Hi - I was hoping that someone might be able to help me please? We understand that our house (in Surrey, UK) was used in WW2 by the Canadian Army as a Regimental Headquarters and for injured servicemen returning from the front line for recuperation.

The main house has since been split into 4 houses, one of which we recently bought. Having started some building work on it, we found a WW2 time capsule hidden under the floorboards. It's fascinating stuff and I think that whoever left it (should they still be alive) or their family would no doubt love to see the items and explore the story (such as we know it) this side of the pond. And for us, to learn what became of Mr. Hutton after he left the house would be great too.

As such, I'm now trying to track down the person or their surviving family from the details left for us to find. These include:

Name and Rank: Lt Corporal R.L Hutton - 2nd Battalion R.C.B (maybe G) Royal Canadian Army Overseas
Service Number: 436455
Home Address: Bethany, Manitoba, Canada)
Date at time in the house: November 1942 (Surrey, England)

From a little bit of research this end, I wonder whether Mr.Hutton served on the Dieppe beach landings, but this is just conjecture at this stage. The dates work though.

If anyone thinks that they might know Mr. Hutton or are related to him, or can simply lend a hand in searching from the Canadian end, that would be fantastic.
Many thanks,

Hi, I did a bit of searching, but hard to find much on WW2 Canadian Veterans
I have tried before without much luck, but I may have found something.

I tried looking in 1921 Canada census in case R.L. was born by then, but did not find anything.

So then just looked for any Hutton info with Bethany, Manitoba and came across an obit. Ids've put the link below, but the fellows name is

Ross Logan HUTTON and he was born 1924, died 2003 - quite a long obit, but it does say he was in WW2 (lied about his age as he was only 17) and was in the Royal Canadian Engineers 2nd Battalion

The obit says he was born Minnedosa ,Manitoba to Wilbert and Meriam Hutton and I looked for them and they did live in Bethany. Also obit says Ross went to Bethany school. So this seems like a very good possibility for him. AND with the info in the obit I think you could easily find the family. I suspect they would be thrilled to know that you found his time capsule ( I know I would be) and they would hopefully be able to confirm for you if he is the right fellow. :)

Hope he is !! , Carolyn

Wow Carolyn - Thank you so much! I didn't know what to expect from my post, but I'm really grateful for you help and the information you've been able to provide - and so quickly. What's more, I'm pretty sure that you've found him!! From the details I have, his parcel from home lists the sender as being a Mrs. Wilbert Hutton - so I think this is the right person. I will endeavor to make contact with the family and share what we have. Many thanks once again.

Many thanks Kathleen. I'm pretty sure that Carolyn has identified the right man, so if his relatives are interested in what we found, I would be delighted to share it with them. Thanks again!

Hi Nicola, a thought - If the family is not interested - that would be unbelievable - just wonder - if the Canada War Museum or someplace similar might be interested in the information.

I'm so glad I could help. What a great thing he did to put a time capsule in your house. I think it will be a wonderful surprise for his family.

Good that you decided to do some renovations!!
