On Family Search, I found baptism records for Edward and Sarah (and others) that list the parents as John Cullen and Susan Hawke - links below, there may be more. I'll check a few other places and post again if something pops up.

Nancy

"Canada, Births and Baptisms, 1661-1959," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F2HM-R4J : accessed 09 Jun 2013), Susan Hawke in entry for Cullen, 02 May 1888.

"Canada, Births and Baptisms, 1661-1959," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FL51-G5N : accessed 09 Jun 2013), Susan Hawks in entry for Mary Ann Eliza , 23 Nov 1883.

"Canada, Births and Baptisms, 1661-1959," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FL51-R2Y : accessed 09 Jun 2013), Susan Hawks in entry for Edward Howard , 02 May 1888.

"New Brunswick, Provincial Returns of Births and Late Registrations, 1810-1906," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT3L-K2F : accessed 09 Jun 2013), Susan Hawks in entry for Sarah Ida Cullens, 1897.

Nothing yet, I plan to go there this summer. A company has purchased the land there and it requires permission to enter. Apparently, there was a real community there in 1861, when the NB Census shows several families. If you'd like to send me your e-mail, I'll let you know anything I find; must confess I don't often check this board. Have you looked at archivesgnb.ca ?

It would seem that the Henry J. Bennett of Hopewell is not the one you are looking for. He was born about 1840, was married to Henrietta Stiles, and did not die until after 1901. He was a shipbuilder and farmer, working with his shipbuilding father, Nathan M.Bennett.

The following item might be of interest:

Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 42 Number 457

Date September 13 1877
County Saint John
Place Saint John
Newspaper Daily News

The language of the text is the original used in the newspaper entry and as transcribed by Daniel F. Johnson. Records acquired by the Provincial Archives are not translated from the language in which they originate.

Capt. Henry BENNETT, the mate and three seamen of the bark "Ida J." of Saint John, N.B. which was abandoned at sea arrived here yesterday from St. Pierre, Miq. in the steamer "George Shattuck".

I'm looking for information on Henry Bennett, b. about 1825 d.1875-1891 at sea. He lived in the Maritime provinces and was a lumber ship captain.

I came across a record of a Henry J. Bennett residing in Hopewell, Albert County, New Brunswick. This was found through a document containing registered vessels. Henry J. Bennett was the sole registered owner of Bloomer built in 1856 in Gilbert's Cove, Nova Scotia, registered in Saint John, New Brunswick. How can I find more information about this ship and owner to determine if they are my ancestor?

In Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB in 1881, 'Alonza' (25) McFarlane had a wife, 'Alfareta?' (21) and a daughter, Jane (1).

The 'Armon' McFarland (16) in 1871 was the s/o Andrew (56, b. Ireland) and Margaret (41, b. NB) McFarland in Alm Parish in 1871. Siblings were Eliza Jane (26), Andrew (18), Patrick (9), King J. (7) and Mary J. (4).

The 1851 census of Harvey Parish, Albert Co., NB states that Margaret was also b. Ireland and arrived with Andrew and his parents:

McFarlaine Andrew M	Head	70	Irish 1833
McFarlaine Catherine	F	Wife 70	Irish 1833
McFarlaine Andrew M	Head	36	Irish 1833
McFarlaine Margaret F	Wife 22	Irish 1833
McFarlaine Eliza Jane	F	Daughter 5	Irish Birth
McFarlaine Samuel M	Son 4	Irish Birth
McFarlaine King M	Son 1	Irish Birth

