I am connected to the ROBSON family, which originated in Eckford, Roxburghshire, Scotland and emigrated to Chinguacousy Twp., Peel Co., Ont. in 1837. One son, Thomas, married Janet Gibson SPEIRS of Chinguacousy in 1838. Their second son was John Speirs ROBSON, b. Feb. 5 1843. He married Agnes (WYLIE?) in Caledon Twp., Peel Co. on May 1 1876. They had a son, Thomas Wylie ROBSON, b. Feb. 6 1878 in Stayner, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe Co. John, Agness and Thomas show up in the 1901 census of Pembina District, residing at Sec. 2/3-3-9-W1.

Does anyone know anything about this family? My best guess is that they lived a few miles south of Manitou.

David,
The book "In Rhythm with our Roots: A History of Manitou and Area" (1997) contains some information about the Robson family. The book is 825 pages long and has no index, but from a quick scan I found the following:

p. 14-15: a map, dated 1 May 1874, shows J.S. Robson on NE2-3-9, SE2-3-9, SW2-3-9, and S1/2 SW3-3-9.

p. 66: A listing from the Manitou Cemetery includes Robson, Angela, 1943; Robson, George Alexander, 1972; Robson, John S. (no date); Robson, John Speirs, 1904; Robson, Mary Sharpe, 1961; Robson, Thos. W., 1949.

p.306: An entry too long to quote says John Robson was born in 1842, came to Manitou from Stayner, ON with his wife in 1881, and died in 1904. Says Mary Sharpe was Tom Robson's wife. Contains further info about homes built by the Robsons in Manitou - photos of these houses are on pages 808 and 809.

Hope this helps. Email me if you want more details.

Ken

The information that I have concerns Janet Gibson Speirs , she was born Aug. 14,1821 at Mill O. Gryfe, Bridge of Weir Scotland. Her parents were Patrick and Mary (Ritchie) Speirs who were married at the residence of the bride Ward End, Kilbarchan Scotland June 20, 1809. She married Thomas Robson and had 2 sons and 2 daughters. After Thomas died she married Hugh Craig.

Hi Donna -

Your information about Janet Gibson SPEIRS corresponds to what I have, which I got from Jim McKane's family tree on the Rootsweb Worldconnect website. If you are interested, I have a copy of the gravestone transcriptions from the Mayfield United Church cemetery, where Patrick and Mary (RITCHIE) SPEIRS and a number of other SPEIRSes are buried, and I can give you whatever information there is on them that you may want.

I have seen the church record of the marriage of Janet and Thomas ROBSON on April 17 1838 in Chinguacousy. The minister was Rev. Leach of Toronto, and the witnesses were James ARCHER & Adam SPEIRS. I have information on three of their children:

Thomas ROBSON - b. abt. 1838, m. (1) Elizabeth WHITE in Chinguacousy Mar. 28 1859, and after she died, her sister (2) Sarah WHITE on Feb. 8 1866 in York County, d. Oct. 19 1913 in Shelburne, had at least 8 children

John Speirs ROBSON - b. abt. 1843-1844, m. Agnes McGREGOR in Caledon May 1 1876, had at least 2 children

Jane ROBSON - b. abt. 1848, m. William ROBINSON in Chinguacousy Dec. 10 1863, d. before Sept. 1899 (when William married her cousin Maria ROBSON), had at least 2 of her own children and adopted 2 more

I don't know anything about Thomas & Janet's second daughter. Do you have any information about her?

David

The other daughter is Mary Ritchie Robson, as mentioned in her father Thomas Robson's will in June 1847.

Dear Mr. Thomas,

My family were neighbours to the Robsons in Peel County, as well as in Simcoe County where Mr. J.S. Robson lived before pioneering in Manitoba. In the Pembina-Manitou district my great grandparents were friends and neighbours to the Robsons and I can remember the widow of Mr. Thomas Wylie Robson born 1878.

I have some information in my files that might be of interest.

Dear Felix - we own the property formerly owned by James Robson (Son of Thomas Robson of Scotland) on conc 5 chingucaousy (peel) I am researching it. I have some information and would love to learn anything about the property.
Any family photos of the Robsons would be amazing, and anything showing the house on our property! I would also be happy to take a photo of the spot where the house was - you can still see the shape of the land where the foundation was. I would love to hear any family history, particularly relating to the property. Lucydelaat at aol dot com. Thanks!
