I'm trying to find out more information about my ancestor Frederick Arthur Sherwood.

He was born in 1884 in Kinson, Dorset, England to William & Fanny Louisa Sherwood (nee Ball). He would have gone to Canada in about 1910.

I've managed to find his record from the 1st World War to say that he joined up in 1915, he was living in 734 Livinia Venue, Winnipeg at the time of joining and was married to Elizabeth Sherwood.

I would love to find out more information, but I'm struggling to find anything more. I would especially like to know if I have any relations still living in Canada.

Any help that anyone could give me in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Kelly

Frederick’s marriage is listed in the online index for Manitoba Vital Statistics.
He married Clara Elizabeth FRANCIS on 2 Aug 1913 in Winnipeg. Their marriage registration can be ordered for $12.00 by printing the order form on the website and either mailing or faxing it:

Frederick died 8 March 1956 and he’s buried in the military section of Brookside Cemetery. There’s an index here:
http://www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/cemetery_brookside_alpha.stm

Brookside is a large cemetery – about 10,000 military burials and about 100,000 burials in total. I don’t see his wife listed.

Knowing his death date maybe someone can find an obituary for you.

At the time of the 1916 census Clara E. SHERWOOD was living at 317 Beverly and they had a daughter May M. age 2. Frederick is listed on active service overseas. His immigration year is 1910 and his occupation is carpenter.

There was a Fred SHERWOOD who arrived in Quebec from Liverpool on 14 July 1910 on the Victorian. He was age 26, labourer, destination Winnipeg. It looks like it says “To brother builder.”

Rev H Gordon Walker officiating. Burial will be in the military plot Brookside cemetery."
Winnipeg Free Press 1956 Friday March 09 p. 11

1916 census has Fredric A and Clara E Sherwood with daughter May M age 2 at 317 Beverly, Winnipeg.

There is a death for a Clara Elizabeth Sherwood, age 97,
died 8th Jan 1982 at North Vancouver, British Columbia.
1982 - 97 = 1885 which is birth year given for Clara E in the 1916 census.

As a last resort I always check British Columbia Vital Statistics because so many people retired from Manitoba to that more temperate climate.

Dear pinestick,
I have come across your postings on another page regarding the onetime mayor of Winnipeg in 1917. Your posting(s) were early last year if you remember. I am interested in learning more about this person and his decendants so i amusing this Sherwood site page as a more direct means of contacting you. I hope it works as we appear to have a common interest here.
Regards,
Jeffrey

Hi, I hope you are still on this site. He was my grandfather. My mother was Doreen Francis Sherwood. Yes, lots of us are in Canada: my brother, and several cousins and their kids and grandkids in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Yukon.
