Descendants of Carrie Elizabeth Gibson and Harold Wesley Sharp

I have traced a distant cousin Carrie Elizabeth Gibson, born 1881 Ontario, who married Harold Wesley Sharp, born 1887 in Port Hope Ontario, on 15 Oct 1910 in Toronto, Ontario.
Harold died 19 Feb 1949 in Duncan, BC and Carrie died 28 May 1980 in Victoria (I think that she was at a retirement residence/nursing home). They are together in Peace at the Royal Oak Burial Park, Falaise Dr, Victoria.

Harold's parents were Sylvester James Sharp, a ticket agent for various ship liners, and Melissa Platten. Syvester's father was Walter Sharp born in the USA and Mary Ann Weston of Ontario. Melissa's parents were Thomas Platten of England and Maria Dulmage of Quebec.

Carrie was one of two daughters of John Woodcock Gibson, barrister in London, Ontario and Mary Gibbard of Ontario, and the only one to marry. John Woodcock Gibson is the brother of my gg grandfather Stephen Gibson. They both emigrated to Canada from St Martins, Isles of Scilly, England, studied and became barristers.

I would dearly love to hear from any descendants of Carrie and Harolds.

Alert Bay obituaries

I am seeking some advice from someone knowledgable in the resources of the Alert Bay area of British Columbia.

In August 1954, Asahel Willison died in Alert Bay (British Columbia Archives Microfilm B13221/Death Records Index)at the age of 80. I believe that this was the same Ashael Willison (b. ca. 1873) who was enumerated in his father's household in Morgan County, West Virginia in the 1910 federal census, when his occupation was given as a prospector in British Columbia. No further mention of Asahel/Ashael is found in local records. His father's 1933 obituary does not list Asahel as a survivor, indicating that he had died.

I believe there is a strong possiblity that Asahel simply lost contact with his family and that they assumed that he was dead, and that this is the same person. I have not sent for a copy of his death certificate -if he had no contact with his family, a death certificate with information given by someone in British Columbia probably would not name his parents or give any information that would help me connect him to them.

An obituary may give some information on Asahel's life - what he did, when he came to British Columbia, where he had lived, etc, etc, that may help me connect him to this West Virginia family. Can anyone tell me if there was a newspaper in the Alert Bay area in 1954, if it was the custom to print obituaries that were more than fundamental information, and where the repository of such newspapers would be.

Thank you for reading this lengthy query, and any advice that you may be able to give me would be greatly appreciated.

Donald W.

I have just been given an address for J. Laing who lived in Richmond, Vancouver, possibly 1960's and earlier. The address was Linton Street, Richmond which doesn't seem to to be on any map. All that is listed is Linton Ct.
This person may have been a great uncle or other close relative of my grandmother. It is possible that the name was either James [b.c.1893] or John [b.1885] as brothers with those names emigrated to Canada around the time of WW1.
I know it is a busy time for everyone but after the festivities are over I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this family.
Wishing you a very merry Christmas and health and happiness in 2008

Unusual place names and locations

I've noted that often there are questions from distant researchers regarding place names that as a local I know the area and road names that coincide.

I've found it useful for foreign research to use:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?ned=ca&hl=en&tab=nl

using the unknown factor as a search keyword with a "Road" after it often helps gain perspective when former "village" is now absorbed into a larger community.

I hope this is of help.

Regards - happy hunting
Dennice

Sage Family and descendants Vancouver Island and beyond

Hello to all,

I have not posted much in the last few years, but I am still very actively researching information on this very large family. I apologize for the length of this information, but I would really like to contact family members. I have found a few over the years. I would like to contact Doug Sage who I understand is a relative of Edward Joseph or Edward Floyd Sage. Anyone related to this family can contact me through the Vancouver Island GenWeb at http://www.rootsweb.com/~bcvancou/ as I am the volunteer co-ordinator. My email is available there.

