THELMA FLORA SMITH (b. Albert Mines, Albert Co., NB 2DEC1910), was the daughter of Fred Smith and of Annie Keddy. Thelma married 1st Major JOHN WILLIAM TRUIN LOCKWOOD (b. Sandy, Bedfordshire, England 5OCT1877, d. Moncton Hospital Annex, Moncton, Moncton Parish, Westmorland Co., NB 2MAR1961 age 83 years, 4 months and 25 days, buried Shediac Road Cemetery, Moncton, Westmorland Co., NB), s/o James Truin and Helen (Seaton?) Lockwood; m. 2nd Immaculate Heart Church, Riverview, Coverdale Parish, Albert Co., NB 7SEP1963 GEORGE MICHAEL McINTYRE (b. Kouchibouguac, Kent Co., NB 14JUL1898 (14JUL1897 in WWI attestation form in 1916 but he may have lied); m. 1st _____), s/o Robert and Mary Grace (Mazerolle) McIntyre.
Annie, Thelmas' mother, may have been Annie Smith (b. OCT1890), living with her mother-in-law, Susan Smith (MAR1850) with a daughter, 'Wilma' Smith (DEC1910). looking at the image, which is a bit faded, the transcriber has, for example, 'Milton' for 'Mitton' and I am fairly sure that 'Wilma' should be Thelma. Birth Records for children of Frederick (Fred) William Smith and Annie Mildred Keddy include:
daughter b. Albert Mines, Albert Co., NB 2DEC1910
Hazel dorothy Smith b. Albert Mines, Albert Co., NB 23APR1913
Donald William Smith b. Albert Mines, Albert Co., NB 12JUL1915
Allison Wentworth Smith b. Albert Mines, Albert Co., NB 9JAN1918
The un-named daughter I assume was Thelma. Fred was b. Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB and Annie was b. New Ross, Lunenburg Co., NS. Hazel Dorothy Steeves lived in Surrey, British Columbia in 1878; possibly in Steveston?, named after the Steeves' family from NB.
Fred (28JAN1887-14JUL1933) died in Albert Mines, Hillsborough Parish, Albert Co., NB age 46 years and 6 months. His parents, according to Annie, were William and Susan (Wilson) Smith. Another son of William and Susan was Jordan Smith b. Coverdale Parish, Albert Co. 10MAR1878. William (25APR1848) and Susan (11MAY1860) Smith lived in Hillsborough Parish in 1901 with, amongst their children, 'Jordon' (10MAR1878) and Frederick (28JAN1887). Next door were one of many Steeves' families. Note that Jordan's date-of-birth actually matches that of his birth record and that Frederick's matches that on his death registration. This is unusual for the 1901 census which usually has guesses more than accuracy. The Mitton's are, again, given as 'Milton'. Presumably the birth-date for William is accurate as well. There is the discrepancy in Susan's birth-dates and I think 1855-6 is more likely. In 1891 she was b. ca. 1856, which does not help, and I rather suspect that she was Susannah Wilson (b. ca. 1856) d/o Alexander (ca. 1834) and Sarah A. (ca. 1848) Wilson in the 1871 census of Coverdale Parish. There were a number of William Smith's in Albert Co. in 1871, but the most likely is William Smith (b. ca. 1847), s/o Joseph (ca. 1823) and Sarah (ca. 1828) Smith in Hillsborough Parish. There was also Susan Wilson (ca. 1857), d/o Munroe (ca. 1825) and Ann (ca. 1821) Smith in Elgin Parish in 1861, but this seems unlikely. If I am right about William, then his family was in Coverdale Parish in 1851 as:
Smith Joseph M Head 27 Irish Labourer Birth
Smith Sarah F Wife 23 German Birth
Smith William M Son 5 Birth
Smith Mary F Daughter 3 Birth
Smith Nancy F Daughter 8 mos Birth
The location and that Sarah was 'german' suggests that she was a Steeves or Lutz/Lutes.
I cannot see an immediate marriage for Thelma to a Lockwood. However, Thelma's son, John Kingsford Lockwood (b. Westmorland Co., NB) gave his parents as John William Lockwood (b. Sandy, Bedfordshire, England) and Thelma Smith, when he married Beatrice Lillian Greening. Another son was Joseph James Lockwood (b. Moncton) was in the Royal Canadian Air Force when he married Marie Annette Breau.
Major John William Truin Lockwood had been a salesman and the doorman at the Canadian (Legislative? or Legate?) Building. His headstone states that he had been a private in the Imperial Yeomanry. This raise the question as to whether 'Major' was a rank or his first name. I think he may also have been a sergeant major. The Imperial Yeomanry was a volunteer, mounted infantry group of units mainly active in the Boer War.
Assuming that Annie Mildred Keddy was b. New Ross, Lunenburg Co., NS sometime around OCT1890 then she is likely the Annie Keddy in New Ross in 1901, b. 24OCT1891, d/o Urias (2MAR1863) and Emma (11DEC1868) Keddy. Urias Keddy m. Emma A. McDow 22JAN1885. He was the s/o Isaac and Cath. Keddy and she the d/o Wm and Elizth McDow. Urias Keddy (2MAR1862-9NOV1852) was the husband of Emma Odelia Keddy, and the s/o Isaac and Catherine (Legge) Keddy. Note the one-year discrepancy in birth-dates. This was a feature of the 1901 census in which the enumerator asked for the birthday and the age at the next birthday from which the year-of-birth was calculated. This was almost guaranteed to produce one-year errors. This, for example, Annie was more likely b. 24OCT1890 which matches the 1911 census. Emma O. Keddy (11DEC1868-27SEP1927) was the d/o Samuel and Mary Ann (Legge) McDow.
