The Evening Times Saint John, NB April 11, 1906

Andrew Turner died yesterday at his home, 170 Adelaide St, aged 75 years. Mr Turner was born in Kings county, but was brought to the city (Saint John) by his parents when but two years old, and lived in the North End ever since. He was a shipwright by trade, and one of the links with the past when wooden shipbuilding was at its height here. Mr. Turner took contracts from planting vessels and he did a lot of work for the late David Lynch.
He is survived by his wife and seven children. These are: three sons; Fred, Bradford A, and William H, merchant - tailor all of Saint John and four daughters; Misses Anne, Kate, Saddie and Maggie at home.
Funeral held at 170 Adelaide St at 2:30 pm Thursday.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking for anything on this family. I believe that Andrew's parents are Thomas and Ann Turner. Andrew also had a brother Thomas Turner born about 1828. Andrew was born about 1831.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Jennifer Turner

I cannot confirm Andrew's parents, but the following may be of use.

Thomas

1901 census of Lansdowne Ward, Saint John, Saint John County, New Brunswick

Andrew Turner 16MAY1834
Catherine Turner (daughter) 15JUL1850
Bradford A. Turner 17SEP1870
William H. Turner 18OCT1872
Anne G. Turner 24APR1873
Kate E. Turner 21FEB1876
Sadie Turner 26MAR1878
Frederick Turner 12JUL1880
Margaret Turner 28AUG1883

Although, in this census, Catherine is indicated as a daughter, her age, and the fact that Andrew is indicated as married, rather than widowed, plus the ages of the children, suggests she may have been a second wife. Dates-of-birth in the 1901 census are unreliable, although Andrew is given as age 66, that age may have been a guess by the informant.

In 1881, in Ward 2, Portland Twp., Saint John Co., NB are:

Andrew Turner age 46, b. NB, English, ship carpenter, Wesleyan Methodist
Katherine Turner (here indicated as his wife) 36, Irish, b. Ireland
Bradford Allen Turner 10
William Henry Turner 8
Annie Gertrude Turner 7
Catherine Elizabeth Turner 6
Sarah Turner 3
Fredk Turner b. JUL1880

ANDREW TURNER b. NB 16MAY1834 (ca. 1831?), d. Saint John Co. 10APR1906 age 75 years, m. 1863 CATHERINE (KATHERINE) E. WHITE (b. Ireland 15JUL1850 (ca. 1842-5?). d. Saint John Co. 11MAR1907 age 65 years.) When Andrew and Catherine were married, a Christopher White co-signed their marriage bond. In 1864, Andrew co-signed Christopher’s marriage bond when the latter m. Ann Blair. The implication is that Christopher White was Catherine’s brother.

children:
1. BRADFORD ALLEN TURNER b. 17SEP1870, m. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 4DEC1906 MARY MITCHELL
2. WILLIAM HENRY TURNER b. 18OCT1872, m. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 3SEP1902 ELLA WELLS DEAN. William was a merchant-tailor when his son, Merrill Allan Turner, was born. Could be the William H. Turner d. Saint John 12FEB1953, or the William Henry Turner d. Saint John Co. 24APR1952.
3. ANNE (‘ANNIE’) GERTRUDE TURNER b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 24APR1873 (or 24APR1874 in birth record.) Probably the Annie Gertrude Turner d. Saint John Co. 1NOV1935 as the Annie Gertrude Turner who d. 8MAR1951 is more likely Bradford’s daughter.
4. CATHERINE (KATHERINE/’KATE’) ELIZABETH TURNER b. 21FEB1876
5. SARAH (‘SADIE’) TURNER b. 26MAR1878. Possibly the Sarah Kathleen Turner who d. Saint John Co. 12JUN1942.
6. FREDERICK (’FRED’) TURNER b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 12JUL1880. A Frederick F. Turner m. Saint John Co. 17SEP1912 ELIZABETH JANE THORNE/PERRY (This was her second marriage; not sure which was her maiden name.) A Frederick Freeman Turner m. Saint John Co. 10AUG1936 LOUISA O’LEARY. A Frederick F. Turner d. Saint John Co. 12MAR1939.
Frederick enlisted in WWI in Vancouver, BC 13NOV1914. He gave his date-of-birth as 11JUL1880, and place-of-birth as Saint John, NB. His next-of-kin he gave as his sister, Annie Gertrude Turner. He was an iron-worker and single at the time. He had previously served in the ‘S. A. C.’ (South African Constabulary?; members of the RNWMP did serve in that unit) and Royal North West Mounted Police. He was 5 feet 9 inches with dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He was Wesleyan. (The RNWMP preferred short men, as taller, heavier, men 'killed' the horses.)
7. MARGARET HARRIS TURNER b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 28AUG1883, m. Saint John Co. 23SEP1908 LOUIS LANSDOWN PATCHELL (b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 6JAN1884; possibly the Louis Lansdowne Patchell who m. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 21SEP1946 Mary Alma Crombie), s/o Robert and Jane (Boyd) Patchell

Thomas Turner d. Kings Co., NB 14FEB1900 age 72 years.
Thomas Turner petitioned for land in Kings Co. in 1824.
In 1865, Thomas Turner was a ship carpenter living near Main and Portland Streets, Portland Twp., Saint John Co., NB.
In 1871, Thomas Turner was a caulker, on Sheriff St., Portland Twp.