The family starts on Vancouver Island with Jesse Sage and Mary Ann Dando who arrived on the Princess Royal to Esquimalt Harbour in Victoria. They were then transferred to the Beaver along with the 26 other families headed for Nanaimo under contract to the HBC. They arrived "along with the meat and potatoes" in Nanaimo on November 27th, 1854 at 11 a.m. This was the first ship to arrive with families, not single men to work the coal fields.

Earlier recruits from Fort Rupert (which had been disbanded because of poor coal) were on site in Nanaimo, building houses for the arriving new workers. When the families arrived on November 11th, the town had 100 people.

Jesse and Mary Ann married at the Church of St Thomas in Dudley Worcestershire on 25 Jan 1846.

Selena Sage was born in the Sept quarter of 1846 (supposedly 27 Nov 1846 - not proved) possibly in Dudley Worcestershire. She married Edward Walker in 1860 (BC Archives information starts in 1872)in Nanaimo and they had 9 children that I have found so far (Alfred Edward, Ellen Jane, William Henry, Joseph, Albert George, Mary Ann Louisa, Etheline Jesse, Enoch Charles and Harley) . Selena died 13 Jul 1908 Cumberland. Edward died 17 Mar 1902 Union Mines Cumberland.

William Sage was born in 1851, I have not found his birth records yet. He did not marry. He died on 1 Jul 1899 in Nanaimo.

George Sage (my g grandfather) was born at sea on the Princess Royal on 30 Sep 1854 while rounding Cape Horn in a storm. It has been said in the Volumes from the Black Country by Peggy Nicholls that he was always mad because he was never considered a "native son", as he was not born in Nanaimo (the birth would have been recorded in London England the home port of the ship. He married Mary Ann Stubbins 14 Feb 1874 in Nanaimo and they had 12 children (Miriam "Mira", Rosa Elizabeth, George Henry, Sophia Jane, Mary Ellen "Nellie", Edward Joseph "possibly Edward Floyd", Valentine, Viola, Albert William, Lily, Robert Jess and Gladys Grace. George died on 14 Oct 1916 on Newcastle Island Nanaimo. Mary Ann died on 24 Apr 1948 in Victoria.

Joseph Sage was born 19 Oct 1856 in Nanaimo. He possibly married an "Eliza" and they may have had a child called "Annie" about 1886. Nothing has been proved. He died on th 14 Aug 1900 in Nanaimo.

Enoch Sage was born 16 June 1858 in Nanaimo. He married Ida May Sullivan on 20 Sep 1890 in Nanaimo. I have not found any children for them. He died 14 Nov 1945 Essondale. Ida died 17 Feb 1956.

Louisa Sage was born 7 Dec 1862 in Nanaimo. She first married James Thomas O'Brien on 10 Oct 1880 in Nanaimo. They had 5 children (Thomas James, Clarence, Mary Cladin, Lucinda Marie and James Albert). James died on 21 Apr 1891 in Nanaimo. Louisa married Dan Gregory Daily on 1 Feb 1894 in Nanaimo. They had 3 children that I have found so far (Mary Katherine, Ellen Selina and Josephine Louise). Louisa died 22 Feb 1915 in Nanaimo and Dan died 9 Feb 1931 in Nanaimo.

Abel Sage was born 13 Dec 1864 in Nanaimo. I have no other information.

I have many more genealogy lines attached to the main five lines of the family. Some are Georgson, Rains, Carey, Martin, Gordon, Flynn, McAllister, Jones, Munroe, Machin, Greenwell, Smith, Karleen and Douglas.

Please contact me, I'd love to hear from you.

Yours in genealogy, Wendy Jones

BARNETT family in BRITISH COLUMBIA from the 1920's

I am researching the family of Joseph BARNETT born 1888 in Cornwall England. After living in Arizona with wife Edith and two sons Clifton and Joseph he appears to have come to BC after 1920. Joseph Senior had links with copper mining/processing in the US. I know his mother Emily was also with him and I believe she died at Britannia Beach in 1926.
Any clues on the life of Joseph and Family in BC would be much appreciated
Some tidbits from an 1858 copy of "The Victoria Gazette" newspaper

"The Victoria Gazette was the pioneer newspaper of Victoria, if not for British Columbia. Tidbits:

Mr. Thomas Harris, of the Queen's market, is the first to open a butcher shop in the Island.

