Winnipeg Beach History (1897-1906) - Smith/Burns family
Is there any documented history of Winnipeg Beach for this time frame? Looking for information on boarding houses that employed staff or anyone who knew of a Marie Minnie (Mary/Maria) Smith born October 1897 to James R. Smith and Marguerite M. Burns. MVS have no birth registration but her death registration (Ontario) indicates that she was born in "Wennpeg Beach, Manitoba". Any suggestions on where to search? Much appreciated.

Hi Was Marie Minnie [Mary/Maria] SMITH married ? daughter of James R. SMITH and Marguerite M. SMITH nee BURNS.
Have you seached the 1901,1906,1911 Census?
Some families fail to Register a birth - for whatever reason - There may be Late Registration - around the time of pension / age 64/65

Re: Winnipeg Beach History (1897-1906) - Smith/Burns family
Thanks for your reply. Marie Minnie Smith married John Laforrest in Thunder Bay in Feb.1917. We know that she lived in Dryden, Ont. for one or two years before her marriage. She was killed in a tragic train accident in July 1937 in Quibell, Ontario leaving behind many children. None of the family has any knowledge of her family background with the exception of the info on her death certificate. The 1906 and 1911 census shows a Mary Smith (B.1897) as an orphan but nothing in 1916 census. Have obtained a death record for a Marguerite Smith who died in June 1903 at the Industrial School in St.Boniface at age 22 from cancer but there is no family information and the informant was a priest. There may or may not be a connection...looking for any info to link us to her family. Haven't found anything in the 1901 Census.

Re: Winnipeg Beach History (1897-1906) -SMITH, BURNS family
Hi Posting the request for Marie Minnie SMITH and including her Married Surname LaFORREST -might be helpful - Minnie may havekept in touch with people under her married surname. Note: In our family as well others it seems that after some women marry - younger family members do not know/remember the persons surname previus to marriage.
Do you have the Marriage Regisration This is one of the more accurate documents -since the Bride and Groom provide the information. Depending on the Requirements of the time and place - Names of Bride and Groom - Age -Place of Birth -Occupation-Residence. Marital Status. Names of both sets of Parents including maiden name of the Mother. Place of birth of Parents -[some have occupaton of father ] Religion of families - Date of Marriage - Place of Marriage - including name of church. Name of Clergy. Religious service Names and addresses of Witnesses Most families will not have a copy of the registration - unless they have requested same.
We may find the Marriage Licence in family posessions This is a basic extract of Information - good as proof of the event - without giving to much personal information - and a nice keepsake.
You have the Death Certificate? Registration? The Registration of death - Information comes from the Informant - many times a family member / husband etc. Depending on their knowledge - interest and requirements of the time. May show: Name and Address - Date and Place of Birth - Sex.Race.Citizenship. Marital Status - Name of Spouse Occupation. Industry. Time at Occupation. Last Worked Names of Parents - Including Maiden name of the Mother Place of Birth of the Parents. Date of Death. Place of Death. *May show Cause of Death - Burial or Cremation. Name and Address of Funeral Home, Cemetery. Physician.

Re: Winnipeg Beach History (1897-1906) -SMITH, BURNS family
Thanks for your interest. I have a copy of the marriage licence and the registration from which I learned the names of Marie Minnie Smith's parents - father: James R. Smith and Marguerite M.Burns and that they were Presbyterian. Place of birth is shown as Winnipeg. The death registration is the only piece of info that states her birth as Oct.1, 1897 and born in "Wennpeg" Winnipeg Beach. To the family's knowledge she did not have any contact with family and their marriage in Thunder Bay was held without any family present. I was hoping to find some info on the 1901 Census but nothing to date.

Re: Winnipeg Beach History (1897-1906) - Smith/Burns family
Interesting, have not seen this record but have a copy of the actual marriage affidavit which shows their marriage date as Feb.06, 1917 (not very clear) and the ages as 33 and 19. Her death registration indicates her birthdate as October 1, 1897 in Wennpeg Beach (Winnipeg Beach). The eldest child was born in 1917. Have no other info other than this. Appreciate your response...thanks.
