Re: Timothy Daley m. Jane Thompson
Hi, I am also looking into this family. Timothy Daley seems to have been born in NB; according to the census returns of 1871, 1881, and 1891, he is reported as born in New Brunswick in all instances. Jane Thompson states on the marriage at Bathurst 14 April 1855 that she was from Eel River, NB. Jane was reported as age 29 in 1861, 39 in 1871. Jane may be the d/o John Thompson, born New Carlisle, Quebec, about 1795, married 1825 Margaret Sawyer (c1801-c1842)? Margaret Sawyer was d/o of James Sawyer and Esther Hall, (ancestors of mine). The children of John Thompson and Margaret Sawyer have not been well documented as of yet, I am quite intrigued to find Jane. John Thompson, Widower of Margaret Sawyer, m2, Marie Chalifour, rg Carleton, QC, 25 Nov. 1845.
Captain Daley, Widower of Jane Thompson, married secondly Mary Elizabeth Sawyer. Mary Elizabeth Sawyer, age 36, abjured Protestantism 28 Feb 1878 moments before the marriage on the same day, rg Ste-Famille Bathurst. The marriage states that the groom and bride obtained a dispensation of "second degree of affinity". A dispensation for affinity "second degree" probably means that Mary Elizabeth Sawyer was a relative to Daley's first wife, (is canonical affinity to the 2nd degree possibly a niece, or is it a cousin?, first degree would be a sister?), the relation is not bride and groom, but between Mary and Jane Thompson. Mary is reportedly "age 33" in 1881 (younger than reported on her marriage day), "born Quebec", of "American" ancestry (matching the New England roots of Hall?). Mary is reportedly age 38 in 1891 (aging very slowly!), her father and mother were "born Quebec", Mary is instructed, can read and write. Timothy is reported as age 57 in 1891, born NB, parents born Ireland, RC, farmer, can read. When one of Mary's sons married, her name was recorded as Mary Elizabeth "Sears", which reopens the question of her identity. We need to investigate further the records of Mary's children to determine evidence of her exact surname. I hope I have not confused you too much. I'm very happy to have someone to ask questions with. -Aldo

Re: Timothy Daley m. Jane Thompson
Please include me on your emails to Melissa Kohl -- I am working with her cousin, and have already put together a large portion of the Timothy Daly line. My email is helena18818@yahoo.caI have done some research after receiving your posting and have found ancestry family trees: Cotton Family Tree Owner: BrendaLevesque52 Cullen's Brook Quebec Sinclair Family Tree Owner: GORDONKEITHs as well as others that indicate Margaret Ann Sawyer, d/o Esther Hall and James Sawyer. These sosurces shows that Margaret Ann m. William Smith and their first child was born 10 Oct 1852 SOOO, it is quite possible that Margaret Ann Sawyer was first married to John Thompson. I have too much info to attempt to relay on a posting. Carol

Re: Timothy Daley m. Jane Thompson
Very insightful post. My thought is Francis Thomas Daly is the last natural born child of Jane Thompson. He is under a year old in the 1871 census, but disappears in the 1881 census. My guess is Jane died not long after 1871, the baby being sent to relatives. Who, I wonder? Frank named his only child Kathleen Agnes, so will be looking in the Daly/Thompson trees for these names. My guess is Mary Elizabeth Sawyer came over to assist a relative, got married, and had four children. Again, the names here could be insightful. George, Allen, Crosby, Edward, Lawrence. The electronic version of the second marriage says Savage, not Sawyer. Lots of Savages in the area. But the hard copy is clearly Sawyer. So strange.

Re: Timothy Daley m1. Jane Thompson
Captain Daley married first Jane Thompson of Eel River, NB. Jane, described as of "Canadian" [PQ] origin, is reported in the 1861 census at Bathurst as two years senior to Timothy, already a flourishing marine pilot.
The most likely set of parents for Jane were John Thompson of Eel River who married Margaret Sawyer at rg Carleton, Lower Canada 15 August 1825. John m2, Marie Chalifour, 1845. John is probably John Louis Thompson, born New Carlisle 1793. John is reported in the 1861 census, which allows us to confirm an approximate age for him. If we locate Margaret Sawyer's burial record, we may find a reported age at death, implying an approximate birth year.
My experience with PMTs (Public Member Trees) is that while PMTs may point in a direction, but PMTs tend to be empty shells, not to be relied upon, absolutely empty of analysis. Ann Sawyer married once, but was not the wife of John Thompson.
Margaret Sawyer at the time of her marriage in 1825 would have been close to major age, or perhaps even over the age of majority. If we place her birth about 1802, at her only marriage Margaret would be about 22 years of age, the typical age for the time for a Spinster bride would be about age 19-22 years.
I propose to add Margaret Sawyer to my roster of the Sawyer lineage of New Carlisle. The list of siblings would place Margaret among the elder children: Daniel, Ruth, Amos, AND Margaret. For the moment, I have placed Margaret approximately after Amos. Her exact position would change with the discovery of more evidence. -Aldo

Re: Timothy Daley m2, M. Sawyer
Captain Daley's second wife is listed in 1911 census. Mary Daly Widow born Sept 1846 with her Sister-In-Law, Miss Jane Daley, born October 1838, single. Taking Jane further back in census returns might provide the ancestors of Timothy Daly.
In 1901 Mary Daly, widow, age 49, reports her DOB as 15 September 1851. This date appears doubtful at best.
Three candidates appear, all born at New Carlisle:
(A) Mary Sawyer. DOB 8 Nov 1843. B. 2 March 1845 d/o David Sawyer & Margaret Thompson, Note: Godmother Elizabeth Hall.
(B) Mary Sawyer. DOB 27 April 1844. B. 11 May 1844 d/o Alexander Sawyer & Elizabeth Smith. Sponsors William Smith, mother Elizabeth. Mary m. Amos Ward, her first cousin, therefore she is not a candidate.
(C) Maria Sawyer. DOB 20 November 1846. B. 17 October 1847 d/o Daniel Sawyer & Mary Jane Assels. Sponsors Daniel Marett & Maria Assels, Uncle and Aunt.
As Mary's age varies, we are not fully confident to say which of the candidates married Captain Daly. -Aldo