In 1891, in Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB, is Alonzo McFarlane (38), with a wife, 'Alfetta' (33) and children J. Corey (11), Mary A. (9), Alonzo M. (7), Herbert J.? (D.?) (4), Lottie B. (4), John M. (3) and Norman B. (1). J. Corey is given as male but appears to have been the Jane in 1881. Also the 4-year old twins were given as twin daughters of Alonzo 'McFarlane' of Weldon, Albert Co., NB b. 25DEC1886 in a newspaper announcement.
Next door, in 1891, in a separate household, are Catherine McFarlane (52) and Mariah (21). Catherine was b. Ireland and is a widow. Mariah is her daughter. In Hillsborough Parish, in 1881, Catherine McFarlane (49) was a widow, Irish but b. NB, with daughters Mariah (12), Maggie (22) and Cassie (20). I would think that b. ca. 1832 more represents Catherine's birth-date than b. ca. 1839 in 1891. She is a bit tricky to find in 1871 as the surname has been transcribed as 'Meforling'. It is actually 'Mcforling'. She was 45 in Coverdale Parish (ca. 1826) Irish and b. NB. With dates of birth ranging from 1826 to 1839, it also makes her a bit tricky to identify. Children are Catherine (14), 'Olonzo' (12), Mary M. (10) and Maria A. (3). 'Olonzo' b. ca. 1859 I assume is Alonzo b. ca. 1853-6, so his date-of-birth is also pretty variable.
Catharine McFarlane, in Hillsborough Parish in 1901, was b. 20MAR1826.
A couple of pages further off in 1901 is 'Correy' McFarlane (15NOV1880) who now seems definitely male as he is married and has a daughter. Later he is Corey James MacFarlane. Two households from him is Alonzo and Alfretta with a very large family:

McFarlane Alonzo	M	Head	M	Feb 3	1855
McFarlane Alfretta	F	Wife M	Aug 14	1858
McFarlane Murdock	M	Son S	Sep 3	1882
McFarlane Herbet	M	Son S	Aug 25	1884
McFarlane Lottie	F	Daughter	S	Dec 25	1886
McFarlane John	M	Son S	Apr 20	1888
McFarlane Norman	M	Son S	May 21	1890
McFarlane Jessie	F	Daughter	S	Feb 4	1892
McFarlane Jennie	F	Daughter	S	Sep 12	1893
McFarlane Fannie	F	Daughter	S	May 18	1885
McFarlane Charles	M	Son S	Aug 23	1896
McFarlane Percival	M	Son S	Apr 19	1898
McFarlane George	M	Son S	May 2	1899
McFarlane Merreta	F	Daughter	S	Sep 10	1900

Lottie b. 25DEC1886 certainly appears to have been one of the twin daughters but 'Herbet' (b. 25AUG1884) appears not to have been that twin. John b. 20APR1888 was, by a birth record, b. Hillsborough Parish 21APR1888. A daughter not in the 1901 census was Dora Louisa McFarlane b. Weldon, Albert Co., NB 12SEP1902. Her father, 'Lonzo' was given as b. Dover, NB. Her mother, 'Alphretta' Hoar, was b. Weldon. This was attested to by her sister-in-law, Mabel McFarlane (b. ca. 1883) of Calgary, Alberta in 1958.
As Alonzo MacFarlane, in other birth records, he was b. Weldon, Albert Co., NB. At least so Lottie Martin claimed when supporting her brothers, Herbert 'Engrhmn?' when he registered his birth.

In 1881 above, Catherine McFarlane had a daughter, Maggie, b. ca. 1859. This may also be Mary M. (ca. 1861) in 1871. I think Maggie is Margaret MacFarlane b. Coverdale Parish, Albert Co., NB 2AUG1857, d/o James and Catherine (Pagan) MacFarlane. She registered her birth in 1927 and stated that James was also b. Dover ca. 1831. Her mother she gave as Irish and b. Coverdale Parish ca. 1833. James was a seaman and 'Scotch'. Margaret was also likely the Margaret MacFarlane who m. John Pharis Edgett. Another Margaret MacFarlane m. Enoch Sydney Hopper. In Dawson Settlement was a 3rd Margaret Etta MacFarlane who m. Hiram Watson Steeves.

