There are multiple Dunham lines in the region. Land Grants were given as reward for military service - e.g. war of 1812 and these grants dispersed the dunhams in new brunswick further.

To clear up a little bit of the confusion :

1. Daniel Carey Dunham originally of Charlotte County, was widowed and some of his children were dispersed into neighboring households - e.g. michael and elizabeth that you note in your post.

2. Manoah Dunham was an illegitimate child of the daughter of Daniel Carey Dunham - therefore no father is listed on his death certificate.

The expert on this line is Richard Thorne. Nearly everything I know this line came from his work. His user name is RGThorne if you would like to contact him to clear things up.

Jeff Dunham
Portland, Oregon, USA
http://www.dunham-singletary.org

Got this from another source:

'Date November 19 1887
County Saint John
Place Saint John
Newspaper The Daily Telegraph

As the steamer proceeded down (Belleisle) Bay, the reporter was told by one of the passengers how he had heard from Mary BRITTAIN wife of William BRITTAIN, one of the early loyalist settlers of Tennant's Cove, of her experience previous to their departure from the revolted colonies. She had walked in blood to her ankles and had been stripped to her waist before a regiment of soldiers to compel her to disclose the place where her husband was hiding. They died within eleven hours of each other and were buried in one grave at Tennant's Cove.'

If you replace MARY with CHRISTIANNA, it makes sense. Otherwise William's mother and father (Mary and William)never came to NB from what I can see.

Thanks for your thoughts Suzanne. I've thought the same thing - the most likely burial spot is St Paul's at Oak Point. Still searching though.

I came across a small tidbit the other day, and I have promptly forgotten where I saw it. It led me to believe that William and his wife may actually be buried at Tennant's Cove. However, a look at the documented burials there still doesn't list William or his wife.

Elizabeth w/o Joseph Brittain d. 23 Apr 1808 ae 30 yrs

Since Joseph and Elizabeth died 5 years before William, then it proves this cemetery was in use when William and Christianna died. They were my 5th great grandparents. I have never found proof of their burial place (at this for 40 years) but I'd be willing to bet they are at St. Paul's. They were staunch anglicans. Probably their stone fell over and was broken and discarded by a mower many years ago. The old white ones have become very prone to this unfortunately.
Sorry not better news,
Suzanne Carter

William Brittain - 1754-1813

Looking for information on the burial site of William Brittain, 1754-1813. From what I've been able to find, he was born in New Jersey and came to New Brunswick in the fall of 1783 with his brothers James and Joseph aboard the 'Duke of Richmond'. He was married to Christianna Moody and they lived in Greenwich Parish, Kings County NB. They both passed away in 1813. There was a notice by Daniel F Johnson in the Saint John City Gazette April 5th 1813 stating that 'd. Tuesday, remains of William BRITTAIN, Greenwich, Kings Co. and his wife were interred in one grave, both well advanced in years not far from 60. (Both) fell sacrifice to pleuricy within a few hours of each other.'

William's brother James was buried at the Oak Point Cemetery, but I can find no record of where William and his wife were buried.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I hired a researcher a decade and a half ago for the land records. In a 1977 letter, the rector of St. Paul's wrote their church records did not begin until 1819, a generation after information I am seeking. I even corresponded with Daniel Johnson in the early 1990s for newspaper extracts. However, information about those three daughters remain elusive. I am hoping that perhaps a family Bible record or something else might be found as new records become available. Never know when someone else will hear about a newly available record, so I periodically ask. I have been researching this family and their many descendants since 1965.

Thank you Suzanne, however I am the 'dbfritch' who submitted the record (several decades ago) about which you wrote, along with a short paper on-file at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick titled "Fritch Canadian Lineage". So, I am aware of Catherine (the fourth daughter about whom I have much data) and the the rest of the family. It is just those three daughters for whom I have never been able to find any information (marriage, death, or whatever) after searching all records from the time period.

Any ideas for marriage records in the Hampton area between 1780-1800? I am seeking the given names and marriages of three Fritch daughters (of John and Catherine Fritch) during that period. These marriages would be before the start of local church records and I have found nothing in newspaper extracts. Any suggestions or the identify of these three women would be helpful.

I am interesting in gathering data on the Proctor families in Kings Co... namely though that descend from John Proctor.

The line that I am researching is as follows:
1. John Proctor
2. William Proctor (Eliza Parlee)
3. John Proctor (Catherine McEwen)
4. Garfield Proctor (Margaret Lottie Richardson)

Most of the family is buried in the cemeteries at Sussex Corner. It appears John Proctor is buried with his son George and George's wife Eliza.?