Thank you so much Thomas

I have been looking for information on Frederick Turner for some time now. Are you related to the Turner's. You have so much info on the family. William Henry Turner and Ella Wells Dean are my great grandparents. Their son Merrill is my grandfather.
Sadie Turner worked for 25 years at the Perkins school for the blind. Katherine Turner married Frank Harrison Banks, they lived in Mass. I don't have any info on either of them. I know that Katherine had a daughter. But I don't know anything else on her family. Sadie did not marry. Bradford and Mary had three children. One boy and two girls.
So I'm wondering if you are related because I don't know anyone else researching my Turner family.
Thanks again for the info
Jennifer

I am not related to the Turner's, as far as I know; I just did a relatively quick search of a few sites I am familiar with and put the information together. I would recommend, if you can get ahold of it, the 1851 census of Saint John County, as there were no Turner's in Kings Co. in 1851, therefore likely in Portland. This should show Andrew's parents.
A few things on Merrill, if you don't have them, his birth record:

Child: TURNER, MERRILL ALLAN
Sex: M
Date of Birth: 1903-06-06 (YYYY-MM-DD)
Place: SAINT JOHN
County: ST JOHN
Father: TURNER, WILLIAM H.
Mother: DEAN, ELLA WELLS
Number: 6378
Reference: A5/1903
Microfilm: F19002

and marriage record:

Name: TURNER, MERRILL A.
Married: MOFFATT, DORIS GERTRUDE
Date: 1942-11-11 (YYYY-MM-DD)
County: ST JOHN
Parish: SAINT JOHN
Number: 31521
Reference: B4/1942
Microfilm: F20029

There is an image of the birth record. If you go to:
http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/SearchPortal.aspx?L=EN&S...
the Provincial Archives web site, and select the Vital Statsitics database, and fill in 'Turner' and 'Merrill', it will (eventually) take you to the image. It, for example, gives the attending physician, Dr. P. Inches, and William's address, 48 Adelaide Street, and his occupation, Merchant Tailor.
It looks as if Fred, shortly after, or even before (he may have just returned) the 1901 census joined the North West Mounted Police, and was one of the 250 who went to the Boer War. Several, it seems, stayed behind to join the newly created South African Constabulary. Must have been quite an adventure.

Hello
Your help is greatly appreciated. I live in New Brunswick and look at the Provincial Archives almost everyday. After I saw your message I did find Frederick Turner in the National Archives of Canada website. As far as the South African constabulary, where would I look to find info on that. I've been doing searches in google and yahoo but can't find anything that has any info. I knew Frederick was in the Yukon from the obituaries of his brothers and sisters it said Dawson city in the Yukon.
Thank you again for all your help.

I tried verifying a connection to the SAC, but found nothing revealing. The only reason I felt that 'S. A. C.' on his attestment papers might be the South African Constabulary was because I am in Scouts, knew Baden-Powell was involved, and remembered his comments on Canadians. See, for example, at:
http://www.civilization.ca/cwm/saw/units/sac_e.html
Also, the old Boy Scout uniform was based on the SAC's, and that was based on the RCMP's after whom the SAC was modeled. I also knew that some of the Mounted Rifles in the Boer War were recruited from the RCMP. In short, its speculative, but very possible. I could find no muster lists, or anything of that type. I am afraid any records would probably be in the War Office or Colonial Office records in England. Possibly in the Public Records Office.

According to Doris Gertrude Trifts birth record and marriage record, she was born 42 Druham? St., Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 8JUN1909 and married Peerlick Camp, Bayswater, Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB 1AUG1928 Harry Clarence Moffatt (b. North Sydney, Cape Breton, NS ca. 1902), s/o of Harry Richardson and Clara Isobel (Forward) Moffatt. She was the daughter of Harry P. and Queena (Queenie) Elizabeth (Hersey) Trifts.

When they married, Harry Clarence Moffatt was a chauffeur living in Newfoundland, New Jersey, USA (made famous by the movie, "The Station Agent"). Chauffeur, at that time, may mean someone who maintained a steam engine. Doris was living at 51 Kennedy St. in Saint John.

