Brandon Sun - Lookup Request

Hello! Is there anyone who could look up a couple of items for me in the Brandon Sun?

1) Obituary for Ruth Brenda King (nee Lindley) published (I think) in the Brandon Sun on April 17, 1973.

2) Obituary for John Murray Lindley published in the Brandon Sun on April 3, 1990.

Thanks in advance!

I looked through a number of editions of the Brandon Sun in the Ancestry database for an obituary for Ruth and came up empty. The Sun had surprisingly few obituaries published - a number of days there were only one or two.

Unfortunately the database only went to 1977 so nothing on John.

Thanks for trying. I have this tantalizing hint that comes up when I do a google search on the mother, Emily Lindley Selbie.

It's from the myheritage.com website (for which one needs a paid membership) but it says

Explore historical records and family tree profiles about Emily Selbie on MyHeritage, the ... Lindley in Left to mourn are her husband Jim King her mother Emily Selbie her three Muriel ... The Brandon Sun - Brandon, Manitoba - Apr 17 1973. ".

I know that Ruth Lindley married a Jim King and her mother was Emily Selbie. So it appears this hint is about her.

I realized that the Brandon Sun was on Ancestry for that year just a few minutes before I read your message, lol, so have been scrolling through every page for that date in case it was an article instead of an obit. But you're right. Nothing. I also tried the burial index for Brandon Municipal Cemetery but she doesn't show up there either.

I think the site may have taken bits and pieces of various entries and jumbled them together for that blurb. I googled the phrase "Left to mourn are her husband Jim King her mother Emily Selbie" and one of the hits was to the Brandon Sun dated 2 Sep 1989 at the Newspaper Archives website. Unfortunately that's a pay site so I couldn't see if it was her obituary there. The only other hit was to the MyHeritage site.

But it is your lucky day because the obituary was also published in the Winnipeg Free Press on 2 Sep 1989. I see from reading it that Ruth and Jim King had moved to Winnipeg.

Is John Murray Lindley the father of Ruth? If so, from looking at Ruth's obituary it says her father died in 1954. I don't see any other men named John in her obit.

I found these in the Brandon Sun:

Ruth's engagement notice from 8 May 1964
Ruth's wedding write-up from 18 Jun 1964

Thank you Jacquie! Once again you have REALLY come through for me! Even a picture! :)

We seem to be thinking along the same lines - I used different search parameters and found the 1989 Brandon Sun reference too - again just before I read your message, lol.

Anyway, when I entered 1989 as the year of death, a Find A Grave reference popped up.

Regarding John Murray Lindley - he appears to have been her brother. He is referenced in the obit as "Murray".

How are you finding these things in the Winnipeg Free Press if not through a paid site? I have used the Winnipeg Free Press Passages but it only goes back to 1999. The Ancestry database is incomplete and only goes to 1977.

So am I! Thank you again.

Newspaperarchives.com used to allow one free view per day. So I could usually find what I wanted by myself, although it would take a few days. But unfortunately they seem to have stopped that practice. And I wouldn't use it enough to justify the paid subscription.