I cannot find them on the census records anywhere. Maggie was married to a Stillman in Sackville, NB in 1911 with two boys then remarried in 1913 in Amherst, NS to a McFarland- she was institutionalized in Pugwash, NS and then moved to Ontario where she passed away. I would like to know if anyone knows where she went in Ontario and where her family came from.

There was a John DeBow b. ca. 1813 who m. Anne McDonald (b. ca. 1823). He had a sister, Elizabeth DeBow b. 7APR1823, one of triplets. They were children of William and Elizabeth (McDonald) DeBow. It seems to me that Elizabeth, Jr. would have ample opportunity to marry a McDonald.

The following is a bit of a hasty and very incomplete addition to another file but may be useful.

John DeBow was the s/o:

2. WILLIAM DeBOU b. ca. 1787, d. ca. 18JAN1871 age 84 years, bur. St. Peter's Anglican Church Cem., Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB, m. ELIZABETH MacDONALD (b. ca. JUL1784, d. Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB 27(or 29)APR1873 age 88 years and 9 months, bur. St. Peter's Anglican Church Cem., Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB).

This suggests a rather lengthy connection between the two families. William was the s/o the Loyalist:

JAMES DeBOW (s/o Lawrence and Deborah (Robbins) DeBow) b. NJ ca. 1754, d. Hampton Parish, Kings Co., NB NOV1833 (will made 18JUL1833, probated 29NOV1833) age 79 years, m. HULDA EAMONS (or EMMONS) (b. ca. 1753-4, d. Prince William St., Saint John, Saint John Co., NB (or, less likely, French Village, Hampton Parish, Kings Co., NB) 11MAR1847 age 94 years), possibly a d/o or widow of John Emmons who arrived with the Smith Company in 1783.
Served with the 1st Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers. (Some say he served with the Queen's Rangers).

Thomas.

28. ELIZABETH (ELIZA) JANE DeBOW (triplet) b. 7APR1823, m. HENRY McDONALD (b. ca. 1824, d. Hammond Parish, Kings Co., NB 29JUN1897 age 73 years).
"New Brunswick Reporter and Fredericton Advertiser", Fredericton, 13APR1892:

A few days a correspondent of the Halifax 'Herald' wrote that Abraham DIDDOR, Isaac DIDDOR and Jacob DIDDOR were children of one birth and claims them to be the oldest set of triplets in the world. Upham (Kings Co). N.B. can beat them all to pieces, for Richard DEBOO, William DEBOO and Elizabeth DEBOO, born in 1823, we claim are the oldest set of triplets in the world today. Mr. and Mrs. DeBoo left ten children; all are still living. Eight of them are within two miles, the oldest is in his 80th year and the youngest is in his 62nd. They are all strong and healthy looking people.

There were not that Many DeBow's/DeBou's and they were one family, so if an Eliza Jane DeBow b. ca. 1823 married in Kings Co., NB Henry McDonald, then I would think the Elizabeth above was probably she.
Henry 'Mcdonald' (47) lived in Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB in 1871. Eliza (45) and he had children: James (24), Elmira (20), 'Agusta' (18), Richard (15), Thomas (12), Alonzo (6) and William (10). They lived next to the family of John (59) and Ann (49) DeBow. This John is the same whom I would surmise was Eliza's elder brother, and Anne, it seems, may have been Henry's sister. Since, in Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB in 1851, there was only one McDonald family:

McDonald Richard	M	Head 56	Native	Farmer/Prop	Birth
McDonald Sarah	F	Wife 48	Native Birth
McDonald Henry M	Head 27	Native	Farmer/Prop	Birth
McDonald Elizabeth	F	Wife 28	Native Birth
McDonald James	M	Son 3	Native Birth
McDonald Elmira	F	Daughter 1	Native Birth

Clearly Henry (ca. 1824) is Henry (ca. 1824) in 1871 and Elizabeth (ca. 1823) is Eliza (ca. 1826) in 1871. It follows that Richard and Sarah McDonald are likely Henry's parents. Ann DeBow (ca. 1822) could well be Richard and Sarah's daughter, although this is less certain. Richard McDonald, Jr. and Sarah Willegar were both of Springfield Parish, Kings Co., NB when they married 29NOV1821. It would appear that her brother, John Willegar, m. 13OCT1815 his sister, Jane McDonald, in Springfield Parish. Henry Willegar was a witness. According to the New Brunswick Genealogical Society, "First Families", website at:
http://nbgs.automatedgenealogy.com/firstfamilies/FAMILY-McA-...

