I am a grand daughter of Armann Gudmundsson. My biological mother is Fern. I was named Margaret Fern Goodman when I was born in 1946. I was placed for adoption at birth, therefore, and was adopted in 1949. Therefore, I don't know anything much about my grandfather or grandmother. I know my biological father was of Icelandic descent, but I am not allowed to know his name. It is a long story, I'm going to be 66 in October and I still have never met any of my biological family.
My grandmother's maiden name was Margaret Moar or Moor, she lived in Manitoba, Fairford, I think. She lived to be 103 or 104 years old. I know my mother is living in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
If you want to contact me on my personal e-mail, it is mplands@drytel.net.
Thank you.
My name now is Patricia Lands

Interesting, have not seen this record but have a copy of the actual marriage affidavit which shows their marriage date as Feb.06, 1917 (not very clear) and the ages as 33 and 19. Her death registration indicates her birthdate as October 1, 1897 in Wennpeg Beach (Winnipeg Beach). The eldest child was born in 1917. Have no other info other than this. Appreciate your response...thanks.

Thanks for your interest. I have a copy of the marriage licence and the registration from which I learned the names of Marie Minnie Smith's parents - father: James R. Smith and Marguerite M.Burns and that they were Presbyterian. Place of birth is shown as Winnipeg. The death registration is the only piece of info that states her birth as Oct.1, 1897 and born in "Wennpeg" Winnipeg Beach. To the family's knowledge she did not have any contact with family and their marriage in Thunder Bay was held without any family present. I was hoping to find some info on the 1901 Census but nothing to date.

Hi Posting the request for Marie Minnie SMITH and including her Married Surname LaFORREST -might be helpful - Minnie may havekept in touch with people under her married surname.
Note: In our family as well others
it seems that after some women marry - younger family members do not know/remember the persons surname previus to marriage.

Do you have the Marriage Regisration
This is one of the more accurate documents -since the Bride and Groom provide the information.
Depending on the Requirements of the time and place -
Names of Bride and Groom - Age -Place of Birth -Occupation-Residence. Marital Status. Names of both sets of Parents including maiden name of the Mother. Place of birth of Parents -[some have occupaton of father ]
Religion of families -
Date of Marriage - Place of Marriage - including name of church. Name of Clergy. Religious service
Names and addresses of Witnesses
Most families will not have a copy of the registration - unless they have requested same.

We may find the Marriage Licence in family posessions
This is a basic extract of Information - good as proof of the event - without giving to much personal information - and a nice keepsake.

You have the Death Certificate? Registration?
The Registration of death - Information comes from the Informant - many times a family member / husband etc.
Depending on their knowledge - interest and requirements of the time.
May show:
Name and Address - Date and Place of Birth -
Sex.Race.Citizenship.
Marital Status - Name of Spouse
Occupation. Industry. Time at Occupation. Last Worked
Names of Parents - Including Maiden name of the Mother
Place of Birth of the Parents.
Date of Death. Place of Death. *May show Cause of Death -
Burial or Cremation.
Name and Address of Funeral Home, Cemetery. Physician.

Thanks for your reply. Marie Minnie Smith married John Laforrest in Thunder Bay in Feb.1917. We know that she lived in Dryden, Ont. for one or two years before her marriage. She was killed in a tragic train accident in July 1937 in Quibell, Ontario leaving behind many children. None of the family has any knowledge of her family background with the exception of the info on her death certificate. The 1906 and 1911 census shows a Mary Smith (B.1897) as an orphan but nothing in 1916 census. Have obtained a death record for a Marguerite Smith who died in June 1903 at the Industrial School in St.Boniface at age 22 from cancer but there is no family information and the informant was a priest. There may or may not be a connection...looking for any info to link us to her family.
Haven't found anything in the 1901 Census.

Is there any documented history of Winnipeg Beach for this time frame? Looking for information on boarding houses that employed staff or anyone who knew of a Marie Minnie (Mary/Maria) Smith born October 1897 to James R. Smith and Marguerite M. Burns. MVS have no birth registration but her death registration (Ontario) indicates that she was born in "Wennpeg Beach, Manitoba". Any suggestions on where to search? Much appreciated.

I grew up in Bird's Hill which is just 10 miles north of Winnipeg, definitely not in the Interlake Region.
It was the Silver Fox Farm when I was young and I remember visiting it also. Sorry I have no information on the owners. In the 50's, our friends English immigrants Fred Askew and his family lived there and he worked on the mink ranch I believe.
When it closed down the land was sold for housing. It is now the Silver Fox Estates built up high with the gravel pit below, which has been turned into a park with walking paths etc. I haven't seen it for many years. Perhaps some trees have grown on the gravel by now, it was pretty barren in the beginning. At least by BC standards where I now live.

Thank you very much for your reply to my query about the Babij family from Pleasant Home and the link to Western Land Grants, which I hadn't seen before. I recently was given a copy of a map showing their homestead allotment and a map showing their ancestral village in Galicia, so I am making progress, slowly but surely. I have yet to check the LDS records, but a friend who has been doing her family genealogy for years, has given me roll #'s to lookup, so I will be doing that soon. Thanks so much for your help and advice :)
Thank you so much for taking time to reply to my query with great suggestions, most of which I have or am still researching. I have had some success to date, mostly researching Canadian Census records. I did also find the family on a ships list and immigration records, so I was able to establish their home village - Gusztynek (now called Hushtynka, apparently). One problem I've encountered, and I believe it's a common one, is that their names changed over the years on the Census records. I've seen it listed as Babij, Bobbee, Babiczuk and Babichuk. I have found their original homestead and the small country cemetary where they were likely buried, so I am definitely making progress, thanks to the help and suggestions of others who have been doing their own family genealogy and know where to look. I will definitely look for the books you listed in my local library. Thanks again!

Hi
Not sure what information you are seeking, but it is best to find all you can in Canada.
My family also settled in the Pleasant Home area, which consists of many miles, it is not a village or town, it was an area that was given out for settlement.
A good place to start is looking at getting marriage/death or birth information from the Manitoba Vital Stats you may find the place where your ancestors originated in Ukraine. There are many listings for your family,
which are listed under by surrounding areas Rural Municipally ..and not necessay from Pleasant Home which more than likely be listed under the RM of Armstrong, or RM of St. Andrews, maybe RM of Rockwood, can include Teulon as well ) This is a area where many boundry lines are and all within 10 or 15 miles. You may also check ancestors listed under Gimli, or Kreuzberg,( current day Fraserwood ) http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/ListView.php

Western Land Grantshttp://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/western-land-gr...
I think your query should be posted on the Pembina Valley Board. Maybe the family had a story in a local history book.

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE SEARCH

Can someone please help me in my search for a record of the marriage of my grandparents in the mid 1920's in MORDEN, Manitoba. The record of their marriage does no show up in any regular search in the the archives (why??) I have been able to research the Zombra/Ziombra/Zembra side of the family but the Kurycz/Kurysh/Kurish side is a mystery and I'm hoping thet the marriage cert will give me a hometown in Poland/Ukraine to continue. Jakew Kurycz came to Canada in 1911 I believe. I have found his details on the shipping passanger list. He later changes his name to Jack/John Kursyh/Kurish.
