Hi Ginger! Thomas Quin or Quain, blacksmith of St Andrews, was married to Mary Barry. After she died, he married Bridget (McCann) Hetherington, widow of William Hetherington, tide waiter at the fort. Although they married 17 June of 1849 by Rev. James McDevitt, she was shown as Bridget Harrington living in her home with daughter Hannah in the 1851 census. She was also called a widow which is not true, but had possibly left him. The only other possibility is that the enumeration began prior to their marriage in 1849. Ancestry shows that the census process for 1851 began in 1849 and continued through 1852.
Thomas was shown in the 1851 census living with son Patrick and daughter Honora. He was called head of the household. Thomas Quain died on August 8, 1874. His obituary mentions that he had a surviving family, but there was no reference to a wife. That is because his wife Bridget (McCann) (Hetherington) Quin died in Salem, MA 9 May 1867 where she had gone to be with her daughters who were already living there.
Bridget is my 4th great grandmother. I would appreciate my further information that you have, and I will be happy to share the rest of what I have.. Hope this helps. My email is