MCDONALD: Richard McDonald b. c1757, d. after Feb 1841, s/o Thomas McDonald and Mary Williams: m. c1783 Deborah Belyea b. 1756, d. 7 Mar 1837 d/o Henry Belyea and Englete Storm: came to NB in 1783 as Loyalists: settled in Springfield Parish, Kings County:
Children:
1) Elizabeth McDonald born Jul 1784, died 27 Apr 1873, m. c1809 William DeBow b. 1786, d. 18 Jan 1871:
2) Margaret McDonald b. c1787, m. 24 Nov 1814 John Burgess born c1786:
3) Mary/Polly McDonald born c1789, married 13 May 1821 William Robert Duncan b. c1790:
4) Ann McDonald b. c1790, d. after 1851, married c1810 Gilbert O’Dell born 1780, d. 27 May 1854:
5) Jane McDonald born c1791, d. 26 Jul 1863, m. 13 Oct 1815 John Willigar b. - , d. 1851:
6) Richard McDonald b. c1795, d. 29 Dec 1863, m. Sarah Willigar b. c1796, died 1 Jan 1881:
7) William McDonald b. c1796, married 1 Jul 1819 Sarah White born c1801:
8) John McDonald b. c1799, died unmarried 4 Mar 1825:
9) Deborah McDonald m. 20 May 1824 Jacob Reicker b. - , d. before 1851.
Source: MC80/2354 Saint John Branch, NBGS: Arrivals 99: our first families in New Brunswick, page 183.

At a guess, this would probably make Elizabeth DeBow (Eliza Jane DeBow?) and Henry McDonald 1st cousins therefore certainly they knew each other.
Children:
281. JAMES McDONALD b. ca. 1847-8.
Possibly James MacDoanld b. 1846, d. 1912, buried Union Cemetery, Kings Co., NB, m. Annie _____ (b. 1859, d. 1945, buried Union Cemetery, Kings Co., NB).
282. ELMIRA McDONALD b. ca. 1850-1, m.? JOHN NELSON.
283. AUGUSTA E. McDONALD b. ca. 1851-3, d. Kings Co., NB 29JAN1927 age 75 years, m. ELISHA O'DELL.
284. RICHARD McDONALD b. ca. 1855-6, d. 1919, buried St. Peter's Anglican Church Cemetery, Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB, m. LILLIAN _____ (b. 1856, d. 1921, buried St. Peter's Anglican Church Cemetery, Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB).
285. THOMAS McDONALD b. ca. 1859-64?, m. Kings Co., NB 29MAY1900 GERTRUDE GRAY (b. ca. 1881), d/o Benjamin Cecil and Sarah Jane (DeBow) Gray.
When married, Thomas was of Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB and Gertrude was of Elgin Parish, Albert Co., NB. Gertrude's mother, Sarah Jane (DeBow) Gray was very likely Sarah DeBow [213], Thomas' 1st cousin. Thomas and Gertrude, then, were likely 1st cousins once removed.
When marry, Thomas gave his age as 36 years. He names his parents as Hy. and Eliza Jane (DeBow) McDonald, so there is no question but that he is the same Henry. Perhaps he felt that a 36-year old groom marrying a 19-year old bride seemed more 'presentable' that would a 41-year old groom.
286. WILLIAM McDONALD b. ca. 1861.
287. ALONZO ARNOLD VAIL (W.?) McDONALD b. Kings Co., NB 8OCT1865 (ca. 1865-6), d. 6AUG1845 age 79 years, 11 months and 29 days, m. 1st Saint John Co., NB AGNES GODSOE; m. 2nd Kings Co., NB 4MAY1896 IDA MAY GRAY (GREY) (b. Goshen, Elgin Parish, Albert Co., NB 12MAY1874), d/o Benjamin Cecil and Sarah Jane [213?] (DeBow) Gray.
Curiously, Alonzo's son, John R. MacDonald, gave Alonzo's parents as Michael and Liza MacDonald. There was, for example, no Michael McDonald/MacDonald in Kings Co. in 1871. There was an Alonzo McDonald b. ca. 1864 in Fredericton in 1871, s/o Chase and Elizabeth McDonald. He d. Carleton Co., NB 31JUL1942.
Hi Maureen,
Edward Hastings was born (according to 1901 census)May 1821 in Ireland. He died 1905 and was buried at Hampstead - in the Clarke family cemetery, I think. He was married to Rhoda Clarke 6 May 1858. She was born in Hampstead Parish, Queens Co. on 27 Oct 1829 & died 9 Oct 1908 at Hampstead. They had:
1. William - no info except that he supposedly lived in Oakland, CA where he had a hotel & race horses - wife & 2 children died young
2. Thomas Connor b. 31 Jan 1959; d. 5 May 1944 in Kings Co. - buried in Fernhill Cem., Saint John - m. Sarah Althea Sherwood - 6 children
3. Ernest E. b. c1867 - supposedly married with no family - had a store in San Francisco with brother Guilford which survived the earthquake - 1910 census for San Fran. lists him as single, dry goods mnerchant, b. in Canada & immigrated 1887
4. James Luther b. 6 Apr 1868, Salisbury, NB; d. 22 Jun 1955 - m. 1901 to Mabel Alice Smith - 7 children
5. Gilford b. c1875 - in San Francisco (as Gilbert in 1910) with brother - still there as dry goods merchant in 1920 - possibly unmarried

The information on William, Ernest & Gilford (execpt for census) is mostly from a conversation I had years ago with Florence Stairs, d/o James Luther.

