I am looking for information on Charles F. Davenport and his ancestors.
Charles F. Davenport was born 19 JUL 1863, and died 25 FEB 1898. He married Fannie Mariah Foster who was born 22 JUN 1862, in Carleton County. She was the daughter of Seth Foster III and Sarah Mariah English. Their children were:
Fred E. Davenport born 13 AUG 1891
Ruth Beatrice Davenport was born 19 NOV 1892
Eliza Fern Davenport was born 15 MAY 1895, and died in Stacyville Maine.

Fern Davenport married William Carleton Hunt in Stacyville, Maine on Monday September 23, 1912. I have some information on this line if anyone is interested

According to the IGI Charles F. Davenport was b. Island Falls, Aroostook Co., Maine 19JUL1863. This could mean he was a s/o (or grandson of) Samuel (b. NB ca. 1808) and Charlotte (b. NB ca. 1817) Davenport in Fairfield, Aroostook Co., ME in 1880; but Charles is not with them in that census. A more convoluted family, in Chapman, Aroostook Co., in 1880, is that headed by John Swanback (b. Germany ca. 1841.) His wife is 'Sharlott' (b. Maine ca. 1842), and a step-father is Samuel G. Davenport (b. NB ca. 1807, father b. NY, mother b. Rhode Island.) Since two children, surname Davenport, are described as John's step-children, and Amos Davenport as a brother-in-law; I assume that Charlotte was Samuel G. Davenport's daughter-in-law in a 2nd marriage; that is, she first married as son of Samuel; and 2ndly m. John Swanback.
Samuel Davenport (b. ca. 1808) had both parents b. Maine; so there appears to be no direct relationship between the two Samuel's.
If Charles' family was originally in NB, then there were several interesting petitions in Carleton Co. Gabriel Davenport made several between 1794 and 1820; with one in York Co. in 1788. A Samuel Davenport made one in 1826. Gabriel was granted land in Woodstock Parish (then in York Co.) 22AUG1787; and then in Northampton Parish 10DEC1824; as was a Joseph Davenport, likely a son. By 1867-8, the name seems mostly in Victoria Co., NB; particularly Samuel Davenport in Arthurette, Gordon Parish, Victoria Co.
At:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lallen/settlers%20L...
is indicated that Samuel and William Davenport settled in Plymouth Grant, Washington Co., ME in 1836. Since the accompanying deposition mentions 'Restook River', I assume this was later Aroostook Co. The deposition suggests (as do some of the surnames) that these were from NB; even Carleton Co. and/or Victoria Co. (then part of Carleton Co.); as there is a mention of Perth-Andover. The Samuel in 1836 is in Plymouth Grant in 1850, b. NB ca. 1808; wife, Charlotte (b. NB ca. 1817), and children: Harriet (12), Charlotte (10), James (8), Julia (6), Justin (4) and Amos (2); all b. Maine. Samuel is also given elsewhere as arrived in Aroostook Co. by 1829. A Joseph Davenport arrived 1836.
We come to something interesting here. In 1880, there were two, contemporary, Samuel Davenport's. One with a wife, Charlotte, and another the 'step-father' of John Swanback. The 1850 Samuel appears to be both; the one with the wife, Charlotte (b. ca. 1817) and the one with the son, Amos (John Swanback's brother-in-law.) Also, it is said that Gabriel Davenport was b. NY, and may have been a Loyalist servind with the King's American Regiment. Samuel G. Davenport (b. NB ca. 1807 in 1880), had a father b. NY, and a mother b. Rhode Island. I have seen duplications in census returns before; and this may be such a case. See:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Maine::da...
Amos alos appears to appear twice, but with Samuel he was b. ca. 1850 (ca. 1848 in 1850), and with Samuel G., Amos was b. ca. 1845. John Jwanback's wife, 'Sharlott', was b. ca. 1842 may be Charlotte (the daughter) b. ca. 1840 in the 1850 census. AT:

Looking for links re Gabriel Davenport (born abt 1754 in NY) Married Abigail Wolverton

Another is:

I am looking for info on the family of Gabriel Davenport b c 1759 in Westchester Co., MY. He came to Canada after the Am Revolution and went back to NY once or twice to receive what was promised him ...

At:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lallen/early_settle...

(about 1830) are mentions of Gabriel, Joseph, Samuel, William Davenport. Gabriel is mentioned as having his land stolen in the American Revolution at:
http://www.historicpelham.com/BlogArchive/Blog20060830.htm
Other names (including one of may ancestors) suggests Westchester Co., NY. 'North-Catle' means North Castle, now Armonk. In a 1763 list of freeholders in North Castle, Westchester Co., NY is a Robert Davenport. Probably Gabriel's father. The IGI, howver, gives Gabriel b. North Castle ca. 1762 (questionable date, also ca. 1738, also ca. 1760-1843), as the s/o Samuel and Elsie Davenport.
I would think that the Loyalists, Thomas and William Davenport, in Digby, Nova Scotia in 1784 were likely related (many of those Loyalists were also from Westchester Co., NY); possibly even brothers.

In 1839, Gabriel Davenport, of the Parish of Andover, County of Carleton (now in Victoria Co.) asked for a pension as a soldier of the American Revolution. See Records of Old Revolutionary Soldiers and Their Widows, at:
http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/SearchPortal.aspx?L=EN&K...
He said he was age 75 (b. ca. 1764), enlisted in the King's American Regiment in 1776, served in Rhode Island, arrived in NB in 1783.

The above is very speculative, and incomplete; but it suggests some ideas. It is possible that the IGI entry which gives Charles' place-of-birth is based on a birth record; but why not name his parents?

