Hi Tony,
I once asked Jimmy Keith ca 1979 if he knew where his Loyalist ancestors came from and he didn't know. We ahd a camp on the island and would visit with him and his wife Joy. Jimmy wrote a history of his family and it is online at http://www.parl.ns.ca/kisland/keithfamily.html Some of his sister Audrey's family still have camps over there i believe. By the way, the name changed from KEEFE to KEITH around 1860 Jimmy told me. Unfortunately I forget why.

The formost authority on the Loyalists was Sabine who had this note about James KEITH/KEEFE....Keith, James.

Of Newport, Rhode Island. In 1778 an Addresser of Lord Howe and of Sir Peter Parker.

[The 1774 Rhode Island Census lists James Keith, at Newport, with a household of two males over age sixteen, one male under that age, and three blacks. A James Keith was employed as a sawyer, by the Engineer's Department, in 1781, at Horns Hook, New York. Wright's 'Loyalists of New Brunswick,' includes a James Keef, or Keith, served with the Engineer's Department, and a grantee at Parrtown. Bell's 'Early Loyalist Saint John,' lists James Keef with a family, on arrival at Saint John, of a wife, one child above age ten and one child under that age.]

So that gives you a starting point in the states. If you find James' wife's name, I hope you will post it here. :)
Suzanne Carter

Hi, Suzanne;
I have done a lot of research on the KEEFE family of Kenn. Island (my gg-grandmother was Elizabeth KEEFE d/o John KEEFE and Letitia KERR. I get back to Thomas KEEFE and Jane HAYTER, and know that Thomas' father was James KEEFE, the Loyalist - but there I am stuck. Do you have any info on James KEEFE (dates, wife's name, where he came from in the colonies)?
Thanks
Tony LeBlanc
Roberta:

Mark Hutchings tells me you are his cousin. And Mark and I are cousins. My aunt Olive Hutchings spent her younger years on the Hutchings farm of John and Rebecca Hutchings along with my mother June and their brother Francis and Douglas. When they visited the graves a number of years ago they noted the Strayhorns were the original owners of the farm. The Irvines were the descendants of Catherine Carter nee Charlton who was Sarah Charlton's sister. Mary Reed was no relation according to Olive. She also noted that one of the Irvine boys had drowned. Ask Mark for my contact information. Cheers. Your cousin Rick

Thank you for the reply. My grandfather was born on K. Island and my Hutchings and Charlton ancestors are buried in the private cemetary there so thought you might be related. Some of the people buried in the lot I haven't been able to connect to our family for some reason. Irvine, Carter, Strayhorn, Saunders and Reed. I'll be visiting St. John from the USA with my cousin in a week and we plan to go out to the island to walk the old homestead property and visit the cemetery.
Roberta

That would be brilliant! Thanks!

I'm looking for John, Michael & Patrick Moriarty from Cork in the 1850's. I know for sure that John had two daughters born there Mary and Hannah. I'm looking for anything related to the Moriartys in that area. I suspect there may have been a sister, Ellen and there seems to have been a relationship with the Duggan family.
Colleen

I don't know what the "Mission" part is unless it is a baptism in a mission church which is a small branch of a bigger church sharing the same clergy.
If you give me their names I'll see what I can find for you.
Suzanne
Hi there,
I have family that I have found in the New Brunswick area. They are Moriartys and I have found to births in the the Golding Grove Mission. I'm wondering if you know anything about Golding Grove? They would have come from Ireland, probably Cork, in the 1850's and were in Maine by the mid 1860's. I have not been able to locate them or anyone in the Golding Grove Mission in either the 1851 or 61 census. Any insight you might have will be appreciated.
Colleen Moriarty Furnell colleenfurnell@gmail.com

Suzanne, try Dan John's site at the PANB site. Go to 'Full-Text Search". Search for "Milkish" with the quotation marks. You get things like:

d. 21st inst., Wm CHARLTON, age 86, resident of Milkish (Kings Co.) for last 60 years, formerly a native of Tyrone, Ireland, left four daughters, one son, thirty grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Funeral Thursday 2 o'clock from his son-in-law's, John HUTCHINGS, residence Milkish Island.

James TAYLOR, laborer of Pokiok, Portland (St. John) left Millidgeville Sunday morn, with the intention of crossing the Kennebecasis on the ice to Milkish Island. No one on Milkish Island has seen him and he has been missing from home ever since.

There are 27 pages of stuff.

Thomas

There are two cemeteries on the island. One is the Keith family's and the other, located close to the ferry landing on the shore facing Millidgeville, is the other one. The surnames on stones are STRAYHORN, HUTCHINGS, CHARLTON, SAUNDERS, REED, CARTER, IRVINE and others with no stones including the JOHNSTONs and possibly the MORROWs, CLARKs and GODDARDs who are listed on the 1862 map as residents. I have never heard of the McCORMICKs having their own cemetery and being Catholics it is likely they were buried in a Catholic cemetery off the island.

Kennebecasis Island is located in Westfield Parish, Kings Co.,NB just across the county line from Saint John. It is connected to the Kingston Peninsula by a cable ferry from Summerville and in many records the area is referred to as "The Milkish" for the channel that flows between the island and Summerville (and Bayswater).

It has no year round residents now but many old families lived there including the Loyalist KEEFE/KEITH family and the Ralph McCORMICK descendants who still summer there in the original homestead. The 2 graveyards have been documented by Gordon Gamble and I have the non-KEITH one on http://www.canadianheadstones.com/ (no pixs unfortunately).

I have been approached for help on the island families over the years so decided to ask to have this site created. So I hope people will use it to connect.
Cheers
Suzanne Carter
