SAMUEL McKNIGHT/MacKNIGHT from Scotland 1816, Napan area of Northumberland Co., b. Dumfriesshire, Scotland ca. 1777, d. Napan, Northumberland Co., NB 1845 age 68 years, m. ELIZABETH (“BETSEYâ€) HALLIDAY (b. ca. 1761, d. 6MAY1862 aet. 100 years.)
While not strictly a Tabusintac family, the inter-relationships with those families is so strong as to necessitate their inclusion. Again, a Scottish family from Dumfries, again suggesting that early settlers from the area may have sent word back about the availability of land in the Miramichi area. This compilation is based on a larger work by John Garner, which he transmitted 16DEC2002, and which he called, Samuel MacKnight/Betsy Halliday Register. Accompanying this work were John’s comments:
. . . here’s the descendents of Samuel and Betsy (Halliday) MacKnight. I’ve pieced this together from many sources including Barbara Mills (Joseph DOUGLAS Macknight’s daughter), Mrs. Bertie Maclean of Black River who is a MacKnight, a multitude of pieces that I’d accumulated on the descendents of Sarah Lavender (the true Mother of the Miramichi despite what Charlotte Taylor’s descendents like to think,) and her husbands Enoch Godfrey and Capt John Maclean, the Black River Camerons; my work on the Napan Dicksons, the descendents of Joseph Simpson, the descendents of Thomas Murray/.Margaret Millar (of Black River & my gg grandparents), and descendents of John Macleod (of Pte. aux Carr/Baie du Vin); and numerous people’s work on the Murrays (the Alnwick bunch.)

Barbara Mills wrote (e-mail, 17JAN2003):
I think Francis b 1830.....d 1890 (Newcastle library) was only married twice. The George Francis MacKnight you mention was the son of Jean (d/o Francis H & Jean McKnight) Jean never married. Geordie F ,as he was called, was b 22 May 1865.He lived in New Jersey. I know his descendants. In the 1901 census his mother Jean is living with him and his family.
It would appear from the headstone (giving Eliza’s dates as 1866-1928) and from the 1901 census (giving her birth-date as 14JUN1864) that Eliza was b. 14JUN1864 and d. 13FEB1928. Also, that these dates are erroneously applied to her sister, Elizabeth. The question remains as to whether she was b. in 1866 or 1864. That is, is the headstone wrong or the 1901 census? The reference to her age as 27 in 1891 tends to support the 1864 date given in the 1901 census.
Carl Stymiest refers to, Jardines of Atlantic Canada, Jardine, Donald E., Bounty Print Ltd., Halifax, Nova Scotia, First Edition;1997, regarding Eliza‘s children by her second marriage. Barbara Mills mentions the 1891 census in which, “Eliza MacKnight is a widow age 27 with a d Pansy & a d Frances and sister Elizabeth age 21.†Richard Deise also reports that, “Barbara Mills was nice to send me some info that I think should be spread. Eliza married John Sullivan 8 October 1884 at the manse in Newcastle by Rev Wm Atkin. In 1891 Census she appeared as a widow Eliza MacKnight, widow, age 27 with a d. Pansy; a d. Frances; and a sister Elizabeth, 21.†These comments indicate that Eliza and Elizabeth Taylor were sisters. It also confirms that Eliza was the elder, and was b. ca. 1864, and not 1866. Elizabeth was b. ca. 1870, or (if the 1901 census can be relied upon) 1868.
Carl Stymiest wrote 7NOV2002: “I note that several families have Wilbert listed as the 1st child of Hugh Murray (1844-1934) and Elizabeth Taylor who m. Oct. 10, 1894. The dob given for this WILBERT MURRAY is, Oct. 24, 1893.†It would at first appear that two of the children listed in the 1901 census were Eliza’s by her second marriage. This would explain the three Janes/Janies/Jane E.s appearing in the 1901 census of Hugh Murray’s family and elsewhere to some extent. This confusion is not totally resolved. In particular, which Jane was Hugh’s birth daughter in 1901, and which the ‘adoptive’ daughter? She b. 1888 or she b. 1890? Since Wilbert MacKnight/Murray was b. 1893, and since Eliza’s second marriage was 15AUG1888, I have arbitrarily chosen the 1890 Jane as most likely being Eliza’s daughter by her second marriage.
Due to the often informal nature of adoption at the time, and due to the uncertainties regarding such fostering and surnames, it is my policy to revert to ancient customs. If an adult and child regard each other as parent and offspring, I accept that judgement regardless of genetic relationship. The relationship between parent and child is one that transcends genes. They share (through generational transmission), culture, values, history, religious outlook, etc. Also, one cannot overlook bonds of affection. Therefore an ‘adoptive’ child is in a very genuine sense a child of the adopting parent; often far more so than being a child of the genetic parent. Adoptees will recognize the distinction between one’s real family and ones genetic family; although they will also recognize the significance of being aware of and acknowledging genetic origins as well. Hence, in this case, I list Jane, Eliza’s daughter by her second marriage, as if she was Hugh’s daughter by his third marriage, and as a member of the Murray family. On the other hand, she is also a member of the MacKnight family, and the choice of defining relationships belongs to her and her descendants.
On the other hand, the 1891 census again raises the question as to who was the father of her son, Wilbert. Wilbert was b. 1893. This suggests that Wilbert was Hugh and Eliza’s son prior to their marriage.