If you'd like to correspond more on these folk and the Connor connections, please contact me directly at elliojo@nb.sympatico.ca
Thanks, John.
I do not know why I started a file on the Jones' family except that that I was fascinated by Zebulon's forename. Generally I avoid surnames such as 'Smith' as being too mind-boggling. It has been useful at times and getting the early generations is always a problem

Thomas.

Just came across this interesting exchange - am descended from Thomas & Mercy (Jones) Connor through their 3rd daughter, Sarah (Connor) Palmer.
Joseph Palmer was married to 2 of the Connor daughters - first to the 2nd dau., Nancy (bride, mother & corpse within a year), and then to the 3rd dau., Sarah. The Joseph living with Thomas & Mercy Connor was the only child of Nancy.
Mary (Connor) Clarke was indeed the eldest dau. of Thomas & Mercy - and mother of Rhoda (Clarke) Hastings.
The full family of Thomas & Mercy (Jones) Connor was as follows:
1. Mary (1808) m. Wm. L. Clarke - 6 children
2. Nancy (1810) m. Joseph Palmer - 1 son
3. Sarah (1812) m. Joseph Palmer - 10 children
4. John (c1813) m. Charlotte Mary McKenzie - 1 dau.
5. Mercy (1817) m. David McKenzie - 10 children
6. Rev. Thomas (1817) m. 3 times - 4 children
7. Catherine (c1820) m. George Morrisey - 5 children
8. Zebulon (1824) m. Mary Ann Worden - 4 children
I have some additional info on the 5 sons of Edward & Rhoda (Clarke) Hastings as well

it is a mix.. a lot of the Cunninghams repeated the naming

Thomas b 1806 was married to Ann Cranston. Thomas was a brother to Hugh who has three sons Samuel b 1823, John b 1829 and Thomas b 1831(family came when Thomas was 6 months old and family settled in Cedar Camp area, of Kings Co)
John is the father of Shelia's William John Cunningham b 1857.

Thomas b abt 1806 is buried in Kirk Hill Cem. Sussex, close to my Hugh. I assume he is a brother to Hugh and also a Margaret b abt 1807 who married Patrick Slattery. (all lines I think remained Catholic except Hugh's line)

Margaret I also assume was a sister as she immigrated same year as Hugh and settled a few grants from Hugh in Cedar Camp.

In the 1871 census of Upham Parish, Kings Co, NB, Thomas (65) and Ann (55) Cunningham were both b. Ireland. Thomas was a stone mason. Children were William (24), Sarah (19), 'Rachael' (16) and Mary (14); and there was a William Scott (12). The children were all b. NB.
Thomas Cunningham (45) in 1851 in Upham Parish was unmarried and living with (and likely working for) Andrew and Catherine Sherwood.
Ann Cunningham, 2nd d/o Thomas Cunningham of Upham Parish, m. Campbell Settlement, Kings Co., NB 15AUG1867 J. C. Upham, a merchant and a major in the 3rd Battalion, 'King's' (i.e., local militia?). This was likely Cutler Upham (42) a storekeeper in 1871, with a wife, Anna (30, Irish). If her father was the same Thomas in 1851, then he was married before 1851. Cutler Upham b. ca. 1829 may have been Joshua Upham b. ca. 1829, s/o Joshua and Charity (Fowler) Upham, living only 3 or 4 households from Thomas Cunningham in 1851. Elsewhere, Annie (Cunningham) Upham is given as b. ca. 1834, d. Lewiston, ME.
Thomas Cunningham may have been the same who d. Ward's Creek, Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB 13NOV1889 age 83 years, b. County Tyrone, Ireland ca. 1806.
'Rachael' b. ca. 1855 in 1871 may have been the Rachel B. Cunningham who m. John Walker and was living in Sussex Parish in 1872-8. 'Rachiel' Walker was b. ca. 1856 in 1881, so she seems to have been the same.
Sarah b. ca. 1852 may have been Sarah Jane Cunningham, the wife of James Marshall, and lived in Ward's Creek, Kings Co., NB in 1894. In 1901, Sarah J. Marshall was b. 5OCT1852. This may be why Thomas Cunningham d. in Ward's Creek. His wife, Ann, may have been the Ann Cunningham who d. Sussex Parish 11MAY1900. In Sussex Parish, in 1891, Ann Cunningham (75) lived with James 'Marshal' (24), James' wife, Jane (38) and next door to John (42) and Rachel (36) Walker.

