Surnames: POTTS, BATTLES
Looking for ancesters and descendants of Joseph William Pots and Eunice Louise Battles of St. John, New Brunswick. They would have been born about 1837 and had 15 children. One of whom was the mayor of St. John briefly before his death (Frank Leslie Potts). I was told they came from England but now believe that Joseph was born in St. John.

Any information is welcome.

Hello, I know that it has been 14 years since you posted this but I just came across it now. My husband was told that he is a descendent of Joseph and Eunice (Battles) Potts through his grandmother, Gladys. I can not find any info to prove this and I have no info on this side of the family. I was wondering if you had any info on the Potts family that I could use to see if my husband's family is from this family. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I took a look at NB archives online and found some info that may show your Gladys was descended from Joseph and Eunice.

From your surname I am assuming that Gladys was wife of Joseph Hatfield

This is the info I found

Joseph Wilfred Hatfield, age 30, son of Joseph Hatfield and Ada M. Mellick
married Feb. 16, 1932 - Saint John, NB to
Gladys May Potts, age 19, daughter of Roy F. Potts and Mabel Mitchell

Roy Flewelling Potts born June 24, 1887 Saint John, parents Frank Lesslie Potts and Elizabeth May Flemming
this was a delayed birth record from 1952 - with his Aunt Mary Elizabeth Green giving the info

Frank Leslie Potts , auctioneer, died Jan. 7, 1926 - age 57, born May 20, 1868 Saint John
parents Joseph W. Potts and Eunice Battles

I did not find a marriage for Roy and Mabel though so cannot say absolutely that this is the same Roy in birth record but sure seems to fit.

there is a border crossing Canada to US dated Feb. 1918
POTTS
Mabel, age 28, Canadian
Gladys, age 5, Canadian
both going to husband/father Roy F. Potts 176 Duke St.
last permanent address: Saint John, NB
final destination Eastport, Maine
it asks if ever in US before and says yes - May 1917
it says they are going to visit Mabel's father O. Mitchell, 15 Franklin St.
Mabel shown as born Eastport, ME and Gladys as born Saint John, NB

there is a WW1 attestation paper for Roy Flewelling Potts - address 176 Duke St. St. John NB
wife Mabel Potts, same address
Roy's birthdate shown as June 24, 1890 (so 3 years off from the birth record, but his Aunt could
certainly have gotten the year wrong after more than 60 years ?)
the attestation was declared Oct. 3, 1917 Toronto

since Mabel was born in ME and I did not find their marriage in NB I looked in Maine records and found it.
June 21, 1911 Eastport ME
Roy Flewelling Potts age 23, auctioneer, born St. John NB
father F.L. Potts, auctioneer, born St. John, NB - residence St. John, NB
mother Lizzie M. Fleming born St. John, residence St. John
AND
Mabel Laura Mitchell, age 22, born Bocabee, NB
father Orville Mitchell, factory employee, born Bocabee NB residence Eastport ME
mother Matilda E. Harris, born St. George NB, residence Eastport ME

so this matches with the birth record for Roy as to his parents names
and it also shows that his father was an auctioneer which matches with the death record for Frank Leslie Potts, son of Joseph and Eunice

so it does seem to all match up

Hi, one correction
I didn't mean to say that the border crossing said they were going to husband/father Roy.
They were going to Mabel's father in Maine
husband/father Roy was the contact in Canada

Hello, sorry that I have not been able to get back to you on this matter. I took a break for a bit so my brain could rest. Anyway, I would like to thank you so much for the info. It definitely helps me out a lot more. I was wondering at all if you know if Gladys had any siblings? I can't seem to find any info out on that. Anything that you can find or have would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.