Dover appears to be in Dorchester Parish, Westmorland Co., NB. In 1866 there were 60 families, including 9 McFarlane families. In the 1865 directory there were:

McFarlane, Arthur	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, Belford	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, Bent	-	Dover	Westmorland	Mariner
McFarlane, Charles	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, John	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, John A.	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, Ralph	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, T.	- Dover	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlane, William	-	Dover	Westmorland	Farmer

In the 1871 directory there were:

McFarlin, Bedford	Dover	Dorchester	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlin, Bent Dover	Dorchester	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlin, Charles	Dover	Dorchester	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlin, Job Dover	Dorchester	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlin, John Dover	Dorchester	Westmorland	Farmer
McFarlin, John A. Charles McFarlin lived a bit further off but I would suspect that Charles, Alexander, James, Joseph and William were all related, likely brothers. What is peculiar is that the same enumerator was not consistent in his spelling even in families next to each other.
Since James (33) is married and since his children do not seem to be Catherine's in later census returns, I would suspect that James (24), s/o Charles and Mary, was the one who may have married Catherine Pagan. There were 35 McFarlan's and 11 McFarlin's in Dorchester Parish in 1851.

The New Brunswick Genealogical Society has a web site, "First Families", part of which is at:
http://nbgs.automatedgenealogy.com/firstfamilies/FAMILY-McA-...
This includes:

MACFARLANE: Robert MacFarlane born c1767 in Aberdeen?, Scotland, died 23 Feb 1851: he came to NB and settled at Dover in Dorchester Parish, Westmorland County:
m. Johnson’s New Brunswick lineages, pages 3, 177- 178: see MC80/1790 Ken Kanner’s Early families revisited, page 181: see also MC618 Moncton genealogies collection, MS13 Stephen Rodgers and Rachel McFarlane Rodgers and family, 1 page.

So far, my guess is that Alonzo MacFarlane was a s/o James and Catherine (Pagan) MacFarlane where James was the s/o Alexander and Mary (Steeves) MacFarlane and Alexander was a s/o Robert and Margaret (Beatty) MacFarlane. I am concerned about Catherine's maiden name. It was not unknown in NB but is so rare that I feel the spelling is not 'Pagan'. Rather, I suspect that she was the Catherine Fagan age 22, lodging with William and Almira Robertson in Moncton Parish, Westmorland Co., NB in 1851, a servant. The name seems spelled at times as 'Phagen'. There were a number of Fagan's in Westmorland Co. but I would look closely at the family in Coverdale Parish, in Albert Co., where Catherine is supposed to have been born:

Fagan Patrick M	Head 61	Irish	Labourer	Aug 1817
Fagan Olive F	Wife 55 Birth
Fagan Mary O F	Daughter 18 Birth
Fagan Rebecca	F	Daughter 13 Birth
Fagan Eliza A F	Granddaughter 3 Birth

Some of my speculation is supported by conclusions at:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
See also:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~coleharbou...
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72...

Thomas.

Is it possible that the name he used changed as he got older? I have seen this happen several times where the first name was used and later the second. I note that there was an "Armour McFarlane", age 6, in the 1861 Census in Alma, Albert County.

Hi Mike. I am related to the Godfrey family. I am actually working on the Hawkes family tree in which the Godrfey's are part of. Willis Andrew Godfrey was born 2 Jan 1919 his wife Margaret Steeves, comes from one of the first families to settle in New Brunswick.

The Hawkes family have a lot of people who belonged to the Mason's. Willis father was Marvin Daniel Godfrey.

You may want to get a hold of the neartest masonic lodge to see if they have a record for either of these men who may have belonged to their lodge/temple.

If you'd like to e-mail me a pic of the sword, please feel free to do so at my above e-mail. Rather than using this site.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Rebecca Ryan was a daughter of William Ryan, according to some family lore. She married John Ward and had a daughter named Mary Ann Ward, who married Robert Keillor.
William Ryan is the son of Daniel Ryan and Ann Henry. If you look up www.nbgs.ca/firstfamilies/ you'll see some info on Daniel Ryan and Ann Henry.
They are also named in the Chignecto Isthmus and Its first Settlers by H. Truman, which can be read online.