Frederick Henry Trifts (b. St. Martins Parish, Saint John Co., NB 1OCT1874, d. Saint John 6AUG1922) married Saint John 14AUG1901 Mary Ellen O'Brien. He was the son of Jacob (Joseph) F. and Mary Ann (Andrews/Anderson) Trifts. Joseph F. Trifts was from Germany. Fred was apparently murdered, his skull being fractured. He was an electrician. In 1901, in Saint John, Frederick Trifts (8JAN1873) was the son of Jacob F. (4NOV1850) and Mary Ann (21AUG1857) Trifts. I believe this is the same Fred as there was only one in 1901 and the birth-dates in that census are very often incorrect. Fred had, amongst other siblings, H. Paul Trifts b. 6FEB1885. This I assume was Harry Paul Trifts, and Doris' father. Fred would be her uncle. From your account I sense some tragedy deprived Doris of her parents and she may have been 'adopted' by her uncle. Even so, as far as I can tell, Harry Paul Trifts died in 1964.
This is somewhat borne out by the 1891 census. Here the enumerator interpreted the surname as 'Frits' and Jacob F. is Fred (42) from which I wouls assume his full name was Jacob Frederick Trifts. He was born in Germany as were his parents. Mary Ann (36) was b. PEI, her father was b. England and her mother was b. Newfoundland (the province, I would think; not the town in New Jersey). If I assume the 1901 birth-date for Mary Ann is incorrect, this may mean she was Mary Anne Andrews b. PEI 23AUG1854, baptized Charlottetown 30AUG1854, d/o Henry and Maria Andrews. This seems very likely as by 1871, Henry Andrews (b. England ca. 1825) and Maria (b. Newfoundland ca. 1822) were in Saint John with their daughter, Mary Ann (b. ca. 1855. Mary Ann is given as b. NB, but this seems unlikely. Mary A. Trifts lived in New York when she died 10MAR1932 age 79 years, but her son-in-law, Roy Watson, arranged for her funeral in Saint John.
Maria Andrews b. ca. 1802, d. 25MAY1890 leaving two daughters, one of whom was the wife of F. Trifts.

Doris had a brother, Frederick L. Trifts (12JUN1903-25OCT1926) also an electrician who drowned in Bayswater, NB. Another brother was Charles Franklin Trifts b. Saint John 22JAN1905.

Queen Elizabeth (Hersey) Trifts (12OCT1881-14JUL1933) was the daughter of Charles F. Hersey (b. in Gagetown, Queens Co., NB) and of Mary A.? Cook (from Saint John).

In the 1911 census of Saint John, Harry Trifts (FEB1883) and Eliza (OCT1882), had children 'Fredrick' L. (JUN1903) and 'Doras' G. (JUN1909).

Jacob Frederick Trifts (4NOV1849-5AUG1928) was the son of Fred Trifts and Julia Grouse. Sometimes Jacob F. is said to have been born in England. this suggests he may have come to NB as a child with his parents (both b. Germany) by way of England. An Anglican, Jacob Frederick Trifts was also Sexton for his church, St. Paul's in Saint John. He worked in ship-building in St. Martins Parish and in Saint John..

Frederick Trifts (ca. 1816-22FEB1876) died Long Wharf, Portland, Portland Parish, Saint John Co., NB. He left a wife and five children and appears to have had family in Philadelphia. His wife, Julia (ca. 1818-5APR1884) also die at Long Wharf. A son-in-law was George Payne. She was survived by four children.

Doris may have later married _____ Turner.

Thomas

Oh, yes.

Harry Richardson Moffatt (b. North Sydney, Cape breton, NS ca. 1876) and Clara Isabel Forward (b. Carbonear, Newfoundland ca. 1876) married in North Sydney 26SEP1899. He was the son of Elijah and Margaret Moffatt. She was the daughter of G. G. Oscar and Isabell Forward.

You are correct he was a Chauffeur, that is what my fathers birth certificate says, it says she was 25, and living in Newfoundland N.J., and my Grandfather was 31. My father was born in Paterson N.J. on Aug. 26th 1934. she is a Housewife and he is a Chauffeur, based on file #1784 recorded on Sept. 5th 1934 at St Joseph's Hospital in Paterson N.J.

Thanks for the info.

P.S. My father did say that his father was killed by the Mob, and didn't want to talk about it, nor would he ever say much.???? My mother who is still alive said that when they 1st met, they would go to some dance hall in Saint John N.B., and that they had power there when nobody else had lights ???, Her maiden name is Merrick, her father was Wilford Merrick

Wilfred Laurie Merrick

Hi, Don.

The Wilford Merrick you mention may be Wilfred Laurie Merrick b. 190 Brussels St., Saint John 6JUN1904 son of William and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Merrick. Wilfred and Wilford seem interchangeable. As Wilfred Laurier Merrick he married Hilda Doucette and had a son by the same name who m. 1st 1954 Jean Frances Logan, d/o James Elvin? and Dorothy (Harris) Logan; and 2nd 1961 Sandra Irene Trecartin, d/o Roy Chipman and Ruth Mary (Daley) Trecartin. The Trecartin's were a Loyalist family.

William Merrick (b. ca. 1870) was the s/o Patrick and Mary (Howard) Merrick and Elizabeth Cunningham (b. ca. 1871) was the d/o Moses and Mary (Garnet, Garnett?) Cunningham. For some strange reason, William and Elizabeth were married in a Roman Catholic ceremony at 6:30 am, Tuesday, 15NOV1892. The banns had been published so it was a planned wedding. Perhaps they needed to catch a ship or train for their honeymoon.
