Patterson Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
I was wondering if someone could give me a very brief description/history of the Patterson cemetery in the R.M. of Oakland.
My great aunt Agnes DALGLIESH PATTERSON (daughter of James DALGIESH and Agnes LIND) and her husband THOMAS J. PATTERSON lived in the R.M. of OAKLAND, and I was wondering if the cemetery if it is possible that they were buried there.
Thanks

Re: PATTERSON Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
Hi
I'm confused as to what/where the cemetery office would be. Would it be part of the R.M office or another organization?

Re: PATTERSON Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
Hi Leyta, there is no onsite cemetery office. This is a "family" cemetery and very small. Unfortunately when I was there in 1999, I didn't photograph all the headstones. The days before I owned a digital camera.
I have two connections to your query.
My gg grandaunt Mary Edith Sanderson married Alexander Dalgliesh. Alexander was an older brother of Agnes Dalgliesh.
My gg granduncle Andrew Minary married Martha Ann Patterson. Martha Ann was the next child after Thomas James Patterson.
I was visiting there just after the 100th anniversary of the Minary farm which is near the cemetery. Andrew Minary knew the Pattersons from Mono township in Ontario and went West to help harvest crops at the Patterson farm. He ended up marrying William Patterson & Jane Orr's daughter and stayed near the Pattersons in the West. As far as I know, William and Jane are the two original couple and the cemetery is named after their family.
If the Minary farm was 100 years in 1999, that would make the Patterson farm older, as they were there before Andrew. Denny Minary did take me for a tour of the farms and the local area. It is a wonderful spot.

Re: PATTERSON Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
Thanks for the information, it's helpful and gives me a better idea of the Patterson family.
My grandfather was John DALGLIESH, one of Alexander and Agnes's younger brothers.
My information is that Alexander and Mary Edith had three children, Harvey, Leslie and Doreen and raised their family in Ontario.
My understanding is that Thomas and Agnes PATTERSON's children were Zeta May, William Gordon, Jane Gertie, James Osborne and Evelyn.
Any idea if this is correct?
Again, thanks for the information and explanation regarding the cemetery and Patterson and Minary farms.

Re: PATTERSON Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
You are correct about Alexander and Mary Edith, they had the three children you mentioned and they did live in Ontario. Harvey 1916-1995, Leslie 1917-1991, Dorren 1923-2004. When I was visiting the Minary family in 1999, I also made it to Froude, Weyburn, Ralph and Goodwater. Edith's brother James Sanderson had the general store in Goodwater and I believe that might have been the general area that Alexander and Edith met. They lived in Orangeville and that is where Alexander, Edith and Harvey are buried, in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Orangeville was the Sanderson's home town for that generation.
As for Thomas James and Agnes, I have the same famiy names as you. I got the names from the 1906 census. I believe we have a Patterson family tree in the Dufferin county archives. I will be there Saturday and I can check if there are any more details.
I have Thomas James Oct 11, 1872 - 1954 and Agnes 1874-1947 but no burial location.

Re: PATTERSON Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
Thanks for this information about Edith's brother James. It makes sense that Alexander and Eight would meet through visiting their siblings.
My grandfather John DALGLIESH, as well as his brothers Irv, Frank and Dave all settled around the Weyburn area. My grandfather farmed south of Weyburn.
It also helps me understand why my mom and aunts seemed to personally know "Uncle Sandy" even though he lived in Orangeville, Ontario.
I appreciate you filling me in on this information. Thanks

Re: PATTERSON Cemetery, Oakland, Manitoba
Alexander and Mary Edith's daughter was named Elma Doreen and went by Doreen. My husband, David, is her son.
Harvey, Leslie and Doreen were raised in Orangeville, Ontario and raised their children there.
