I have a very interesting story of John Garland. I too am related to him. Family legend passed down, says he stowed away on a ship of his uncles. More to the story, but that is how he ended up in Canada.
|
What was the name of the ship? What were the brother's names? The John Garland that I am looking for was born 1766 in London. Married Sarah Ayles. Son John Jr was my grandmothers greatgrandfather. David was her grandfather and Manford Newcomb was her father. All from the Elgin/Albert area. Do you know of any photos, portraits, birth certificates, death certificates or marriage certificates of family and where I can find them?

Same John. John Garland, Jr was also my grandmother's greatgrandfather as well. Her Grandfather was Stephen, brother to your grandmothers grandfather David. John Jr was married to a Rachael Berry. He is buried in the Hillside Baptist church cemetary. I do not know much about her. My grandmother believes she was of Irish descent. As to birth and death certificates, there were none. My grandmother Ruby Garland was born 1911 in Elgin and she does not have one for herself. She is the daughter of Perley Stephen Garland, Stephen Garland and Emma Copp's son. As to the ship, I do not have that name either. The Capt was John's uncle by the name of Brooks. I have an old clipping explaining how John Garland Sr. got stranded here when he was only 13. He was the son of a wealthy Butcher from London.

The 1851 census lists John Garland and Rachael as well as their 10 children and all their ages. You and I are 5th cousins. You may find some information on a marriage register in Albert Co., New Brunswick. John Garland Jr. may have had a sister named Nell who married a True and lived in Frederickson.
|
I also am related to this John Garland and also through John Jr and Rachel.
My ggrandfather, William was a brother to Stephen as was my gggrandfather, Moses.
William and Stephen are both buried in the Hillside Cemetery as well as several other members of the Garland family.
If memory serves me correctly at least one of Nell True's children is also buried in Hillside. Nell and her husband moved to the Fredericton area and are buried in Lincoln across from the Fredericton airport.

Hi barb, I am kind of confused regarding William & Moses. Were they brothers? Also did Nell and John Garland Sr., have another sister by the name of Jane Garland Steeves as well as brother William? Does anybody have a full list of siblings? By the way, John Garland Sr. was the eldest son of a John Garland from London, making John Garland (married to Sara Ayles) Jr., and John Garland (married to Rachael Berry) the first.