The arrival of the first group of Chinese by the steamer "Oregon". The sign of the first to go into business appears as "Chang Tsoo", washing & ironing.

Another item informs its readers that 20 vessels were advertised in San Francisco as on the berth for Victoria.

The arrive of the steamer "Oregon" from San Francisco with mail express and 1900 passengers.

The council have ordered the removal of all bodies from the cemetery on Johnson and Douglas Streets to the new cemetery on Quadra Street.

The steamers "Orizaba" and "Cortez" have arrived with the large number of 2800 passengers.

3500 mining licenses have so far been granted.

In consequence of the reduction in the price of lumber to $50 per 1000 feet, houses are springing up everywhere.

The first steamer to reach Fort Yale is the "Umatilla", 21st July, 1858.

Sheriff Muir announces by advertisement that anyone found with firearms on their person would be arrested and punished.

In future, Sheriff Muir will arrest all gamblers.

Captain William Brotchie has been appointed harbor master for Victoria by Governor Douglas.

The fare by steamer from San Francisco to Victoria is $30.

August 4, 1858 - the first arrival of the steamer "Pacific" in Victoria harbor is announced.

Married by Rev. E. Cridge, William Reid to Margaret Work.

first trip of the steamer "Leviathan" to Puget Sound, Captain Titcombe.

The paper announces that over 100 vessels from all parts were then on the berth for Victoria.

An editorial calls for the establishment of a public hospital, a jail and a deadhouse. The present jail is too small, and coroner's inquests have to be held in the open aire in front of the jail; the jury stand around the corpse, some leaning against it, spread on some boards, and the coroner sits on the top of an empty barrel.

Birth - August 12th, 1858, the wife of Wm. A. Mouatt, of a daughter.

Married - Same date, Edward Parsons, H.M.S. Satellite, to Emma, eldest daughter of James Thorn.

Improvements - since 12th June there have been 250 brick and wooden houses erected in the city.

An open letter to Rev. E. Cridge appears in the Gazette from an indignant American, who, with his family, had attended Rev. Mr. Cridge's preachings, and who now feels insulted at the treatmnt he received lately by the sexton showing a negro into the same pew occupied by himself and family, also treating other respectable Americans in the same way. He further stated that, the day being warm, the peculiar odor was very objectionable, so that several Americams left before the service was over.
A day or two later this is answered by a letter signed M.G.W., who was a colored grocer of Yates Street (Lester & Gibbs). He was a clever writer, and handled the gentleman, Mr. Sharpstone, without gloves, saying some very pertinent as well as impertinent things, taking especial exception to the reference of Mr. Sharpstone to the peculiar odor and perspiration.
Mr. Cridge appears with a letter, throwing oil on the troubled waters, and the editor thinks enough has been said.

A change of ownership of the 'Gazette' is announced, and Abel Whitton becomes proprietor.

Bayley's Hotel, corner Yates & Government Streets, J.C. Keenan, proprietor. Board $15 a week.

A cricket match between H.M.S. Satellite's and Victoria Elevens at Beacon Hill. "Tipperary Bill" shoots a man at this cricket match and kills him. He is still at large.

There have been 344 houses erected in Victoria in 3 months.

New map of city issued: The first 3 streets named after the 3 Governors (Quadra, Blanchard, Douglas). Secondly, after distinguished navigators on the coast (Vancouver and Cook). Thirdly, after the first ships to visit these waters (Discovery, Herald and Cormorant). fourthly, after Arctic adventurers (Franklin, Kane, Bellot and Rae). And fifthly, after Canadian cities, lakes and rivers (Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, St. Lawrence, Ottawa, Superior and Ontario).

I am looking for relative by the name of Phonie. Possible surnames include Wolsey and Braatz. She was born after 1906 and has died sometime after 1966. She was mentioned in an obituary for Mrs. Luella M. Olson as being her sister. It also said that she lived in Vancouver at the time (1966).