Hi My name is Jeremie,

While I'm not teaching I like to spend some time to explore the forest for things long forgotten :)

Last year I've started working on a project to document some of the overgrown cemeteries in the Province. Trough this site and from my travels I've gathered a fair bit of information and I've begun photographing some of the cemeteries. I'm hoping to put that information online at some point when time allows it. My project suffered a setback last summer when my grandma died. At that time it was to painful to go cemetery hunting.

I'm hoping in the spring to start documenting some of these old overgrown cemeteries again :)

At the moment I'm gathering data and starting to plan out some trips :)

If you have some information on an overgrown abandoned cemetery in the area I would love to here about it :)

I can be reached at jeremielandry@rogers.com
Hello Carol,
I came across your post while looking for info on William O'Neal also. I am a descendant by way of his daughter Nancy. Nancy married a James O'Shaughnessy/Shaughnessy. Their daughter Catherine/Kate married Harry D. Steeves. His father was William, grandfather was Allan, great-grandfather was Matthias Steeves. Harry, Catherine and their children immigrated to Bridgeport, CT. Their daughter Margaret Mae Steeves Whaley is my grand mother. This makes William my great-great-great grandfather!!!!
When researching William in Canada you will find his last name spelled O'Neill or O'Neil
This is all I have so far. Hope it helps.
shelly
Ae 19- and they have 2 children: Alfred ae 3 and William ae 1 - Section lists Hans as Danish - and I remember hearing that there were a number of Danish who originally settled in Hillsborough county and I am not sure where you might find that info Maybe the Albert County Museum - anyway my understanding is that many left and came out West once the lands were open - Many settled west of Red Deer in the Markerville/Dixon Alberta area - you might want to read the following link and perhaps it could give you some further clues - http://culture.alberta.ca/heritage/resourcemanagement/histor...
hip/heritagesurvey/pdf/Markerville.pdf

I have an Augusta Jonah dau of Benjamin Jonah and Susan Lutz - I don't have Marriage or other date or name od spouse but this might help in various census research Can't find my 1891 census of Albert county - but the Jonah family is in the
1871 census Here is a link to Agusta
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M4M6-WB2 Even though not listed here they were Parents Benjamin, Susan Children: Eleanor, Catharine, Havelock, Mary A, William, Augsta, and Maud In 1901.
Re: Larsen Hans Frederick, origine

HANSON (HANS) FREDERICK LARSEN b. Denmark 20FEB1854 (ca. 1852-3, FEB1853 in 1911), m. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB 29JUL1877 AUGUSTA (ANNE) ROSE JONAH (b. NB 30JAN1862 (ca. 1862, JAN1862 in 1911), d. Bridgedale, Coverdale Parish, Albert Co., NB 1MAR1954 age 92 years, 1 month and 1 day), d/o Henry and Elizabeth (Wilson) Jonah.
In the 1881 census of Hillsborough Paris, Hanson (29) and Augusta (19) JLarsen have children: Alfred (3) and William (1). He is a Dane and she is a 'Sweed' but I believe that may not be correct. Next door were Henry John (59) and his wife, Elizabeth (58) Jonah whom I assume were Augusta's parents. Henry is Swiss and Elizabeth is German and both were b. NB. Augusta, although b. NB, likely was intended to be Swiss as well. On the other hand, In Hillsborough Parish in 1871, Augusta (9) was the daughter of Henry (48) and Elizabeth (47) Jonah, but all were b. NB and German.
Something of the Jonah family is at the New Brunswick Genealogical Society, "First Families", web site at:
http://www.nbgs.ca/firstfamilies/FAMILY-J-2006.pdf
suggests that Elizabeth may actually have been English and that the Jonah family around for some time, originating in France. Refernce is made to several works including Eleanor Goggin’s, "The Jonah family from Montbeliard to Hillsborough 1752-1775".
In the 1891 census of Hillsborough Parish they are Hans (38) and Augusta (32) Larsen. Considering the 1871 and 1881 censuses, I have to assume that Augusta was closer to 29 years-of-age rather than 32. Children were Roy A. (13), William H. (11), Annie E. (9), Whitney (6) and Frederick H. (4).
Hans F. and Augusta Larsen were in Hillsborough Parish in 1901. birth-dates in 1901 are generally unreliable but that is the source for several such dates here. Hans, for example, judging by the various census returns, including 1911, was most likely born 20FEB1853. Otherwise, the dates in 1901 generally seem close. Roy's matches his birth record for example. Augusta's birth-date in 1901 matches that on her death registration.
One of their daughter married Ronald Smith.
Roy Alfred' death registration states that his father, Hans Larsen, was born in Denmark. This seems probable. It also means that he was Lars' son, or his father was Lars.
See also:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~coleharbou...