It would appear that William Cunningham b. ca. 1857 was the s/o Thomas Cunningham, b. Co. Tyrone, Ireland ca. 1806, d. 13NOV1889, and Ann _____ (b. Ireland ca. 1816, d. 11MAY1900).

Thomas.

Another trail that goes nowhere but that is intriguing begins with the headstone transcription:

Name DUNHAM, Daniel C
Born --------
Died 1864-Feb-22
Age 2 Years
Birth Place	--
Place of Death	--
Relationship	s/o Samuel C & Phebe T Dunham
Cemetery Wickham, Queens County

The 1861 census of Johnston Parish indicates that Samuel Carey (38) and Phoebe (31) Dunham had children Michael Butler Dunham (11), Abraham (8), Rebecca Elizabeth (4) and Isaac (2.)
In the 1871 census of Studholm Parish, Kings Co. I noted: Yet another stray is Elizabeth Dunham (12) a 'servant' to David and Sarah Johnston. Even still another, on the same page as Elizabeth, is Michael P. Dunham (18). Possibly Michael Butler Dunham b. Johnston Parish, Queens Co., NB 13NOV1850 (ca. 1852), d. 8APR1928, s/o Samuel E. and Phoebe ( 'Ficky', Feeby?) (Thorne) Dunham.
That Samuel Carey Dunham would name a son, Daniel C. suggests a kinship to the Daniel C. Dunham in Studholm Parish in 1851. I know that it is 'Name's-the-same-Genealogy'. Added to this, Samuel Carey Dunham is given as a s/o Daniel Carey and Elizabeth M. (Wright) Dunham. David Johnston Dunham (ca. 1829) is also a s/o Daniel Carey and Elizabeth M. (Wright) Dunham, as speculated before. Daniel Carey Dunham is given as b. Charlotte Co., NB ca. 1793, but the 1851 census has him b. ca. 1803. Also, Michael P. Dunham is also given as Daniel C.'s son, likely based on proximity based on the 1851 census but, again, Michael P. appears to be Samuel C.' son.

At:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUNHAM/2007-04...
is:

"Hi Hazel, Manoah Dunham was the son of Mary "Molly" Dunham, the daughter of Daniel Carey Dunham and Elizabeth Wright. Manoah was born 19 Nov 1851 and died 24 Nov 1922 in Havelock. His death certificate lists no father but does identify Mary as his mother. It is my understanding that he had a full sister, Patience Dunham, married to Asa Fillmore Ryder and a half-brother, Joseph C. Dunham, married to Alice "Elsie" Perry. There is a substantial community "memory" concerning the fathers of these three children. I am not aware of what became of Mary "Molly" Dunham but Molly is living in the family of Jonathan and Mary (Perry) Hicks in the 1851 Salisbury Parish, Westmorland Co Census. This census was conducted in March of that year. She is working as a domestic at 18 years of age. Also working as a laborer in the same family is Gardiner Perry, s/o Wesley and Mary (Humphreys) Perry, age 25. Gardiner is a nephew of Mary (Perry) Hicks but is not identified as such."

At:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrun...

"My Dunham line goes to Daniel Carey Dunham and Elizabeth M. Wright in Kings County, New Brunswick. I did the DNA testing and now know that this (my) line goes back to Deacon John Dunham.
"I have not yet been able to fill the gap between Daniel Carey Dunham and the known descendants of Deacon John Dunham. Sure hope someone out there can provide some useful information."

Apparently the theory was that Daniel Carey Dunham came from Charlotte Co. as he was (supposedly) a s/o Asher Dunham of that place. At;

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrun...

is the following:

"Asher Dunham is not the father of Daniel Carey Dunham or any other Dunham's born near St George, NB Canada during this time.
"The theory that Asher Dunham had many children from the St George area is disproven by Skip Dunham's DNA test and recently reconfirmed by my father's recent DNA test - my father is a direct descendant of William Hinchman Dunham, who is said to be the brother of Daniel Carey Dunham.
"As Skip said in his reply from 2006 - The DNA test shows that this line is descendant from Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth, MA whereas Asher Dunham is known to be descendant from Jonathan Dunham alias Singletary (he is a Singletary who took the name Dunham for unknown reasons). These DNA tests prove that we are not related to Asher Dunham of Woodbridge, NJ. "

William Hinchman Dunham may well be the William 'Dunkam' (ca. 1820) also in Studholm Parish in 1851; although that may also have been a son.

