I see from your posting history that others have given you appropriate links for you to explore for ww1 soldiers, Barnardoes children, etc.

So, who are you looking for? What do you know about him?

Hi. My quest is for as much knowledge as is available on ROBERT JOHN MAHONEY a Dr. Barnardoes youth who went to Canada in 1904. I/We have his history sheets from the Barnardoes organisation that show he went to Home Farm in Russell Manitoba, and eventually worked various holdings in that area. We would like to trace any possible photos of the time that may portray him, to learn how things would have been for him, just anything from which we can build a picture that would transcribe into words. IE--How would he have got from Quebec to Russell, how long would it have took, he was one of how many?. So you see a series of general questions really. I/We have his Army Service Papers and feel that the Army side of things are complete---unless there is a monument in Russell perhaps that shows his name. We have visited his grave in France. You may E Mail me if you wish GEODONOVAN@HOTMAIL.COM Regards Harry

Hello Harry,

You are asking very interesting questions raised by many others who have Barnardo Home connections. As I manage many of the Manitoba
GenWeb pages, you have inspired me to create a page about the Barnardo Home in Russell, which falls within the Parkland region of MB.
http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Ecanmb/parkland.htm
It will take me a while to organize information into a decent web page, but I thought I would share a few links I've found with you now.

You can read about the home in an online digitized book.
Banner County: History of Russell & District. Chapter 15: Dr. Barnardo Home in Russell Municipality.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/viewpage.asp?ID=967984&size=3

The Barnardo Home for Boys in Russell, MB, a bit southwest of Russell, was located within the Parkland Region of Manitoba and the Marquette
census/electoral district. The legal description for the Barnardo home is: NE quarter Section 37, T20, R28, W1
1906 Census of Canada - #5 (Marquette District), subdistrict #15

http://www.afhs.ab.ca/data/census/1906/manitoba/5/mb_5_15_al...

I looked through the .pdf file for the Russell area, but did not find Mahoney. As stated in the digitized book, new arrivals stayed at the home farm for about a year, then were sent to work on farms in various places in Manitoba. Unfortunately, the whole 1906 census for Manitoba is not yet indexed.

Russell War Memorial Cenotaph. I see there are names around the base of the monument. I don't know if there is a listing on the web. I suspect
names of those would be local Russell residents at the time of enlistment.

You have probably seen many general links about the Barnardo children in Canada. It can be very informative to browse through the archives of
the BHC list, A mailing list for anyone who has a genealogical interest in the 100,000 British Home Children - alleged orphans - who were emigrated to Canada by 50 child care organizations 1870-1948.

There are many comments about life in Barnardo homes.

Hope these help.

Nancy

I was reading your comments about Russells Farm in Manitoba, and my cousin in Ontario believes her father who she has never seen was a boy there. The only bit of knowledge she has is that he was there when it was burned down. Is it possible that you might know if this is true if so when it was. Thanks in anticipation

Robert is listed in E. A. Struthers 1905 Day Book. Struthers was the manager of Barnardo Farm Home in Russell MB. He arrived at Quebec on the Southward 1904-10-09 The book is housed the the MB archives. Struthers does mention some of the boys leaving on placements I am currently going throught the day book If I come across any more info on Robert I'll post it.
