I"m looking for info on a David Allen born around 1816 in Westmorland County, NB. He was the son of Somers Allen and Eunice or Sarah Polly.
|
Correction: David Allen b. abt 1816
Sorry about that...Somers' wife would have been Charlotte Anderson not Eunice or Sarah Polly
|
And David was born 1849 not 1816.
|
Although I don't believe I have your David at this time,I have some Allen,Anderson,MacPherson from Westmorland and Cumberland Co.'s around this time..... If you email me some more details perhaps I can help. wharfrat@nbnet.nb.ca

Re: Benjamin Allen b 1735; Scotland
Benjamin Allen born in 1735, A scotchman. Moved to Fort Cumberland and married a Miss Somers. Thier family consisted of 8 sons and 3 daughters. George, Ephraim, Eliphalet, David, Benjamin, Matthew, JOnas, and James. Benjamin Allen died at Baie Verte where his mortal remains lie in the old churchyard. On his tombstone is the following inscription: In memory of Benjamin Allen Departed this life, April 14th, 1823, aged 88 years. "Remember man as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I, As I am now so will you be, Remember man, you have to die." I have some info on each of their children but will pass to you what I have on David. He married Eunice Polley and settled at Bayside where they continued to reside until their death. They had six sons and five daughters. Somers, Jonah, Johnston, Matthew, Gilbert and Job. The daughters were Melissa who married Winslow KAy, Rebecca who married Joshue Read, Eunice who married a man by the name of Temple in Boston, Cynthia who married Wells Trenholm of Fort Lawrence, and Jane who married Thomas Wood of Amherst.
Jonah Allen, son of David Allen left 6 sons, Charles, Jacob, Joseph, Arthur, William and Joshua and 2 daughters, Eliza, and Sarah who married Howard Murray.
Johnston Allen, son of David Allen left a family consisting of Adam, David, Edmund, Alder, Alice and Amy, wife of John G. Lamb of Port Elgin.

I see you posted the blurb on Shy Ben Allen that is in the early histories of Westomorland County.
Unfortunately, it's riddled with errors.
The authors mixed up Shy Ben Allen with the rebel Col.John Allan. John was born in Scotland, Ben was born in either Connecticut or Mass.
Also, while you can still see Shy Ben's tombstone in the graveyard on the Cherry Burton Road, just outside of Port Elgin, he and Sarah (who died, to the best of our knowledge, about a year after Ben) were buried on the family farm. Part of that farm is now a little provincial picnic park in Baie Verte. The tombstone was found in a field and spent a while stuck behind the barn before it was placed in the graveyard. Ironicially, I believe Ben once owned the land that graveyard is on.

That information on Ben's parentage gels with information I've received from my late cousin Mel Trenholm, who did extensive research on the Trenholms and Allens.
As for that information on Sarah, I've seen a copy of a document listing the original settlers in Moncton including the children of Matthias -it's reproduced in Les Bowser's"The Search for Heinrich Stief". The Somers listed on that document were Mathias and Christianna (Null), Anna Catarina, Efa, Sophia, Andrew, Christianna and another daughter whose name is hard to read. I've never seen Sarah listed as Sarah Jane, or that date of death. Where did that information come from?

info rec'd from Bernice Flemming-Carr who has done research back to RALPH ALLEN b circa 1532 England. I'm also working in conjunction with my Uncle Gordon Allen from Moncton, my father Cecil Allen from Port Elgin, my mother Mina McGlashing from Cape Tormentine, and from info passed to us by my grandmother Aletha Sprague. Plan on a visit to NB cemetaries this spring; if it ever warms up! Will keep you posted on anything we might find of interest. Over & Out, Jane

Who was your grandfather Cecil's father?
My family are from the Cape Tormentine, Cape Spear, Hardy Corner area. My Allen connections come from Catherine Allen and Cordelia Allen who married Adam Polley and Henry Goodwin.