Can anyone help me find out who this woman was or is. I really need a surname, a date of birth, and a date of death (if she has one).

She is the sister to Luella M. (Harder) Olson, Mamie (Braatz-Wolsey) Burch, and William F. Wolsey. I believe that her parents are William A. Wolsey and Minnie Harder. I have tried Ancestry.com with no luck.

Thanks,
Jenn

Don't know where/when they married, in BC or if they went back to QC...
- In the 1940's they moved from Burnaby, BC to Port Coquitlam and then to Duncan on Vancouver Island.
- She died of massive injuries in a car accident on the island in the late 1950's
Looking for:
(1) Marriage date / place, probably mid to late 1920's
(2) Date / place of death for Cora. (I have Aldai- my grandfather left me good notes)
(3) Any information on the accident

Sister Therese Gregoire
New Orleans Louisana

Frederich Lawrence McFall

When I moved from Samoa (an island in the South Pacific) to the US more than 20 years ago, I had in my possession my grandfather's birth certificate and his marriage certificate. He married an island girl. I have misplaced/lost both. This is all the information that I can remember from the birth certificate.
He was born Frederich Lawrence (Lawrence might be with a "u") McFall in Nanaimo BC. His mother's name was MaryEllen Chambers. (She was from England) McFall is of Scottish descent. His birthdate was July 4...can't remember the year, but it would be around the late 1800's. I can't seem to find any information on him.
He came to Samoa on a whaling or fishing boat. My grandmother-the island girl he married is part Samoan-Fijian.
Can someone point me in the right direction or suggest where to look? Thanks

I have a copy of the 1912 book "Some Reminiscenses of old Vitoria", written by Edgar Fawcett in 1911 (published 1912). He lived in Victoria as a young boy, moving there from San Francisco in 1859. In 1860, Victoria issued its first Directory, as they estimated that 35,000 immigrants from California and elsewhere were no in the area. The author of this directory was Edward Mallandaine.

In 1911, Edgar Fawcett went through the 1860 directory to see how many of its original residents were still alive. Only 62 were still accounted for.
JOHNSTON & WYLIE - Vernon area

I'm looking for information on and contacts with descendants of John McQueen Johnston and Susannah Way - also, Alexander Kenneth Wylie and Susan Johnston.

John was the first surviving son of Robert "Red Robin" Johnston, b. 1808 in Ireland, and Mary "May" Frances McQueen, b. 1819 in Scotland. They met in The United Counties of Prescott & Russell of UPPER CANADA, married in 1833 and raised a family in what is now N. Plantagenet Twp., Prescott Co., Ontario, CANADA. Theirs was the second farm due north of the small town of Pendleton. Restored photos of both Red Robin and May along with other family members can be seen at: http://www.pbase.com/cjmax/johnston_family_album&page=al...

Alexander Wylie, b. 1876, married Susan Johnston, b. 1879, in Ontario. They moved to the Vernon, B.C., area, but I don't have a date for this - probably soon after their marriage. They may have travelled with John Johnston and his family or gone before or after them. I do know that they had 3 daughters, and that Susan died in 1909. I don't know what happened to their daughters: Shirley (b. 1902), Stella (b. 1905) and Verna (b. 1907). Did they die or were the daughters taken in by another family? I've found out just recently that there were some other Wylies in the Vernon area at that time. Alex. went back to Ontario without his daughters. Later he married Gladys Anderson, sister of my grandmother Florence Anderson Johnston.

I also would like to find out why John took his family out to the Vernon area. Did he follow another yet unknown Johnston family member? Did they follow the Wylie family? I gather that they were following the logging industry as they returned to Ontario after a family member lost a hand. Lots of questions, and so few answers - so what's new? lol...

I live in the Houston, Texas, area and would welcome information on any of the above mentioned and their descendants.

Good hunting,

Cliff.

Cliff.

Hello
I am working on the ancestry of Edward T Sullivan, born in Victoria 24 Jan 1892. In the 1901 census he and his siblings are all living with Edward & Alice I Booth, who are listed as the parents. I'm assuming they were all adopted by this couple, as there are two other young siblings in the home who appear to be foster children.

