I'm looking for any information on Solomon Carr or his son John Carr. Both are buried at Mackenzie Corner.

Ken,
Here is what we know about this particular Solomon Carr and his son John:

Solomon Carr arrived in Canada with his wife Jane McRae in 1842. They settled in a rural community called Elmwood, which is near Debec, which is near Woodstock in Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada. We do not know from exactly where in County Donegal they came or how they entered New Brunswick. As there are several Solomon Carrs in this family line, I will refer to this Solomon Carr as Solomon1 Carr and number the others accordingly.

When Solomon1 and Jane arrived in Canada, from County Donegal according to their tombstone, they had four children with them: Margaret (b. 1832 in Ireland), John (b. 17 March1833 in Ireland), George (b. 18 May1837 in Ireland) and Andrew (b.1839 in Ireland). After arriving in Canada, they had several more children: Katherine, Solomon2 (b.1845 and died in 1854, about ten years old), Jane (b. 1847) and Rebecca (b. 1848). We have very little information on some of these children, especially the girls.

Son George, born in 1837 in Ireland, had several children and one of them was Solomon3 Carr. The son's full name was Solomon3 Huestis Carr and he married and lived in Carleton County all his life. His life, and that of his family, is fairly well documented.

Solomon1's son John, the line in which you are interested, also married and lived his entire life in Carleton County. John's line is also our line and we have hundreds of descendants in our information, far too many for this forum. With respect to John, who died 1 February 1904, he married Margaret Graham (b. 4 March 1845) on 23 August 1866. Margaret died on 8 January 1922. Margaret and John Carr had eight children:

Elijah S.
John Arthur
Idama Jane
J. Walter
G. Chesley
Edgar L.
Clarence William
Colvin (not Calvin) McRae (our direct line)

This may tend to confuse you but there was at least one other Solomon4 Carr living in Carleton County in the mid 1800's. He was the son of James Carr and Ann McBride. This family came to Elmwood from County Donegal in 1833, nine years ahead of Solomon1 Carr and Jane McRae. There is quite possibly a family connection but we cannot prove it yet.

In any case, there are some references to a Solomon Carr marrying Elizabeth Price Murphy and having several children. These children and their descendants are known but we do not know for certain who this Solomon Carr is. The descendants think he may have used the name "Richard" as well as "Solomon" but this is unconfirmed. Many of this Solomon's descendants now live in the USA. This Solomon4 Carr died before 1910 but we have no record of his death or burial. We do know that he listed is father as having come from Ireland and that the father lived in Canterbury, which is not too far from Elmwood. I give you this information in case you find references to "Solomon Carr" in your research. There are many Solomon Carrs both in Canada and the USA and they can get confusing.

As stated earlier, we have hundreds of descendants for the Solomon1 and John Carr you asked about. If we can help you any further, or you can be of assistance to us (I don't think we have a Ken Carr in the database) please contact me.

Kindest regards,

Eric Carr

Thanks for the info. You filled in a lot of holes in my data. I too am a descendant of Colvin Carr, my grandfather. His son Floyd was my father. I have just started researching the family line and would be interested in any informtion you would like to share.

Hello Linda,

You are correct in your information, at least when compared to ours. However, you have added some new information for us; for instance, do you know where Solomon Carr died. We knew he died in an accident or something but we do not know where or when. There is no record of his death in Carleton County, to our knowledge.

As to his marriages, we were under the understanding that his wife, Elizabeth Price Murphy, was the one who had been married several times. She married a Foster in Monticello, Maine after Solomon died. We believe her first husband was a Kelly and she divorced him before marrying Solomon. We have no proof of the divorce and it is just family information.

We also felt that your ggrandfather's parents came from Ireland. We have never heard Scotland mentioned before in connection with this Carr family. We found the Ireland information on a birth certificate signed by Wilbert Ambrose Kelly, a half brother to the twins and Sandy.

I presume you already have the information we possess but if you would like to have our information, just e-mail me and I will get you a copy.

I'm hoping you can fill in a few blanks for us, particularly where Solomon4 died and was buried. That would certainly straighten out a lot of confusion for many families.

Kindest regards,

Eric Carr

Rebecca Carr was my great great grandmother. She married Robert Wallace in 1865 and they had 5 children. Was interested to see information on Soloman Carr.