This started for me with, "Butternut Ridge Loyalist & Adjoining Cemetery, Butternut Ridge, Havelock Parish", compiled by Mrs. E.Raymond (Myrtle) Perry, of Havelock, Kings Co, NB in October 1975.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbkings/Have/ki-e04.html

DUNHAM:
= James Dunham 1845 - 1910
= Manoah Dunham 24 Nov 1922 ae 71 yrs
h/w Amanda M. Ryder 15 Apr 1931 ae 77 yrs
Fred R. Dunham 3 Mar 1908 ae 23 yrs
= Roland D. Dunham 1889 - 1949
h/w Pearl E. Plume 1892 - ....
= John Dunham 1871 - 1955
h/w Laura Scribner 1874 - 1935
= Joseph C. Dunham 1855 - 1915
Alice C. Dunham 1854 - 1922
= Lester Dunham 1898 - 1964
h/w Lottie B. 1898 - 1946
= children of L. & L. Dunham:
Arnett 1932 - 1933
Mary J. 1930 - 1930

I noted, in particular that Joseph C. Dunham and James Dunham were Manoah's contemporaries and theorized that they were brothers. Above it is suggested that Joseph C. Dunham was his half brother. Joseph C. Dunham b. 1855, d. 1915 would be Joseph Dunham b. ca. 1856 in the 1871 census of Havelock Parish, Kings Co., NB, living with Hazen Thorne (23) and possibly with, or next to, Caleb (25) and Martha (29) Thorne. Caleb Thorne is likely a s/o Michael and Deborah (Colpitts) Thorne. His wife was Martha J. Keith.
I have difficulty finding Joseph C. Dunham and especially James Dunham at times. For example I can find neither in 1901. Joseph Dunham (36) and Elsie (36) are in Havelock Parish in 1891 with a son, Cecil (9).Cecile, in 1911, is James C. (AUG1881), s/o Joseph C. (OCT1854) and Alice C. (JAN1854) Dunham. Alice's father, John Perry (DEC1911) also lives with them. For James (1845-1910), except for his headstone above, I can find nothing.

By 1895 Asa Fillmore Ryder (b. Havelock Parish ca. 14JUL1849, d. 17NOV1924) is married to Eliza Levene (Lavinia) Keirstead and living in Canaan Forks, Queens Co. He was a s/o Simeon and 'Lombosine?' (Tamzin) (Perry) Ryder. In Havelock Parish in 1871 he is transcribed as Asa 'Royder' (21) with a wife, 'Patiance' (19) living a few households from Joseph Dunham (15). He is a widower by 1881 living next to his parents. Asa Ryder m. Havelock Parish 8NOV1870 Patience Dunham.

Thomas.

Re: Manoah Dunham; New Brunswick, Canada

Suzanne's guess is a really good one. I have been looking at the Dunham's and they are very perplexing. I have numerous, disjointed scraps so far, but nothing definite. One such is:

I get the general impression that the Dunham's in the civically complex area of Butternut Ridge may not only be one family, but more widely settled as well. Lucinda Dunham, visiting relatives (presumably) in Indiantown, b. ca. 1845, appears to be a d/o Samuel and Mary Ann (Briggs or London depending on whom you believe) Dunham and to have resided in a parish of Queens Co., NB most likely Hampstead Parish. A proximity to Greenwich Parish, Kings Co., NB is suggested by a baptism, probably in the Anglican church at Oak Point:

= Dunham, Samuel / Mary Ann / ... / William / 1838 Sep 1 / .... ... 11 / ... / Greenwich

William (30) Dunham and a wife, Ann (22) appear as 'Dunkam' in the transcription of the 1851 census of Studholm Parish. There is, in Studholm Parish in 1851, another stray, David J. Dunham (b. ca. 1829), living with Robert and Magdaline McLeod. Yet another stray is Elizabeth Dunham (12) a 'servant' to David and Sarah Johnston.

In other words, Samuel and Phoebe's family seem a bit scattered in 1851. David J. Dunham seems to be the same person in another fragment:

There was a David Dunham b. ca. 1830, teaching schooling Havelock Parish, Kings Co., NB in 1871. His wife is Mary J. (38) and children were Sarah A. (13), Silas T. (10), George (8) and William (MAR1871). His wife was Mary Jane Burges whom he married in Studholm Parish 16FEB1857. The name, Burges/Burgess, is in Studholm Parish in 1851 but the only readily available Mary was b. ca. 1843. Next door to that particular family of Elias (46) and Sarah (36) 'Burges' was that of Daniel C. Dunham (48), a widower, with Sarah (18), Richard (10) and 'Susane' (5). Daniel, although b. NB, was Irish and his family appears to be separate from the other Dunham's.
By 1881, David (51, English) was a shoemaker in Salisbury Parish, Westmorland Co., NB. Amongst his children, was Arthur (19) who appears to have been the Silas T. in 1871 and whose death registration gives him as Arthur Silas Dunham b. Havelock Parish 11MAY1861, d. Moncton 7OCT1921, the s/o David J. and Mary J. (Burgess) Dunham. Havelock Parish was set apart from Studholm Parish in 1858. In 1881, David's wife, Mary J. (37) was also English, which seems unlikely. Other children were George (18), Dory? (10) and Aggie (2). 'Dory' is given as female yet appears to be the William in 1871.
By 1891 David Dunham (60) is still a shoemaker but in Havelock Parish, Kings Co., NB. Mary J. is age 48 and children are Aggie (12) and Charles (Charlie?) (8). Arthur (290 is married, lives separately nearby and between him and his father is a family that includes Sarah Burgess (75), apparently the wife of Elias in 1851. The family in between is that of Marshal (30) and Dora (20) Sherman, where Dora is likely Dory in 1881, therefore Sarah Burgess is very likely Mary J.'s mother.
This raises the question as to where was Mary J. Burgess in 1851? More to the point, where was David Dunham? Possibly in a part of Saint John Co. where the 1851 census was lost. It also raises the question as to whether Daniel C. Dunham (b. ca. 1803) was a part of the general family or (being Irish) was a separate household. There was a Daniel Dunham active in Orange Lodge demonstrations in the 1850's, but David seems to feel 'English' by at least 1891. Also, in 1891, judging by the other surnames (Keith and Thorne for example) David appears to be living in or near Butternut Ridge. Also other members of the general, Dunham family appear to be living relatively close.

Daniel C. Dunham b. NB ca. 1803 may have been the Daniel C. Dunham b. NB ca. 1806 in the 1860 census of Oxford, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. He is also listed (b. NB ca. 1807) in Oxford in 1855 with a wife, Bathsheba (b. MA ca. 1809) and a son, George W. (8). He died in (it seems) Holden Town, Holden Co., MA 30JAN1880 age 73 years, is given as b. "St. John, N.B.", s/o Nelson Dunham who was b. the same place. I really question that his father was named Nelson as the forename would have been popularized (by the famous Admiral's victory in 1798) after that father's birth.
Daniel C. Dunham petitioned for land in Kings Co., alone in 1824. He is likely the same in 1846 with William J. Wright. There were other Daniel's petitioning in Kings Co.: in 1786, 1823, 1824 (again with William Wright as former members of the 104th Regiment) and 1840. All of these, except the 1786 petition, are likely the same person in 1851. Daniel C. Dunham was granted 200 acres in Sussex Parish in 1831 and 54 acres in Studholm Parish in 1855.

In spite of the 'Irishness" of Daniel C. Dunham I suspect that his was not a separate family. At a vague guess he was likely a grandson of Daniel and Catherine (Campbell) Dunham.
Another matter is that Manoah was also the forename of Manoah Steves of the Steeves' family who, eventually, started Steveston in British Columbia. The area of Westmorland, Queens and Kings Counties in which the Steeves' are also found.

In general I feel the Dunham family needs a thorough examination before you can make any real conclusions.

Thomas

Gloria, I have attached his death certificate. I hope you are still online. It doesn't list his father and his mother is listed as "Mary DUNHAM" so there are several possibilities. Sometimes the informant, in this case his son, didn't know the father's name because he died before the son was born. Sometimes the informant doesn't know his grandmother's maiden name so they just put down DUNHAM. Hard to say.
Suzanne Carter

I refer to your Oct. 9, 2003 email in which you sought information on Manoah Dunham. Besides the 1891 and 1901 censuses, he is named Mansah in the 1881 census. My 94 year old father, Harold Jackson, is a grandson of Manoah, and knew him by his nickname, Nor, if I remember correctly. Though his death certificate shows his date of birth as Nov. 24, 1851, this is incorrect, and my father knows why his true date of birth, Nov. 24, 1850, was not provided. As my father has a wealth of information on Manoah, including his putative parents, you can contact me, if you would like to contact him by telephone.
Ronald Jackson,
Halifax, N.S.

Hello, all. I am looking for information about the parents of Eliza Jane Debow and her husband, Henry McDonald, both of whom I believe were born around 1823 somewhere in the Hampton - French Village area. Their children included Elmira, Elizabeth, William, Richard, Thomas, and Alonzo McDonald. Would be grateful for any leads or information you might have. Thanks very much.

To answer an ealier question, yes, Thomas Connor Hastings was son of Rhoda Clark Hastings.

