Surnames: Mills, Brown

We are looking for any informations related to James Mills who was born ABT 1839 in New Brunswick, Canada and married Mary E. Brown. The couple had at least 8 children, the information I have on James parents is that his father would be named William Mills and his mother's first name would be Abigail.

We can't seem to find any accurate information further then that. If someone have more informations and would be willing to share with us, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Too common a name. You really need to narrow him down to a county. I found one possible at familysearch.org but I didn't look at all of them for the 1881 census.

James Mills b. ca. 1838 and Mary E. Mills b. ca. 1845 were in Lincoln Parish, Sunbury Co., NB in 1881. Children were: Ella (8), David A. (7), Frances (5), Frank (3) and Bessy (1.) All were English, b. NB and Free Will Baptist, and James was a farmer.
I would assume his parents were the couple living with them; Jeremiah Mills, Sr. (ca. 1805) and his wife, ‘Susana’ (ca. 1812.)
James would appear to have been James F. Mills b. 1839, d. 1913, bur. Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB; with a wife, Mary Brown (b. 1844, d. 1928) and daughter, Ada Mills (b. 1884, d. 1977) buried with him.
In Lincoln Parish in the 1901 census James is b. 11FEB1839, Mary E. was b. 29OCT1844 and children were: Albert D. (7JUN1874), Frances A. (3APR1876), Bessie M. (20JUN1879), ‘Mable’ E. (20MAY1881), Ada L. E. (27APR1884), ‘Theressa’ L. (27JUN1886) and Irving J. (13NOV1889.) I do not place much credence on the birth-dates in the 1901 census and strongly recommend they be confirmed where possible.

JAMES F. MILLS b. 11FEB1839 (ca. 1838), d. 1913, bur. Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB, m. Long’s Hotel (Fredericton, York Co., NB?) by the Rev. Jos. McLeod 28DEC1871 MARY E. BROWN (b. 29OCT1844 (ca. 1845), d. 1928, bur. Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB), d/o David and Harriett Brown.
Although Mary is give as b. Rusagonis, I did not notice a Brown family in the 1851 census in Lincoln Parish. When married, she was given as of Burton Parish. I think she is the same in the family in that parish in 1851:

Brown David M Head 47 American farmer master Born in colony
Brown Harriet F Wife 35 American Born in colony
Brown George W M Son 12 American Born in colony
Brown Louisa F Daughter 10 American Born in colony
Brown Mary E F Daughter 6 American Born in colony

There were also Mills in Burton Parish in 1851, such as Samuel Mills b. ca. 1808 and his family; and James Mills b. ca. 1796 and his family. It is possible that Rusagonis was near or straddled parish boundaries.
children:
1. ALBERT DAVID (DAVID ALBERT) MILLS b. 7JUN1874
2. FRANCES A. MILLS b. 3APR1876
3. FRANK MILLS b. ca. 1878.
Possibly Frank Peabody Mills who m. Edna Rose Guthrie.
4. BESSIE ELMYEA MILLS b. 20JUN1879, m. WILLIAM TAYLOR ALEXANDER
5. MABEL E. MILLS b. 20MAY1881
6. ADA L. E. MILLS b. 27APR1884, d. 1977, bur. Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB
7. THERESA L. MILLS b. 27JUN1886
8. IRVING J. MILLS b. 13NOV1889

I should mention that Lincoln Parish borders York Co., NB; especially Fredericton, the captital; so many records of the family (marriages for example) might be recorded in York Co. Also, before 1785, Sunbury Co., NS included most of the River Saint John; rather than the much smaller area it now encompasses.
As early as 1789-99, John and William Mills are petitioning for lane in Sunbury Co.
See:

for the Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB.

JEREMIAH MILLS b. ca. 1805, m. SUSANNA _____ (b. Rusagonis, Sunbury Co., NB ca. 1810, and d. there 23NOV1900 age 90 years.)
Jeremiah Mills is in Lincoln Parish, Sunbury Co., NB in the 1851 census as:

Mills Jeremiah M Husband 46 British American A. Farmer By birth
Mills Susannah F Wife 39 British American By birth
Mills Phoebe F Daughter 16 British American By birth
Mills Ja. M Son 13 British American By birth
Mills Jeremiah M Son 10 British American By birth
Mills Rhoda F Daughter 8 British American By birth

Not far off are presumably his parents:

Mills John M Husband 80 N.S. A. Blacksmith October 1784
Mills Sarah F Wife 70 N.S. October 1783
Mills Solomon M Son 54 British American A. Farmer By birth
Mills John M Son 51 British American By birth
Mills Sarah F Daughter 51 British American By birth
Mills Abberry M Son 13 British American By birth
Mills Isreal M Grandson 11 British American By birth

children:
1. PHOEBE MILLS b. ca. 1835
2. JAMES F. MILLS b. 11FEB1839 (ca. 1838), d. 1913, bur. Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB, m. Long’s Hotel (Fredericton, York Co., NB?) by the Rev. Jos. McLeod 28DEC1871 MARY E. BROWN (b. 29OCT1844 (ca. 1845), d. 1928, bur. Rusagonis Station Cem., Sunbury Co., NB), d/o David and Harriett Brown
3. JEREMIAH MILLS b. Rusagonis, Sunbury Co., NB ca. 1840-1, d. Shaw Creek, Sunbury Co., NB 5OCT1888 age 48 years, m. 1NOV1864 ANNIE AMELIA BOYLES (b. ca. 1849)
4. RHODA MILLS b. ca. 1843

I recommend you visit and become familiar with the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick site at:

Particularly at the drop-down at 'Research Tools' is 'County Guides'. These will guide you to microfilms of census rerurns, probate records, marriage registers, church records, etc.; all available by interlibrary loan. These should assist you in finding information.

I live in Rusagonis, NB and I was looking for information on the Mills family from this are. They lived along the Rusagonis River at Rusagonis Station on a plot of land called " Mills Island"..the 1851 information posted is the line that lived in this area..James Mills and his family..his daughter Bessie married William Alexander who was from Rusagonis Station and is a relative of my husband's.Interestingly enough the other day my husband and son went to the old homestead place on Mills Island just to look around. It is only accessable by boat most of the time. They took pictures of the area which I would be glad to sent to any interested relatives of the Mills family. They moved from this island I believe in the late 1930's or early 1940's.hope this fills in a bit of info.

I read your post and am trying to find my g. grandfather's (Samuel Edgar Brown)family. Samuel's parents were George W. Brown of Oromocto, Sunbury County & Elizabeth Gamble of Fredericton Junction.
Samuel was born abt 1861 and married Harriett Augusta Brewer dit Hanson.
I am trying to figure out if the David Brown and Harriett that you mention in this post might be my Samuel's grandparents. I believe Harriett's maiden name might be Furnell from what I read on familysearch.com but not sure.
Would you be willing to share any info that you find as it appears we may be looking for the same family.

Hi.

The difficulty with a surname such as Brown is that it is so common as to be uncertain to deal with. Of the 78 George Brown's in NB in 1871, none seem immediately to be the one you mention. There was, in 1871, in Burton Parish, Sunbury Co., NB a Geo L. Brown (46) with a wife, Elizabeth (39) and with them Julia Dow (17) and Robt Hasty (12), but no Samuel. Nearby lived a widow, Elizabeth Brown (65).
There was, in 1871, a 'Samiel' Brown age 10, but he lived in Kent Co., NB and was the son of 'Samiel' and Jane Brown.
The surnames, Brewer and Hanson, I would associate with York Co., especially Douglas and Bright parishes, There were 252 Brown's in York Co., in 1871. These include two George W. Brown's, neither of which had a wife, Elizabeth, or a son, Samuel. There was one Samuel Brown, age 5, in Douglas Parish, s/o William and Mary Brown.
Samuel Brown b. ca. 1861 might be the Samuel Brown age 20 in Gladstone Parish, Sunbury Co., NB in 1881 apparently living alone; or possibly in the same dwelling as 'Murry' Boone b. ca. 1826. I would guess this to have been:

WILLIAM MURRAY BOONE b. ca. 1827-8, m. 14AUG1851 HANNAH MARIE NASON (b. ca. 1829, d. Tracy, Sunbury Co., NB 8MAR1905), d/o Lemuel and Anna (Dunlap) Nason

Samuel appears to have been the only Brown in Gladstone Parish at the time. There may have been a connection through the Dunlap's as, in Burton Parish, in 1881, were George (56) and Elizabeth (48) Brown with and Elizabeth Brown (75) and a West Brown (1).

Samuel Brown with a wife, _____ Hanson, was in St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB in 1903 when an unnamed daughter was born. Possibly he was the Samuel Brown living at St. Mary's Ferry with a wife, Hattie, in 1906. If this was Harriet Brewer, she would have had kin in the immediate area as, for example, the Haines' from Douglas Parish who ran the ferry and built the first, wooden bridge from St. Mary;'s Ferry to Carleton St. in Fredericton, as well of the Boone's of the Keswick area, cousins to the Sunbury Co. Boone's. This seems likely as Samuel and Harriet (Hanson) Brown had a daughter, ---l Winifred Brown, b. St. Mary's Parish in 1898. In 1910 he is Samuel E. Brown. Samuel E. Brown (b. Fredericton Junction ca. 1862) m. York Co. 3JUL1889 Hattie A. Brewer (b. Keswick, Douglas Parish, York Co., NB ca. 1869), d/o William and Martha. Samuel was the s/o George W. and Elizabeth Brown.

