He's my ggg grandfather and I very much want to visit his grave and leave him flowers and prayers. Please if your name is Carey, and you know anything about where he died, let me know.

Hi,
I am a decendant of Gilbert Duke, b 1788.
In my records, Gilbert and Mary Topham had 6 children, one being Margaret, wife of your ggg grandfather.
Richard Duke is my gg grandfather, which is your ggg grandfathers brother in-law.

In my records, they spell his last name as Keary, not carey. Perhaps that may help in your search further.

jabarry - Thanks for your offer of help. I doubt he is buried in Pokemouche, since he died in the Civil War. I have checked burial records for Pokemouche, and can't find him there.

Hi,
John Keary has many spellings. I just found his christening this morning under the name of John Kary born May 11, 1822 and baptized on August 4 of that year in Bartiborgh. He is my ggrandfather married Margaret Duke in Pokemouche 1839. His name on their marriage certificate is recorded as Carey. His father was Edward Keary from Ireland and mother Catherine Power. Edward owned the Keary Hotel on Water Street in Chatham NB. He married twice and has a dozen children or so. His second wife was Elizabeth Baldwin Griffin, one of their children , Thomas married Rosemary Fitzpatrick and owned the Keary House in Bathurst.

Apparently John died in the US civil war but I have no proof. He had left his wife with my grandfather John and Bridget. My father used to say his wife Margaret was a contrary person. I am now a great grandmother and I remember the place where they lived. He is not buried in Pokemouche. I live in Montreal Quebec but was born in Pokemouche.

If you have information on John Keary's relatives in Ireland or Gilbert Duke, Martgaret Duke's father who came from Devon England, I would love to get whatever you can let me have.

Hope this is helpful. Check out my Keary tree on Ancestry.

Good luck with your searching.

Patricia

I just found his christening record this week under the name of Kary. He was born May 11, 1822 and christened Aug 4 of that year son of Edward Keary and Catherine Power. I finally made the connection to my gggrand father Edward, He owned the Keary Hotel on Water Street in Chatham. When my grandfather died I imagine my father said that my ggrandfather John was born in Ireland but I now have proof that he was born in NB, However, his father Edward was born in Ireland. He came over in 1816 and married Catherine Power; had 6 children and after her death married Elzabeth Baldwin Griffin. They also had 6 children plus one Griffinchild with her first husband. Thomas moved to Bathurst where he opened The Keary House,

I would like to find info on Edward from Ireland. I believe he may have had brothers that came as well.

If anyone has info on Edward I would appreciate it.

Thanks Patricia Keary

Thanks for all the Carey info. I didn't have John's birthdate. Margaret Duke's father was Gilbert Duke. I've found ( in a book ) the he was an English Man-O-War's Man so a Loyalist. I haven't been able to find any further info on Gilbert.

Also, Gilbert Duke Married Mary ( Polly) Topham b. 1793 d. 1870 daughter of John Topham- he was also a loyalist. Polly's Island in Pokemouche is named after her.

Hi,

I haven't gone any further with my search on Gilbert Duke, but he died on March 9, 1827 on his way back to England to collect his future left to him by hia father. Apparently he was a British Navel Officer. I don't believe he ever lived in the States. After his wife died and the lumber Co. he was involved in Gloucester County Nb he went to the Gaspe Coast to work with a Chas Robin lunber Co.

Have you visited my Keary Family tree. Check it out.
