Birds Hill - Peter Fote and Royal Oak Mink Ranch

Hello

As a child I remember visiting my grandfathers mink ranch in Birds Hill, north of Winnipeg. Seems to me there was a gravel pit there and the mink ranch had a tower or lookout for foxes??

Peter Jacob Fote ran the Royal Oak Mink Ranch from approximately the mid late 1940's to the mid 1950's as far as I can tell. Apparently one of his successes was 'silvertip' breeding stock.

If anyone has any information, knowledge or references to this mink farm operation or the Fote family I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks
Ron

I grew up in Bird's Hill which is just 10 miles north of Winnipeg, definitely not in the Interlake Region.
It was the Silver Fox Farm when I was young and I remember visiting it also. Sorry I have no information on the owners. In the 50's, our friends English immigrants Fred Askew and his family lived there and he worked on the mink ranch I believe.
When it closed down the land was sold for housing. It is now the Silver Fox Estates built up high with the gravel pit below, which has been turned into a park with walking paths etc. I haven't seen it for many years. Perhaps some trees have grown on the gravel by now, it was pretty barren in the beginning. At least by BC standards where I now live.
