Coquitlam Cemetery - Beirnes, Mrs Florence

Coquitlam Cemetery - Beirnes, Mrs Florence

I have a death registration for a Mrs. Florence Beirnes who died November 5, 1959 in Essondale, B.C., apparently in the Provincial Mental Hospital. She was born in Ontario on Oct 19, 1896 and was a widow. It states that she was buried in Coquitlam at 'Institutional Cemetery'.
I am trying to find her maiden name and her husband's name as neither are mentioned on the death registration.

I'm hoping someone might know the name of the cemetery or have the cemetery transcripts. I'm assuming she is buried next to her husband.

Thanks !

Jim

In the 18 years of researching the Beirnes family, I have found that I am related to almost every Beirnes in Canada and a few in the U.S.
However whilst knowing maybe a thousand names, I don't have nearly them all, especially the names or maiden names of some of the wives, which is why I was hoping in this case Florence may have been interred next to her husband and by finding his name maybe I could connect him to his parents whom I suspect were from Saskatchewan or Manitoba or Ontario.
The Beirnes family came from Ireland and settled here in Ontario in the 1830's, before some moved west.
I'll take a look for an obituary for Florence in the Vancouver Sun.

Thanks for your help!

Jim

Hi, Jim - An obituary will be helpful in identifying - members of the family - when Florence passed away. I would also consider contacting the Funeral Home - now in Abbotsford - they should hold records - perhaps archived off site - Also the Provincial Archive.

Many years ago - we found that the spinster great aunt - of a connected family member - had spent her last months at Essondale - Her fiancé had died in WW1 - and she never married - eventually coming to Canada - and living with her older brother and family. eventually - being committed to Essondale - The records - are absolutely amazing - well worth the time and effort.

We have some Beirnes in my husband's family tree.

George Harold Beirnes, son of Joseph Wellington Beirnes & Henrietta McKay, born 31 Dec 1895 in Solsgirth, Manitoba married Carrie Mae Johnson (1905-1981). George & Carrie got married in Grentna, Manitoba 20 Jul 1923. I don't know where or when George Harold Beirnes died, but it would have been before 1953 because his wife Carrie is listed as a Widow in the Vancouver Voters List. Carrie Mae died at Richmond General Hospital, BC 14 Jul 1981.

My husband is related to Carrie Mae Johnson & her family.

You had made some inquiries about a Florence Beirnes being committed to Essondale / Riverview Hospital. Here's an interesting link that'll give you all sorts of information:

The cemetery was originally known as the Essondale Cemetery; it opened in 1958. The cemetery was renamed the Riverview Hospital Cemetery in 1965. The burial grounds were established for patients who died and had no family, or whose family members requested they be interred at the site. Prior to 1958, deceased patients whose families did not look after funeral arrangements were buried in unmarked graves in Fraser Cemetery in New Westminster, until early 1920. - snip

Hi Karen

I'm a second cousin of George Harold Beirnes. I have a death year of 1947 for him, but not the month or day. He joined the army on Sept 10, 1915. His regimental number was 425524.
George is interred in the Rossburn Community Cemetery in Rossburn Manitoba, so I expect he died in or near Rossburn. On the 1921 census he was working as a clerk in a law office there.

If you want to exchange info on the Beirnes family, I can be reached at jimbob017@sympatico.ca
