Hi there: I lived most of my life in Benton, New Brunswick. I now live in Nova Scotia but I might be of some help if you could tell me what you are looking for. I work for a genealogy company here and I am just starting to do my own research. My grandfather is a Hayes.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Kathy

Surnames: Mattatall, Hayes, DeMerchant
Kathy,
Wow - one of the names I'm looking for in Carleton is Hayes/Hays. Sure hope you can help! In the Carleton County Records I found this: July 14, 1842 Levi Mattatall married Mary Hays, both of Woodstock, in the Parish of Perth. They had 5 children. In both the 1851 and 1871 census returns Mary's mother, Margery Hayes is living in the household. Although Mary is no longer there in the 1871 census and I haven't found the 1861 census yet. One of Levi and Mary's daughters was my greatgrandmother and she died fairly young. Her 2nd marriage was to a William DeMerchant. Researching her has been the "brick wall" and so in frustration I began tracing the lives of all her siblings in hopes of finding more information, most especially where any of these people might be buried. I have found the eldest son, buried in Musquash, NB. Also found one sister buried in Houlton, ME and the youngest son was buried in Millinocket, ME. That leaves 2 missing plus Levi, Mary and Margery. The mention of Benton has come up frequently in the research. As to Hayes, I assume that Margery was a widow as she was living in her daughter's household and I've never found mention of her elsewhere nor what her husband's name might have been. The census' indicates Levi, Mary and Margery all emigrated to New Brunswick from Nova Scotia. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Stephanie

Surnames: BERRY, JAMES R.
Hello: Do you know of any BERRYs in Woodstock? I have been trying to find where JAMES R. BERRY was born & who his parents were. He is shown in the 1881 Canadian Census at Woodstock, Carleton, N.B. His twin brother, Reuben James Berry is shown in the same Census. I know James R. migrated to California & I have that info. but have not been able to find his parents or where these twins were born in 1849. JAMES marr. ANGELINA HANNAH DOREY from Nova Scotia but have not found their marriage. Two children are shown in the 1881 Census.

Thanks.

I've been researching Thomas McNally (also spelled McNelly) from Benton, NB. I have been to one of the cemetaries but didn't know there were more. Where would they be? Also, can you tell me who the parents were of Thomas? Last question - I found loads of info on Joseph McNally married to Rhoda Vaness (Veness). Is he the brother to Thomas? I know Thomas had a son Joseph married to Eliza Veness. Thanks for any help. My new email address is pperz@midmaine.com. Hope to hear from you soon.

I see your post was written a few years ago - but I am a great-granddaughter of Mary Demerchant, who was married to William and had two sons and grandchildren who lived (and still live) in Millinocket, ME.

I am interested in Mary Demerchant's origins - I have no further information on my grandfather's maternal side of the family.

Any help you can provide!

Hi there is a Demerchant Web Site and this might have some information on what you are looking for. It is managed by Norm DeMerchant now. Hope this helps.

Stephanie,

Its been sometime since you posted but just wondering who your great-grandmother was? I believe I am from the same line. My great-grandmother was Winnie (Winford, Winifred) Mattatall born in 1890 Lepreau, NB. Her father was George William born in Woodstock 1849 son of Levi abt 1815 in NS and died in Woodstock 1899?. I have death certificate for George - it states his father was Levi but the mother is unknown. I have come across the Mary Hays marriage to Levi and wonder if that was George's mother. Any info you have would be appreciated :) Thanks Lisa
