1851-1871-1881-1891-1901 census there also.
I could not find a death certificate for James wife. It appears she died between 1908 and 1911
When you need more help just ask , I am sure some one has the info or knows where to look.
Good luck iuck in your hunt.
Jeannette

James wife died in Manitoba from an illness I believe caused by negligence at the hospital in Brandon. Some equipment was left inside her following surgery.
She is buried in Margaret/Minto.
James had gone to MB to seek work.

David McLean was not the son of Alex McLean and Sarah (Kennedy) Daley. David was the son of Alexander's 2nd wife, Margaret Bonnell.

I am interested in any information, especially photos, of Sarah and Alexander, as Alexander was my great-grandfather and I've no photos of him and would like to learn more about his life in New Brunswick.
