Hugh Johnston was my g-g-grand father. I have his, Ann's and John's birthdays the same as yours. To my knowledge (and I've been looking for 30+ years), John was their only child.
He married Harriet McDonald, they had a number of children with John dying in the late 1880s. His widow and the children moved to Dayton (Shelton) Washington, USA.
I have never been able to locate Hugh's parents.
jack johnston
To follow up with my post here...

I stated that I thought that Joseph Dunham might be tied to the dunhams of Deer Isle, Maine.

I found a Deer Isle Dunham and we used family tree dna to test his Y-DNA. We are not related - but I need to find another Deer Isle Dunham to confirm.

I also found that Joseph Dunham Jr of Mascarene/St George was born in Long Island, NY - probably before 1783 - so my dunham clan are most probably loyalists...

Jeff Dunham

Erin,

I have worked for 20 years on the Hetheringtons of St Andrews. William was stationed in Northern Ireland and then shipped to Halifax with his unit. After a short time there, he was deployed to St Andrews, NB. Either in Halifax or Northern Ireland he married Bridget McCann, born Ireland ca 1801. Their marriage record is not in the St Andrews church records.

Between 1819 and 1835 William and Bridget Hetherington's children were christened in All Saints Anglican Church in St. Andrew's. In the margin of the church records are also the actual birth dates. This first All Saints was located St where the drug store presently stands at the corner of King and Water St. There is a narrow lane behind the drug store called Church Lane. The church was replaced in the 1850's by the present All Saints Church further up the road on King St.

I will give you the actual birth dates according to the church records. Christening for each was shortly after. All children born St Andrews. I have visited the site where their house stood and have land records.

1. Maria Jane born 27 Nov 1819; died 22 Dec 1896 in Wichita, KS. Married 1st William Brickwell Salem, Ma 1845 and 2nd Courtland H Wallace 1856 in Vermilion Co, IL.

2. Mary born 25 Mar 1822; died 27 Jan 1899 Salem, MA. Married 1st Thomas Little in 1840 at St Andrews and 2nd Daniel Brown ca 1846 probably in Salem, MA.

3. Ann/Nancy born 8 July 1824; died 27 May 1898 in Salem, MA. Married first Daniel Lang in 1848 at Salem and 2nd Maurice Coughlin in 1868 at Salem.

4. Margaret born 2 Nov 1826; died 10 Aug 1895 at Salem. Married James A Townsend in 1846 at St Andrews.

5. Hannah (mine) born 13 Feb 1829 (lied about her age as did sister Maria Jane); died 12 May 1878 at Merrimac, MA. Married Alexander McKenzie 1852 at St Andrews. He died in St John, NB in 1866, and she came to Salem, MA. Hannah had relationship ca 1869 with Van Waugh resulting in daughter. When Hannah died in 1878 it was stated that she married William Bellel in Feb of that year, but no record was found and it is doubtful they were married.

6. Matilda born 2 April 1831 and died Dec 1833 in St Andrews.

7. Sarah born 1 Sept 1835; died 27 Sept 1847 in Salem, MA.

8. John born Feb 1841; died June 1844 at St Andrews.

When William Hetherington, a "tide waiter" at the fort in St Andrews died, widow Bridget remarried at St Andrews widower blacksmith Thomas Quaine/Quain/Quin in 1849. However, she left him and came south to Salem where her girls were (all but Margaret who came later after her husband died.) Bridget (McCann) (Hetherington) Quin died at Salem 9 May 1849. There are no parents or town in Ireland listed on her death record, but it is definitely she as land and probate research in St Andrews prove.

What else would you like?

Thank you for the response.

Almira Christie was actually born Almira Kelly (thank you, Shirley). She was the step-daughter of John Christie of St. Andrews. Her parents were John and Mary Kelly of St. Andrews. John Kelly died before 1849.

John Christie (born about 1801 in Ireland) and Mary's family appear in the 1851 of St. Andrews. John Christie and Mary were short lived and it took some piecing to figure out where the children were in successive census records.

Seeking information on Ralph Taylor who came to Charlotte County in 1784. Ralph Taylor has been described as an English naval officer with Mowatt's fleet but I have not been able to substantiate.

Ralph Taylor apparently married in Charlotte County in or about the year 1785. He was known to have at least two sons, George (b around 1785) and James (birthday unknown). Ralph Taylor died at sea by 1795. His young son James was apprenticed to a McFarlane (1807).

The only documentation I have for Ralph Taylor is indirect. I have found a couple of deed transfers by his son, James Taylor in the early 19th century. The recitation sections of these deeds makes mention of his mother Patience McFarlane (she remarried in 1795, Walter McFarlane).

Granddaughter, Martha Taylor Ferguson (widow of Alex Ferguson)provided a brief summary of her father's naval career to the area newspapers in the late 19th century.

I have been researching the family of Walter Flynn and was able to locate his Will (1834) at Family Search: New Brunswick County Deed Registry Books, Charlotte, Volume N, pages 407-408. The books also contain information about the transfer and sale of blocks of the original land grant in subsequent generations. I believe that his wife Ann(e) was Anne Brown, a daughter of James Brown from Machias, Maine. Provincial Archives of New Brunswick (online) has records of "Old Revolutionary Soldiers and Their Widows" which contain the memorials of Ann Flynn who received her husband's war pension after he died.

