I am looking at very old notes that my great-uncle (an amateur genealogist) recorded on someone named Wm Brown who was a tanner and ran a tannery in Richibucto. His notes say the following:

"Wm Brown, whose wife was from Prince Edward Island, was supposed to have been a brother to the Brown who ran the shipbuilding yard. Wm Brown was a tanner and ran a tannery in Richibucto. He also made shoes."

"Book N Page 65, No 3188: Wm McLeoad and Elizabeth his wife to William Brown on April 8, 1852, recorded in Kent County."

I have no idea what "Book N" means. The Brown that ran the shipbuilding yard I believe is my 3rd great-grandfather, Thomas Mitchell Brown.

If this helps you in any way, good.

Do you have information on the parents of your Wm Brown? If so, would you share it with me?

Thank you.

Hello,

I've been researching the tanners located on Court Street, Richibucto (New Brunswick, Canada). From others, McMinn and Brown were tanners on that street. On the same street, there was a shoemaker. With a colleague, we have a project to designate 15 historical places in the Town of Richibucto. One of the places is on Court Street, shoemaker store/house, that was located next to the tannery (east side of the tannery). By researching the house, we had to research the tanners and the neighbouring lots. The known tanners on Court Street were William Brown, David McMinn, William Sutherland, William Fall.

About the Book N Page 65, No 3188, if refers to New Brunswick land deeds. Sometimes, registrars of land deeds will add some interesting notes on the grantees and grantors. Our findings on the 15 historical places will be published by the end of March 2010 via the New Brunswick historical places web site.

The importance is on the people who lived in the shoemaker house (Emma and Frank Renzetta), with a few mentions/details of the shoemaker and the tannery. Space is very limited and the tannery is not the importance for the said historical place. The tannery house and buildings per say were demolish in the 1930's.

Do you have any additional genealogical information, photos, etc., on William Brown, tanner and currier of Richibucto?

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Robert Richard.

In the old Business directories for Kent County, New Brunswick (Canada), you will find datas' on William Brown and others tanners in Richibucto. From others, McAlpine and Dunn & Bradstreet were publishers of these business directories. Look for them in libraries, archives, museums, etc.