2415240 Booth Edward M Head M Oct 30 1854 47
2416240 Booth Alice I. M Son S Jan 24 1892 9
2421240 Simpson Walter M Boarder S Jun 12 1892 9
2422240 Simpson Ethel F Boarder S Sep 5 1898 3

The census states that Edward Booth came fron England in 1891, and Alice in 1876. I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light on this family ... who the Sullivan parents were, perhaps how they died.
Edward Sullivan immigrated to Everett WA, married Cherie Fillion about 1914, and the couple lived there until their deaths in 1966 and 1970.
Thanks
Tiffany Fugère

Marjorie Barker (nee MacHaffie) obit or family info

Marjorie Seymour Barker (nee MacHaffie) was my daughter of my great grand uncle, David MacHaffie. I would like to know what happened to her family and if any of her descendants would like to share family information.

Marjorie was the daughter of David MacHaffie and Alice Seymour and the wife of Sydney Barker. Marjorie died in
Oct 9 1963 in Victoria, the widow of Sydney. I have Marjorie's death certificate, but not her obit.

When Marjorie's mother, Alice, died in 1943, Alice's obit. listed: "two grandsons Capt. D.C. Barker, Canadian Army Overseas, and Ronald Barker, R.C.A.F., and one great-granddaughter, in England."

I believe that the D.C Barker noted in the obit. is David C.S Barker. It's possible that this is the same David C.S. Barker that attended the Shawinigan School (Groves' 32) and died in 1999.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help in my research and possibly making contact with family descendants.

Regards,
Gail

Hoping to get in contact with descendants of Bessie Evelyn(Kearney)Dow and Roy Hanson Dow. Originally from New Brunswick, they moved to BC sometime between 1908 and 1911. Bessie died in Burnaby 18 Aug 1969, and Roy died in Vancouver 9 May 1970. Bessie's notice of death lists being survived by three daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. A. Almeder), Marion (Mrs. B.W. Rossum)Lois (Mrs. R.B. Gordon) and two sons, R. Alan, and Walter A.

Prior to the Burnaby library sending me Bessie's death notice (awesome people), I only knew of Evelyn and Marion via the 1911 census.
My Great grandmother Harriet Leyland nee Ankers had a younger sister Beatrice who married Jack Longworth. They went to live in Canada, Vancover or Victoria Island, British Columbia. The girls' father was called Robert Ankers and their mother Mary Emma Ankers nee Jones. The marriage of Beatrice and Jack took place sometime between 1901 and 1910 I think and they emigrated shortly after that. My Grandmother, Hilda Tillotson nee Leyland, corresponded with her Aunt Beattie. Would love to contact any Canadian relatives. Have photographs of all the people mentioned including wedding of Jack and Beattie.

Does anyone have any information on what happened to Ruth Eleanor Kinsey who married Burnett Alexander Ward in Toronto, Ontario in 1925?

Burnett Alexander Ward died on 16 April 1974 in Mission, BC where he was a teacher. He was cremated a few days later in Vancouver. I have his obituary.

However, I cannot find out what happened to his wife Ruth. There is a Ruth Ward listed in the records of the BC Archives but it appears that is not her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking Mr &/or Mrs W.R. [Bill] Clark, and daughter Andrena or anyone who can help me contact them.

The Clark family was last known to be at: 1550 Marple St., Vancouver BC, 2 Nov. 1943 (from an entry in my father's photograph album, under *Memory Leaves*). Andrena would
have been about 4 years old then; born c1938-39. Bill Clark was also known to have been at 1621 Quadra St., Victoria sometime before Maple St. Home town recorded as Edmonton Alberta.

Bill Clark and my Dad (Bill/Billie WYATT) served together, during the war. Dad was on the west coast Triangle Run, for about 18 months (1941-43). Know he served aboard HMCS Prince David, but I'm not sure which other west coast ships and I believe Bill Clark was on the David, as well. My Dad then returned to his home port of Halifax NS, which is where he was born.