GEORGE W. BROWN b. Oromocto, Burton Parish, or Fredericton Junction, Sunbury Co., NB, m. ELIZABETH GAMBLE/GAMBLES (b. Fredericton Junction, Sunbury Co., NB).
Gamble may be a variation of another name, for example, Kimball, as in the 1851 census of Burton Parish:

Kimball Isabella F Head 49 Irish widow 1818
Kimball John M Son 25 farmer prop. Born in colony
Kimball Elizabeth F Daughter 22 Born in colony
Kimball Martha F Daughter 20 Born in colony
Kimball Samuel M Son 16 Born in colony
Kimball Richard M Son 14 Born in colony
Kimball James M Son 10 Born in colony

Elizabeth Kimball is likely the same who married James Cromwell in 1856. Even Campbell might be a variation as I have seen that surname as Camell, Cambell, Gambell, etc.
If George W. Brown was born in Burton Parish, then he would be:

Brown David M Head 47 American Born in colony
Brown Harriet F Wife 35 American Born in colony
Brown George W M Son 12 American Born in colony
Brown Louisa F Daughter 10 American Born in colony
Brown Mary E F Daughter 6 American Born in colony

There was also Zachariah Barnard Brown (ca. 1786-14MAY1870) of Burton Parish.
John S. Brown (b. 3APR1784) once lived in Burton Parish and had three sons, Charles, George and G. R. Brown. John and Zachariah appear to have been brothers both sons of Lt. Zachariah Barnard Brown. John's wife was:

ANN (NANCY) TAPLEY b. Burton Parish, Sunbury Co., NB 3APR1784, bpt. Maugerville Anglican Church 22JAN1800, d. AUG1882 age 88 (?) years, bur. Burton Courthouse Cem., Burton, Sunbury Co., NB, m. Capt. JOHN SKIDMORE BROWN (d. Indiantown, Portland Parish, Saint John Co., NB 2APR1878 age 94 years, buried Burton Courthouse Cemetery, Burton, Sunbury Co., NB), s/o Zachariah Bernard and Annis (Skidmore) Brown.

I think his son was George F. Brown who married his cousin, Ann Tapley, in 1855.
I do not see a marriage for George and Elizabeth in Sunbury Co., so they likely married in Fredericton. I would suggest checking the York County Marriage Registry.

So there is not a lot I can do from here. You probably have all of this, but there may be a hint or two.

Children:
1. CHARLES F. BROWN b. Fredericton Junction, Sunbury Co., NB 15MAR1858 (in 1901; 1857 on headstone, ca. 1863-5), d. Devon, St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB 5OCT1922 age 59 years, buried Taymouth Community Cemetery, St, Mary's Parish, York Co., NB, m. Gibson, St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB 10NOV1887 MARGARET JANE (JENNIE) URQUHART (b. Taymouth, St. MAry's Parish, York Co., NB 9JUN1849 (9JUN1858 in 1901, d. Taymouth, St. MAry's Parish, York Co., NB 27AUG1937 age 88 years, 2 months and 17 days), d/o James and Margaret (McBean) Urquhart.
Possibly the Charles Brown (32) with a wife, Margaret (33) in the 1891 census of St. Mary's Parish. Margaret would be Margaret J. Urquhart b. Taymouth, York Co., NB 9JUN1849, d. Taymouth 27AUG1937 age 88 years, 2 months and 17 days, d/o James and Margaret (McBean) Urquhart.
Possibly the Charles Brown (24) in Lincoln Parish in 1881, s/o Wm. (58) and Eliza (50) Brown. Siblings were Annie (21), 'Bulthea?' (17), George (15), Janie (13) and James (12). Eliza could be the Eliza Brown d. Maugerville, Sunbury Co., NB 29NOV1899 age 69 years. I suspect, however, that 'Bulthea'' was Bertha Austina Brown b. Marysville 9JUN1863, d/o William and Eliza (Priest) Brown. This family was in St. Mary's Parish in 1871 with William (49) and Eliza (41) having children Philip (20), William (16), Charles (13), Annie (12), Clara E. (9), Bertha (7), George (5), Jane (3) and James (2).
When Charles and Jane married they were both living in St. Mary's Parish but I do not find him there in 1881. The trouble with St. Mary's Parish is that there was a large, Brown family in the Penniac area making searching difficult. The Urquhart's I would expect to be further up the Nashwaak in the Taymouth area. For example, in 1881, a widow, Margaret 'Urqurheart' had a daughter, Jane, age 28. Margaret is given as Danish, but that appears to have been an error by the enumerator who continued ditto marks from Peter Sorenson b. Denmark, in the previous household. Judging by the McBean's in the are this was Margaret McBean (b. ca. 1824) and she was, if anything, Scottish. In 1871 Margaret Urquhart (ca. 1825) was the wife of James (ca. 1815) and Jane was age 21. Archibald McLean, who lives nearby, would suggest a proximity to Penniac. This rather raises the question as to whether your Brown's are not connected to the Penniac Brown's. In 1851 in St. Mary's Parish, they were:

Urquhart James M Husband 36 Native Lumberer
Urquhart Margaret F Wife 26 Native
Urquhart Angus M Son 6 Native
Urquhart Margary F Daughter 4 Native
Urquhart Margaret F Daughter 1 Native
Urquhart Alexander M G. Father 69 Native Widower

Margaret most likely being Margaret Jane Urquhart. There were 76 Brown's, but I see none that might be a George W. Brown b. 1838 or earlier.
2. SAMUEL EDGAR BROWN b. Fredericton, Junction, Sunbury Co., NB 9APR1862 (ca. 1861-2, 11APR1861 in 1901, 1862 on headstone), d. North Devon (Fredericton), St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB 15FEB1931 age 69 years, 10 months and 6 days, buried Sunny Bank Cemetery, South Devon, St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB, m. 3JUL1889 HARRIET (HATTIE) AUGUSTA HANSON (BREWER) (b. Keswick, Douglas Parish, York Co., NB 7MAY1867 (ca. 1869, 11MAY1868 in 1901, 1869 on headstone), baptized Anglican Church, Douglas Parish, York Co., NB 17JUN1870, d. Victoria General Hospital, Fredericton, York Co., NB 17JAN1955 age 87 years, 8 months and 10 days, buried Sunny Bank Cemetery, South Devon, St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB), d/o Sarah Ann Hanson (William and Martha Brewer?).
Samuel and Harriet's death registrations give some information. Hers only gives her parents as both surnamed Hanson. From this I would suspect that her parents died when she was young. It also states that both parents were b. England, something I would doubt. The Hanson's were fairly established as a family in NB by 1871 and were, at the time, generally considered to have been Dutch. Even the Dutch bit I would question. She lived at 97 Smith St. when she died. At a guess she may have been Harriet Hanson b. ca. 1869 in Bright Parish (once part of Douglas Parish), York co., NB in 1881, d/o 'Michel' (68) and Maria (52) Hanson. However, Harriet Augusta Hanson was baptized 17JUN1870 the d/o Sarah Ann Hanson. Sarah Ann (baptized 28FEB1852) was the daughter of Michael and Maria Hanson. Sarah A. Hanson (31) was with the family in 1871. Michael's wife is said to have been Mariah Drew. This is supported by the death registration of Sarah Ann Hanson's brother, Alfred Hanson, who married Huldah Brewer.
I would guess that the William and Sarah Brewer who she gave as her parents when she married were Hattie's mother, Sarah Ann Hanson, and a husband, William Brewer.
Samuel and Hattie Brown lived in St. Mary's Parish in 1901, with people such as Murray Brewer, Sarah Haines and Lewis Boone listed on the same page, so probably in the St. Mary's Ferry neighbourhood.

Thomas.

Thank you for getting back to me.
Your right, I do have the info regarding the Hanson's and Brewer's. My mother is still alive so that is how I know some of the info. I believe D. Wm. Brewer & Martha Morehouse were the adopted parents as it was the name Brewer she used when she got married; but she put Hanson on all her children's birth records.
You might be right about the name Gamble possibly being Kimball as they were related to an Edgar Kimble from Boston.
I shall have to really search the Brown's as there are at least two separate Brown families living in the Fredericton area. One of the families were African.
My g. Grandmother Hattie said she was of Scandinavian descent so I believe that Sarah Ann is her mother as per Douglas Anglican Church Christenings.
Samuel Brown living in St. Mary's is my Samuel. They had 5 children. Stillman Edgar b. 1894, Ether Winifred b. 1898, Harriett Leola b. 1903, Marion Gladys b. 1907(my grandmother) and Douglas Charles b. 1910.
Anyway, once again, thank you for all your efforts and the info you sent me. It is greatly appreciated.

I have since found out that my G. Grandfather "Samuel Edgar Brown" and his brother "Charles F. Brown" were the s/o George W. Brown & Elizabeth Sambles (spelt Sanbills in the 1851 NB Census).

Samuel's death cert. said his mother was Elizabeth Gamble and Charles' death cert. said Eliza Fambles.

I still haven't found any children for Charles.

Elizabeth Sambles was the d/o William Sambles of England & Rose Anne Watters of Belfast, Ireland. Wm. arrived in Canada in 1830 and Anne in 1831.