The reason I assigned Mary Connor to Thomas and Mercy is based on this snippet that references her as Thos. Conner's eldest dau.:

http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/NewspaperVitalStats/Details.as...

That could pertain to another Thos. Conner and another Mary, but for now I have it attached. I haven't seen any other record.

Mary Connor Clarke's tombstone has her b. 1808 d. 1854.

Also listed on the same Clarke stone are:

William Leonard 1804-1892
Amanda Slipp 1828-1884
Sarah Elizabeth 1833-1884
John Connor 1835-1855

You are way ahead of me as I have not added all those other siblings yet that you mention! Thank you for the fun details.

It's the dates that make me think that Mary was Thomas Connor's sister. At:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
She was b. 1808. Also, note that William Leonard Clark lived on Kemble's Manor. This was originally mostly Greenwich Parish and the west side of Westfield Parish in Kings Co., That means they lived near the Kings Co. and Queens Co. boundary. The closest Anglican Church would have been at Oak Point. He is transcribed as "William J. Clark", age 57, with his 2nd wife, Amanda (33) in the 1861 census of Hampstead Parish. He has a daughter, Elizabeth (24) so Amanda is clearly his 2nd wife and he lives next to the the Slipp's and Lowrey's. Thomas 'Conner' (66) in the 1851 census was b. ca. 1785 and Mercy was b. 1784. So, William Leonard Clark's wife could have been their daughter. She was given as b. ca. 1809.

For example, Joseph 'Pal?m?' (21) with Thomas and Mercy in 1851 was likely a son of Joseph (51) and Sarah (38) Palmer living next to 'Zebulin Conner' (26) on the next page. Sarah may be Joseph's 2nd wife as Ann Connor of Greenwich Parish, Kings Co., NB m. 24FEB1829 Joseph Palmer, of Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., NB. Even though 1829 is the date of their marriage in the Greenwich-Westfield Parishes Anglican records, a marriage bond was issued 1832, and co-signed by Daniel Jones of Saint John Co., and Samuel Jones of Kings Co. Assuming that Ann was the d/o Thomas and Mercy, it was probably he who cosigned the marriage bond of Samuel Jones and Elizabeth Adams in 1832. Another co-signer of this bond was Walter Reid. All were of Kings Co.

In any case it would seem that the younger Joseph Palmer was a grandson, so Rhoda may have been as well. in fact, it seems the custom of the time to send younger members of the family to assist elder members.

Zebulon Connor, whom I assume was a son, was b. ca. 1825. John 'Conner' (ca. 1818) also seems to have been a son. The Rev. Thomas Connors (ca. 1816-1900) mentioned at:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbcarlet/newspage54.htm
This is the tricky part. It seems that Thomas and Mercy's children were born after 1810. This makes Mary's birth borderline. So the question is whether she was Thomas and Mercy's (eldest) daughter,or, perhaps, Thomas' younger sister?

Peter Connor's will (made 12DEC1809, probated 1JAN1811) has been abstracted by Hale as:

Parish of Greenwich, Kings County. (Appears as "Peter CONNER" in probate records.) Will dated 12 December 1809, proved 1 January 1811. Wife Mary all my household movables, she to be maintained by my son Thomas while a widow. Son Thomas all land and stock, except one cow and six sheep, with all farming utensils. Daughter Catharine two pounds. Daughter Nancy a cow and six sheep. Son Thomas CONNOR sole executor. Witnesses: John JONES, Zabulon(sic) JONES, Thomas CONNER. Inventory, dated 26 February 1811, valued at £297 by John JONES and Moses BRUNDAGE.

This does not mention a daughter, Mary, and his date-of-death (more or less) precludes Mary as having been his daughter, so I guess your inference that she was a daughter of Thomas and Mercy is most likely.

Thomas
If that is so, then I mistakenly assigned Thomas Connor and Mercy Jones as parents of Mary Connor and grandparents of Rhoda Clark. I haven't really fleshed that line out yet beyond Rhoda.

Btw, I am 15 mins. from Amesbury, MA. Give a holler if there's anything you would like me to check, cemeteries, library, etc.

Which likely makes Rhoda to be Thomas Connor's niece, which makes a lot of sense.

Thomas.

Wonderful stuff, there. I believe Rhoda is child of William Leonard Clark and Mary Connor. They are also buried on the little hillside in Hampstead with Edward and Rhoda. I sent you a link this a.m. in case you want to copy any of the photos there for your records. If it didn't arrive, I'd be glad to send another. They married May 6 1858, Queens County. Not sure where I found that day and would have to doublecheck myself as only the year is listed on the record. I may have looked it up at PNB when we were up there and just not recorded it. I'll have to check.

http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/RS551A/Details.aspx?culture=en...
