Hello:
My mother, Tryphena Sampson, was the daughter of two Cornish Parents. She was born in Nanaimo. Her grandparents on her mother's side were Tembys and Lukeys, both from Cornwall. Her mother was born in Wisconsin. The whole family settled in B.C., where she met her Cornish born husband, John Sampson. John Sampson was written up in the "Histoiry of British Columbia". They had a large family.
I have been in contact with the Cornish American Society. They have begun a map showing Cornish settlements in North America, and as of last September had not included Vancouver Island, where I know many Cornish lived.
I would be most interested in having some figures about the Cornish in that area, so I can advise them that we need to be included.
I'm sure they would be most interested in any information regarding clusters of Cornish people in B.C. I assume there were a number of Cornish miners in the Cariboo gold rush, and some may predominate in that area.
I would be happy to hear from you, and be of any assistance possible in your project.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Banns