Charlotte,

I am 4th generation grandson of Jeremiah Morrissey and while in St. John this summer I stoped at archive researcher gave me this information on Jeremiah

Good afternoon Mr. Morrissey,

I have looked into your request and found a few items that may be of interest to you:

According to our records, Jeremiah Morrissey is listed in the New Brunswick census of 1851, where he is said to be 35 years of age, living in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic parish of Charlotte County. It is indicated that his date of entry into the country is 1834.

I also found a listing for a Jeremiah Morrison (see link below), which could mean an entirely different person, but except for the surname, the other information seems to match: http://automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/SplitView.jsp?id=42... .

In the New Brunswick census of 1861 (found in our library records), we have listings for a Jerry Morrisy, head of household, born in Ireland, of Roman Catholic religion, living in the parish of Dumbarton, Charlotte County. Also found with his name are daughters Honnorah, Johannah, Catherine and Mary, as well as son Thomis. We can assume with reasonable certainty that this is the same family! (Keep in mind that names can and most likely have been misspelled). There is no listings for a Mary (O'brien) Morrisy, his wife, because she died December 24, 1859 ( If you access the following link, there is a notice of death http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/Cemeteries/Details.aspx?cultur... ).

There is no record of a Jeremiah Morrisy living in Charlotte County in the 1871 census. However, in the 1870 United States Federal Census records, there is a listing for a Jeremiah Morrisey (born in Ireland about 1800) living in Calais, county of Washington, Maine. He is living with his daughter Joanna and her husband Duncan McDonald (which, I believe, would correspond to the son-in-law that you had described). He is still present in the 1880 United States Federal Census records (this time as Jeremiah Morrisy).

There are no census records for the state of Maine in 1890 (they were destroyed in a fire), but there is a census record for 1900, in which Jeremiah Morrissey (written in any form) is not present. We have to assume that he died sometime between 1880 and 1900, in Calais.

I realize that you had asked for information verifying where Jeremiah was born in Ireland. Unfortunately, we have no records of this. The only possible clue is the year he left Ireland to come to New Brunswick (1834). You could research passenger lists ( you might find information here : http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/index.htm ). Another idea I would recommend is contacting the town of Calais, and asking about their cemetery records. Calais is a small town, and most likely only has one or two Roman Catholic cemeteries. Some gravestones list the person's birthplace in addition to other facts. If that is the case for Jeremiah Morrissey, you would have your answer! (I must warn you that it might no be the case)

I hope some of this information has been of use to you. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know. Best of luck with your research!
For Wright Researchers

Many Wright ancestors have heard this story growing up. My own Mother would tuck me in and tell me a story when she was young. I especially liked hearing this story. When I first started making my family tree, I spoke to Dale Wright, mentioning this story. We both laughed, and he said he would like to know which Wright this was. This is for Dale Wright who inspired me, and my mother Geneva for all the wonderful stories, so it is with great pleasure that I share this with you.

This was viewed on NewsBank,American Historical Newspapers.
Date: 02-17-1795, Volume 1: Issue: 20 Page 4
Location:Brookfield, Massachusetts.
Headline: Dereham, England; Mr. Wright,
Article Type:News/Opinion

Story:

The following whimsical robbery lately took place at Dereham, in England. The poultry house of Mr. Wright was broken open, and robbed of six geese; the robbers leaving behind them a six pence, tied to the gander's neck, in a piece of paper, containing the following lines:

Mr. Wright,
I wish you good night
'Tis time for me to wander,
I've bought your geese,
At a penny a piece,
And left it with your gander.

I am researching the following Loyalists who were granted land in Pennfield in the time frame of 1784 to 1788.
As I am sure the fire destroyed many records, and some of these may have moved to other areas.

Captain William Wright.
William was the Captain of the 15th Company of Loyalist.
He was in charge of six Companies of Loyalists.
Land Grant to The Wolves Island. 5 August, 1786

W. J. Wright. Pennfield, 100 Acres #26S.

A. Wright. Pennfield, 51 Acres #30.

Jonathan Wright. Pennfield, #24S & 23S.

Also Looking for James, Leah, Winnifred and Rueben Wright.

The Vroom Papers states that Matthew Walker's name appears as a grantee of a "farm lot". This would suggest to me to be outside the town proper. This could be confirmed by looking in the Crown Land Grant Index Book which describes the location of lots.

Seeking any additional information on Loyalist Matthew Walker who, according to Esther Clark Wright’s “The Loyalists of New Brunswick”, settled in Scoodic [now St. Stephen], abt 1783. His occupation may have been a carpenter. According to the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada he may have been one of the grantees of Morristown [also now St. Stephen] and part of the Port Matoon Association. I’m of the mind that he may have migrated again, finally settling down in Halifax NS and marrying. Any info on this UEL would be appreciated and might help me break one of my brick walls.
