One more note - we could never play cards that much as Grandpa saw a lot of people lose too much money over gambling.

The uncle you're referring to is Nick Skomoroch. He is believed to live in the GTA and collecting an old age pension. Your Aunt Toni is still alive so I don't know who's funeral you were at but the last name is correct. Your gigi (John Skomoroch) served in the Austro-Hungarian Empire as a cavalryman between 1908-1911 and may have served in a small skirmish in the Baltic region before coming to Canada.

You have relatives in Winnipeg that may know more.

Some of the info is accurate. Some of it isn't.

Hamerlik or Poplar River, MB (RM of Bifrost) is accurate.

John and Katherine had several sons: Mike, Bill, Harry, Fred, George, Walter & Nick. Toni (or Antoinette) is NOT a blood relative (see below under Tekla Skrabek). Only Fred is confirmed to be alive (Nick MAY be alive but is a recluse and not making himself easily available to others).

Tekla Skrabek was John's second wife after Katherine died. Tekla had children from her previous marriage (her husband had died) that included a Nick, Harry, Walter, Fred and Toni (there may have been others).

Only Fred Skrabek lives in Winnipeg. Walter Skrabek lives in Calgary.

John Skomoroch came to Canada after 1911. The reason we know that is because there is a picture of him wearing an Austro-Hungarian uniform and a medal is adorning his tunic that was awarded to members serving the empire btwn 1908-1911.

Does this help?

There are not many but I know of one of them both and would like to get a copy for my dad. Do you have any info an what he did for work? when was he a Cossack? and how do I find info on that?

Hi Abes19
Did your great grandmother live in Thunder Bay and was she married to a Paul Olearnek? My grandfather Fred Ratushniak had a sister Tekla born in 1893 in the village of Bosryry. My grandfather lived in the Ashville area in Manitoba. Could we be talking about the same Tekla?
Thanks