Aside from letting Andrena know her Dad's friend honoured his promise to her, I now find I also have a genealogical reason for trying to contact them.

Much appreciated, if anyone can help.

Cheers ... Toni, Ontario.

Later letters from his son are from Lake Cowichan and Paldi - I found those on current maps near Duncan but can't find Elk Point.
By any chance is Elk Point somewhere along Elk Lake shoreline? Elk Lake seems to be near Duncan and Victoria end of the Island on old maps.
Also mentioned is a Spring Port or Spring Point maybe should be one word? - any ideas of where either place was or is would be much appreciated.- Mary

Milligans at Port Alberni

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for info on Robert and Kate Sarah Milligan (nee Saalmans) who emigrated to Canada, probably after 1912, from England. They lived in Port Alberni. They had two children, Kathleen Mary and Robert Henry (born in 1917 - my father). Kate died in December 1929 and Robert on 30th January 1930. I have been unable to find any reference to Robert's death anywhere. A couple of times I did try contacting an address given on the British Columbia Finding Aid site, but never received a reply. After Kate and Robert died, my father and his sister were sent back to England to be brought up by relatives. I also don't know when Kathleen was born, although I do know she was older than my father. I'm very interested to find out the story behind Kate's and Robert's death, why they died so closely together. Unfortunately, I never thought to find out about all this while my father was still alive.

My parents and I moved to Australia in 1960 and my father had no more contact with his sister, who had married (surname Thomas).

Can anyone please help?
Thanks,
Pam.

Hello,

I have just begun researching the family of ROBERT (BOB) SMITH, and would very much appreciate any assistance:

Robert had a brother named James (Jim) SMITH. Both born between 1915 and 1930.
Bob and Jim were from the Toronto ON area. During WWII, they trained in Nanaimo BC. I don't know when they arrived in Nanaimo, but know they were there as late as 1942.

During their time in Nanaimo (and perhaps prior to that, in Toronto,) Bob and Jim had friends named 'Lucky', 'Al' (a Native Indian, from Ontario), 'Slim', and 'Seely' (HMCS Comox), to name a few.

I don't know what regiment Bob was with, but it may have been the Highlanders. If so, it was possibly The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's).

I have stories and momentos of Bob and his brother Jim, and would love to share.

I am looking to locate Bob or Jim Smith, their descendants, or perhaps their friends.

I would be grateful also if anyone has any ideas or some advice on where I should begin.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Lewis

Valeria was her maiden name and she came to Australia as adisplaced person in 1949.She met my father on board ship, she was only 19 and he was 10 years older and i gather he did not want to know when she became pregnant. She was Czech and he was Hungarian. She left Aussie in 1954 and was supposedly going to canada for 4 months only for a holiday, but she didn't return to Aussie. She had no family that i know of and she was working as a waitress after i was born, although her immigration papers she said she was working as a photographer before she came to aussie.Thank you so much for your response, i truly hope that i find her before it is too late. Do you know if Canadian immigration would have records of her leaving the country. Carol.

Need help tracing Julia Taylor (or O'Rourke?) who emigrated from London England in the early 1900's

Can anyone help me?? I know that my ancestor Julia Taylor followed her daughter Amy (think her surname was O'Rourke) to Vancouver in the early 1900's but I don't know where to start looking.
The story goes that Julia absconded to Canada, having illegally sold her considerable inheritance and lived out her days with her illigitimate daughter Amy, who ran a boarding house. Two of Julia's sons followerd her later and apparently were mounted police - who knows if that's true? There is also rumour that with her money she purchased a large department store in Vancouver. Other relatives also went out to Canada to live later on, including my nan's sister - Grace Taylor, who I think married someone called Lemont. I have a picture of Grace with her neighbour Mrs McCracker/en? And I also have a picture of the infamous Julia sent to my great Grandfather, her son, when she looked to be in her 80's - she was born in London in 1847 so this could have been in the 1920's or 30's?
Does anyone know where I can start looking for traces of these relatives?
HELP PLEASE!!
Thank you, Beverley Bunn
