Hi Thomas,
I read in another post that you are interested in black genealogy in New Brunswick. I have a puzzler for you.
Peter and Sarah Long lived on the Miramichi, NB in 1784. They got a lot from Davidson on the River. In 1784, they are listed with 2 children. In 1793, they sold their land on the Miramichi and moved to Upper Canada, where they got land in what is now downtown Toronto. I have all the Ontario information, but what is missing is how they got to the St John's River.
Peter Long was born in Massachusset, sometimes probably before 1764 and Sarah supposedly born in New Jersey, but maybe Nova Scotia, I have contradictory information.
According to one petition, Peter Long was a gunner on the Schooner Nova Scotia on the St.John's River in 1779 or 1780. The Captain of the schooner was a Captain London.
When the Long left New Brunswick, they accompanied many white familes also from Miramichi, Loyalists from New Jersey and New York.
One name that stands out is the Kendrick brothers who were from Gagetown, so it is possible that Peter Long was in Gagetown in 1779. He seem to always work on ships.
So it looks like the Long are pre-Loyalists settlers. Any idea where I could find information about Peter Long on the St. John's River? Also possibly his marriage where I might find out Sarah's maiden name?
There was another Peter Long in Digby N.S. but it is a different persons, and he is still there in 1799 when mine is in Town of York, building houses.
Any idea?