Children:
1. ROY ALFRED (ALFRED ROY) LARSEN b. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB 28FEB1878 (ca. 1878, APR1876 in 1911), d. Hospital, Moncton, Westmorland Co., NB 27AUG1851 age 73 years, 5 months and 21 days, m. Albert Co., NB 24DEC1902 IRENE (JANE) TRENHOLM (b. DEC1877).
2. WILLIAM HANS LARSEN b. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB 28NOV1879 (ca. 1880, NOV1879 in 1911), m. Albert Co., NB 6APR1901 EFFIE GEORGIANA PARKER (b. AUG1879).
3. ANNIE ELIZABETH LARSEN b. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB 15FEB1882 (ca. 1882), m. Albert Co., NB 15FEB1910 DAVID FRANKLIN ORAM..
4. KARL WHITNEY LARSEN b. 2JUL1884 (ca. 1885).
5. FREDERICK HENRY LARSEN b. ca. 1887.
6. MINNIE LARSEN b. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB 23AUG1889, d. Albert Co., NB 1890.
7. MABEL CORA LARSEN b. 28DEC1891 (DEC1892 in 1911).
8. GORDON HORACE LARSEN b. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB 29NOV1894 (OCT1894 in 1911), m. Andover, Victoria Co., NB 7FEB1917 LULU H. WHITE.
9. ARCHIE LARSEN b. 26APR1896 (APR1897 in 1911).
J. VIOLA LARSEN b. APR1900.
K. ALICE LARSEN b. DEC1902.

Bill, I'm not sure if your question was of me or Albert. My great great grandfather John Samuel McAllister married Catherine, a daughter of John and Mary (McShary) McCarron. They moved to the US after having two or three children. John and Catherine had had Charles McAllister in 1854 in that area and Elizabeth Ann in 1856 and possibly James Walter but I"ve no info on James Walter. What I've not been able to find is any information on when John Samuel came to New Brunswick/Nova Scotia from Ireland or if his family came as well. No records so far to connect John S. McAllister to anyone in the Hopewell or Joggins area for sure.

Hi I am not sure what year George was born in. I am of the believe that he and my g,g,g grandfather are related. I am thinking that they both maybe sons of Thomas Briggs.

Yes I have only come across the name of Mark Briggs once, the 1851 census as living with another family was a pauper, but no other info.

These are just some of the roadblocks I have encountered the 12 yrs or more researching my family. I have gotten as far as John. I believe that Thomas Briggs is either his father or grandfather.

I have a 4 generation descendant report for Thomas Kinne's family. They lived in New Brunswick and Maine. I have sourced this data from Canadian and US Census records as well as documents from Milburn Family newsletters and Canadian & Maine history books. I can provide all sources if you think you tie into this family. This list won't let me attach a pdf, so if you would like a copy please email me.

midwestancestree@gmail.com

midwestancestree.blogspot.com