As I mentioned, there is more bits and pieces on-line; but I was trying to stick to a 'theme'. Judging by the other settlers in the area (as well as other hints) the Davenports came from NB. If true, this suggests a Loyalist family. I could only find one such, and there weren't that many Davenport's; so the idea is they are likely one family. In Aroostook Co., that last assumption isn't necessarily true.
I was intrigued by the fact that Samuel stated his father was from NY and mother from Rhode Island; combined with Gabriel's stay on Rhode Island as a young soldier. I may be way off-base, but the theory I would look at is:

Samuel in Westchester Co. had a son, Gabriel, who had a son, Samuel; and that Charles was the latter Samuel's son or grandson. This may explain why Charles married in Carleton Co.; he was there because he had relatives there. In the 1871 census of Carleton Co. I noted Davenport's, isolate instances, as farm labourers for example. In at least one case, the young man was b. US.
I think Davenport's in the Perth-Andover area of Victoria Co., NB are likely related. An example is a message at:
http://new-brunswick.net/new-brunswick/guestbook/99.html

Foster - Davenport Family Reunion Muniac Provincial Park, Muniac, N.B. July 3 & $, 1999. Camping Available. Looking for Descendants of Thomas Foster & Suzie Clark, Alex Foster & Joanne Hartsgrove, Timothy Davenport & Sarah Clark, Thomas Foster & Catherine Davenport.

There are, in 1901, a number of them in the Grand Falls and Drummond Parish, Victoria Co. area (perhaps the same area.) One notable example is the family of Maurice (b. 18JUL1849) and Marie (19JUL1865) Sirois. a grandmother is Marie Davenport (9MAY1820) and a brother-in-law is John Davenport (13SEP1846); so, presumably, Marie Davenport was Marie Sirois' grandmother.
On the other hand, the Davenport's in St. Mary's Parish. York Co., NB; judging by the 1881 census, were descended from William (b. Ireland ca. 1840) and Mary Ann (Young) (b. Ireland ca. 1845) Davenport. Their two eldest children were b. Australia, one b. at sea, and the younger in NB. William was an engineer; possibly working at the Marysville cotton factory. These would not appear to be connected; but a general rule-of-thumb may be that, before 1850, most, if not all, in NB were related.
Tmothy Davenport, in Kent Parish, Carleton Co., NB in 1881, b. NB ca. 1849 was likely related.
James Davenport b. NB ca. 1844 was described as Irish, but could be related.
Mary Davenport, in Drummond Parish, Victoria Co., NB in 1881, was b. Quebec ca. 1821. Her son, John M. Davenport was b. US (probably Maine) ca. 1851. Apparently this is Marie in 1901; and speaks to alliances to Acadian and Quebecois families.
Then in Gordon Parish (likely Arthurette), Victoria Co., NB is Mary Davenport, a widow, b. NB ca. 1811; living with Donald and Margaret Fraser and their children. Margaret is likely Mary's daughter.
In spite of these hints, there seems little to connect them; and little research seems to have been done.
A good web site to wade through is at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbcarlet/
I found a baptism of two children (un-named) of Gabriel and Mrs. Davenport, 3AUG1800. Not very informative, but indicates about when they had children.
The Carleton Co. web site is very good for census returns. For example, there are links to Maine returns. It takes time to find your way around. A transcription of the 1860 census includes:
http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/me/aroostook/18...
listing, with William and Mary Johnson, in Fort Kent, Aroostook Co., ME: Mary (12), Charles (10) and Ellen (6) Davenport; apparently without parents. Mary Johnson (25) may be an older sister or aunt? Mary, age 12, should be in the 1850 census. At:
http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/me/aroostook/18...
Is the family of Frederick (ca. 1805) and Mary (ca. 1820) Davenport; with a daughter, Mary, age 3. Note that Mary, Sr. was b. Quebec (Canada.) Was this the Marie in Victoria Co., NB in 1901?

14 3 3 Davenport Frederick 45 M farmer Me.
15 3 3 Davenport Mary 30 F Canada
16 3 3 Davenport Alonso 9 M Maine
17 3 3 Davenport Eunice 8 F Maine
18 3 3 Davenport John 6 M Maine
19 3 3 Davenport Mary 3 F Maine

If Mary and Marie were the same person, then John (b. ca. 1844) in 1850 should be John b. 13SEP1846 in 1901 and ca. 1851 in 1881. Considering the variances in census returns (the 1901 census particularly is usually a year off), it is possible.

A very confusing family. The only thing I can suggest is gather everything (even those persons not connected as they can help eliminate others) and piece the bits together.

This is an old post. I'm not sure who Charles Davenport is, but Samuel Davenport and his wife Charlotte Grey Davenport were my 3x great grandparents. They are buried in Dexter Maine in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Any way, Charlotte who was married to John Swanback, Samuel was not her step father, it is a type-o. Samuel was her father and William and Archie were Charlotts children by a man with the last name of Ackerly. Amos was her brother.
These are the children of Samuel and Charlotte Grey Davenport that I know they had
Charlotte
Caroline
Harriett
Julia Ann
Francis
Justis
Amos
These are mentioned in obits and birth records, but I have never found them on any census records.
Arletta
Ida
Grandchildren that lived with him
William Ackerly and Archie Ackerly. Also known as William and Archie Davenport.
Samuel also at one time had his sister Mary living with them when they first came to Maine. She was mentally challenged.
He did serve with the Kings American Regiment and is listed on a list of men that received land grants.
His obit can be read at Abbot Memorial Library online. I hope this straightens things out a little
