Hi Marilyn... it has been a few years since I was here as you may see. My new email will be attached to this message, so feel free to contact me if you like.
Years ago when I would go to the BC Archives a lot, I always rtan into an elderly lady who was researching ALL Cornish British Columbians. I would talk to her when I had questions about my Cornish ancestor; Edwin Joseph Rosman. She was very knowledgeable and respectfully gathering all Cornish pioneers. She lived part time in Victoria, British Columbia, and partime in Cornwall, UK.
Sadly I have tried to find her for the past number of years and fear she may have passed on. She was elderly back in the 1980's. Either that or she may have stayed in Cornwall. Either way I may be able to find out what happened to her, now I have a few more contacts.
The other way would be to contact the Archives in Victoria and leave a message or ask what happened to the lady. She was an avid genealogist and may have my and your ancestors from Cornwall in files.
The Sampson surname was not my Cornish line, they came from Kent, England. But, it was my Rosman surname that came from Cornwall. The surname had many changes over the years; Rossman, Rosmann, and others, so it came to be Rosman by mid 1800's. The surname Kemp(Kempe) is also tied in to my lineage, from Cornwall.
I am familiar with your Sampson's from Nanaimo, my Sampson ancedstor was there by 1852, he had arrived on the Hudson Bay ship "Norman Morison" in
azrch of 1850, at Victoria (Esquimalt). He spent a few years up at Fort Rupert at the north end of Vancouver Island, that was before he arrived in Nanaimo.
Cheers; Rocky
