Hi Bette,

Thank you! I am not sure exactly where this fellow fits into the family, he must be connected - an uncle perhaps? His death in 1915 is earlier than we suspect our Telfords emigrated from England.
Thanks again for passing that along.

Hi Deb! I just found your message and thought I would get in touch with you. John Telford married my grandfather's sister, Jane Cooke, and she and their children immigrated to Canada in 1913. The note that Bette sent you is the correct John - he must have immigrated to Canada after 1911 but before Jane came. My grandfather, Joseph Cooke, had a farm in Whitemouth for many years. John and Jane had the following children - Sarah Jane Telford, b 1899, Florence Cooke Telford b 1902, Albert Edward Telford b 1905, Joseph Telford b 1909, Elizabeth Telford b 1913, Beatrice Telford b 1907. Beatrice married Robert Johnstone in Winnipeg in 1928. I know that on the 1916 Canadian census you will find Sarah and Florence in Saskatchewan. Florence was living with her Aunt Esther Horsburgh and her family and her grandmother Sarah Jane Cooke. What happened to the other children I don't know. I haven't been able to find a death registration for Jane Cooke Telford yet.

Jane had a daughter Christina (don't know for sure if she was John's child or not) but she also immigrated to Canada in 1913. I found her on the 1916 census also living in Saskatchewan. All the girls in Saskatchewan were residing with different families.

If you have any information on the other members of the family I would certainly love to hear from you! I hope what I have sent will help you.

Regards, Dale

The Telfords in Whitemouth was my grandmother's family. Her name was Beatrice and they immigrated to Canada in 1913. Her mother was Jane Cooke Telford. Jane died in 1941 as far as my mother remembers and is buried in Whitemouth. Her father, John Telford, came to Whitemouth in 1913, a few months before Jane and the children. He died in 1915 and was buried in Whitemouth. Jane's sister Elizabeth married Edward Henderson who was the Reeve of Whitemouth for many years. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Heather! Thanks so much for replying to my query regarding the Telford family.

Jane's brother Joseph Cooke also came to Canada after marrying Elizabeth Aitkenhead in Whitehaven Cumberland. They too settled in Whitemouth Manitoba where they had a farm. They were my Dad's parents and I know he used to say that he had a lot of cousins living in Whitemouth when he was growing up.

Do you have a tree up on Ancestry by chance? I do and if you would like to send me your email address I will send you an invite so you can see what I have been able to find out on the Cooke family so far. My home email address is dazorzes@tbaytel.net.

Did your grandmother marry Robert Johnstone in Winnipeg by chance? I found a marriage certificate for a Beatrice Telford and was wondering if they are one in the same.

Thanks again for replying and I'm looking forward to hearing from you!!

Hi Deb,

I just found this post as I was searching Whitemouth. I don't know much about using a computer but I can email. peewee42951@gmail.com My grandmother Esther Cooke Horsburgh who moved to Moosomin, Sask. Canada as sister Mary Anne and Jim Aitkenhead lived on a farm in the area. Jane and Jack Telford her sister and brother-in-law. Margaret(Maggie) Telford came to Canada first, by herself according to Esther, she lived with Edward and Elizabeth Henderson and can be found in the 1911 Census District of Selkirk, Man. Jack Telford as he was known came to Canada with son John and daughter Christine on the same ship as his mother-in-law Sarah Cooke and dau Eleanor Cooke.8 July 1913 on the ship "Corsican". They took the CPR train to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jane Cooke Telford and the rest of the family came later that year, sorry I don't have the date handy at the moment. They went to Whitemouth and I presume they stayed with Elizabeth and Edward "Ted" Henderson. Florence ended up going to Moosomin and living with Esther and Alexander Horsburgh. Jane Telford was the first woman in Whitemouth to go in an airplane.

Deb, Are you in England? My questions for you is ..was Jack Telford married once before marrying Jane Cooke? The oldest daughter Margaret Telford, I can not find a birth for her and some are wondering if she was Jack's daughter and not Jane's. I have a 4 generation photo of Sarah Bell Cooke, Jane Cooke Telford, Margaret Telford Henderson and her two children Margaret and Joe Henderson. Margaret Telford married Mike Henderson the brother of Edward "Ted" Henderson.

Please email me as I may never find this site again. Carol Horsburgh Johnson

My grandmother was Beatrice Telford, sister to Maggie Telford. I have information from stories from my grandmother and research online. From the information you have above, we would be relatives.
