I encountered the same problem while searching for a great aunt.... her married name was Barton and the first 'match' I got was a page full of Barton - except Barton was the street name! I have spent much time correcting errors as I have been going through them but it is time consuming and frustrating at times.

I recognize that Ancestry is not to blame but isn't there some way of redoing the transcription?

You are lucky if you can find yourself - there are thousands and thousands of single women that have a record with Mile added to their given name Mile is how the software read Mlle, a syntex for Mademoiselle. So if the list were done in French too bad Ont. NB and Que. are the worst of course but all provinces seem to have some. Also have noticed that not one pages seems to have an Ancestry record for every voter. Some have too many and on investigation with one such page notice there were over 100 records for Des Erables and varations of the spelling depending on how the software read the voter's name. By the way, Des Erable is the street the voters lived on...

Thanks Stella. Edward Carl Uimonen landed in Ontario in 1924, he married Dora (date unknown), and he died in Hamilton in 1986.
I know that Ontario has strict privacy laws but simple BMD records would be good. I've thankfully been given some very good links on burial grounds and am attempting to get some info from them.
I'm even trying to contact possible family through social media hoping that may help.
My thanks to all those that have helped me with this enigma.

During the 1700s & early 1800s Michigan & Ontario were not the same lands as they are today. They were either subject to France or Britain. If you see Sandwich on your search, it was across the river from Detroit near Winsor, Ontario. Bordors were not defined as such so people traveled freely. Many French families may be found in Assomption Parish but records are in French. The priests usually kept good records, but their handwriting can be a problem. Best of luck.

Until the Statute of Westminster in 1931 Canada was technically part of the British Empire with final legislative control being that of the British Parliament. Until about 1947 (Canadian Citizenship Act 1946) Canadians remained British citizens, although Canadian citizenship existed from about 1910. In 1982 the British Parliament passed an act that brought the Canadian Constitution (i.e, The British North America Act, 1867) under Canadian jurisdiction. From the USA point-of-view, Canada was part of England. The key point is that throughout most of this, Canadians were 'British subjects', therefore, by USA standards, English. Therefore, "Canada, England".

Thomas

I don't know whether anyone else has encountered this yet or not but it can be difficult to find people in these records.

These records were not ‘transcribed’, they used optical recognition software. I have edited and/or corrected close to 100 entries in the last 2 weeks. In some cases it used street names as surnames. It has missed entire lines and come up with some interesting occupations for people. My great grandmother was both an ‘elk’ (clk = clerk) and a ‘rat’ (ret. = retired). I have learned to look for other family members when I find one so that I know to go back to the particular record if I can’t find someone under their own name. It also helps if you already have some idea of where your ancestors lived. I was so thrilled to see the lists because it allows me to verify where people lived but it takes almost twice as long to find someone in these records compared to hand transcription.

I suggest you contact the Oshawa Library for a copy of the obituary which you can then use to order the death certificate. If it turns out that it is not your John W., then you're only out the money and time, but then at least, you can rule him in or out of the search.

Thank you so much for your responses and links.

The name of my friend's father is John Wisniewski, born in Poland in 1914. Looking at the links I see a John Wisniewski who died in 1996, but my friend is pretty sure he was still alive about 4 years ago. His last address was Oshawa, 14 Grandview St. North. Today his daughter Christine Majanew seems to live there. It may be possible that John is still alive and lives in a nursery home.

I'll post another query telling his name.

Thanks again.

Gaby

Hi Gaby,

This information is for the province of Ontario, where Oshawa is located. According to this, your friend needs to know the *date of death* to apply for a death certificate.

https://www.orgforms.gov.on.ca/eForms/start.do

What information do I need to provide on the Online Death Certificate Application?
You must provide:

First and last name of the deceased subject
Gender
Date of death
City or town of death
Parental information about the deceased subject
If applicable, information about his or her spouse or partner.

Who is entitled to apply for a death certificate?
There are no restrictions on who may apply for a death certificate.

There should be an obituary online for those recent dates. If you post his name, someone should be able to find it.

The other possibility is that he is living in a nursing home. How do you know the daughter is the only one listed as living in the house?
Hello,
I'm writing for a German friend whose father was not married to her mother in Poland. He was a widower then and had a daughter. He was born in 1914 and before 1968 (?)emigrated to Canada. She knows his last exact address in Osahwa and has info that he was still alive about two years ago and contacted her half-sister who lives in the same house as does/did her father.
As her half-sister refused any contact she would simply like to know if her father is still alive. I do believe he isn't as only his daughter is listed as living in that house.
I do not know anything about data protection in Canada. Would my friend have a chance to find out if and when her father died between - let's say - 2008 and 2012?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Gaby (Germany)

Ginette: Somehow my response to your last, and your response to me, has disappeared from my email etc. The mysteries of cyberspace! And I did not make a note of the site you mentioned ...something like "yousearch"?? Could you give me that again please? (and if you did get a response to your very much appreciated detailed post, please let me know).

would you mind giving us the info you have (names, dates) and perhaps someone on the board can help you.

By the way, catholic baptism does not require the parents to be both catholic, but the godparents have to be. Still is if my knowledge serves me well.

Ginette
