John Coffey & Mary Coughlan (Cofflin) Family

John Coffey & Mary Coughlan (Cofflin) Family

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 12:49PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Coffey, Coughlan, Cofflin
Cannot seem to locate the family of John & Mary Coffey on any census prior to 1891, when Mary appears as a Widow. They had 10 children before the 1861 census,
5 before the 1851 census, yet I cannot find them. Their marriage, the births of their children, and then the deaths/burials all center around Woodstock, Watson Settlement, Richmond Corner and Jacksontown. John born 1794 in Ireland, Mary 1818 in Ireland. The children are Catherine, John, Mary, Hannah, Francis, Jeremiah, Joseph, Ann, Sarah and George.
Any help would be appreciated.

In Richmond Parish, in 1861, John (60) and Mary (43) Coffee have John (18), Mary (16), Hannah (14), Francis (daughter, 12), Jeremiah (16), Joseph (8), 'Ann?' Jane (5), Elizabeth (3) and George W. (1).

Neat the way Mary became 10-years younger and Francis/Frances changed sex.

Mary (50) Coffee is a widow in 1871, in Richmond Parish, but managing to avoid any excessive aging. The family of siblings is headed by John (27) with Hannah (23), Francis (male again, 21), Jeremiah (19), Joseph (17), Ann J. (15), Sarah (13) and George W. (10).

In 1881, Francis (30) Coffee appears to have his own house in Richmond Parish and in the next are John (37), Mary (70), Sarah (23) and George W. (20) Coffee.

Mrs. John Coffee, "and old resident of Belleville", d. Hartford, NB 6DEC1895 and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock. This would probably be the Calvary Roman Catholic where also are buried:

Francis (Frank) Coffey (1849-1927), m. Rosella Kelly (1860-1951).
Mary Coffey d. 6DEC1895 age 86 years, "native of Co. Mayo, Ireland".
John Coffey b. 24DEC1843, d. 5NOV1913, m. Martha J. _____ (23JUN1843-5APR1907).

Or Old St Gertude's Roman Catholic, Carleton County"

John Coffey d. 5JUL1869 age 75 years, "native of Co. Cork, Ireland".

Francis' marriage record:
http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/VISSE/141B7.aspx?culture=en-CA...
gives his mother as Mary Coughlan. His death record:

gives her maiden name as Coughlin.

The search pattern I use can accommodate wildcards. For example, if I know a specific parish, I search for Cof* which will give Cofee, Coffee, Coffey, Coffin, Cofy, etc. Sometimes, if that doesn't work, I focus on an unusual forename with no surname or simply put in "John' or whatever, and wade through all John's in that parish.
