There might be further evidence out there regarding the earlier McNeil generation. This is conjecture:

In a land petition transcribed at http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/rossdickson/macintosh/LandGrants... you can see a Norman McNeil b.1770 who indicates he spent 1816-1817 in "Canada" before settling near Buctouche. I have other evidence that "Canada" means Quebec and/or Montreal in this particular case. The Ester McNeil in the 1881 census born in Quebec about 1817 seems an interesting and suggestive coincidence. She was probably Euphemia Graham's mother and hence probably not a McNeil by birth, though. Might she have been a Morrison or a McIntosh?

The name "Euphemia" is prominent among the settlers connected with that petition. Euphemia MacIntosh was the mother of the petitioners Donald and David, and the name recurs frequently among the MacIntoshes for several generations thereafter.

I also have evidence of considerable travel between the Scottish settlements in Kent County and those around the Bay of Chaleur, specifically Campbellton --- New Carlisle is not too far away, is it?

Surnames: Barnes, Beattie, Finlay, Graham, Hall, Harnett, Little, McNeil, Pepin, Sawyer
Thanks to both of you for clues. Malcolm McNeil was s/o Norman McNeil & Ann Finlay. Malcolm died after 1861. He married Esther d/o James Sawyer & Esther Hall in 1835. Esther Sawyer died at Champlin, Minnesota in 1895. A daughter Sarah McNeil, b. 05 Feb 1840 Richibucto, NB - was age 70 in 1911 - d. 1914 Westcock, Westmorland, NB, Canada tombstone 1840-1914. Burial at Westcock, Sackville, NB. Married William Evans Barnes 19 Jun 1860 at Richiboucto, Kent, NB. The youngest daughter, Fanny McNeil, married Charles Little Sept 3, 1878 in Westmorland County, NB, before settling in Minnesota. The youngest son, Finlay McNeil, married Priscilla Pepin in Minnesota. The Beattie boys found in the 1871 census returns at Richiboucto were step-brothers of William Graham who married Euphemia McNeil as his mother Ann Harnett Graham married Peter Beattie 7 Oct 1856. -Aldo
