I am looking for information about MOISE BOURGEOIS of St-Celestin, Quebec, who came to the Cranbrook area in 1906 and established with his family there. Back in St-Celestin, he was a baker.
He was married to PARMELIE MORIN also of St-Celestin, Que. and when they moved to BC they came with their family. Their children were named: Juliette, Albertine, Ernestine, Antonio, Henri, Orphyre (or Orphire) Charles and they had a son PAUL who was born here in BC probably in 1911-1912.
Any information will be greatly appreciated. Moise Bourgeois was my great grandfather and I would like to find out more about him and this family. All I know is that when he moved to BC he bought a large area and was raising lamb.

LITTLER & BAYBUTT connections with CPR Boarding House ~ Crowsnest BC

Following are my relatives who were proprietors of the CPR Boarding House in Crowsnest BC between approximately 1922 or so to abt 1959.

1] Thomas BAYBUTT & Margaret (nee FARRIMOND) 1922-1926 /

Tom was killed in a terrible car crash that spared his wife Maggie and son Henry. Maggie later married Frank CAMINITTI and they lived in Cranbrook for many years.

2] Matthew LITTLER & Alice (nee FARRIMOND, sis of Maggie) abt 1926-late 1940's.

Matt, once upon a time a pit boss and who once worked the Bankhead Mine AB & Alice semi-retired when their son Henry LITTLER & wife Ada (nee THOMASON) took over, staying there til abt 1960ish.

3] Henry & Ada moved to Cranbrook once the Boarding House closed down and he worked for several years at the Cranbrook Golf Coure. They lived next door to Agnes PHILIPS (d/o Harry & Mary Alice BROWN) and down the street (8th Ave South) from Frank & Maggie CAMINITT and next door to a lady with a wonderful veggie garden which she always shared ~ Pat BROAD.

I would love to hear more about the CPR Boarding House and its history as well as from anyone who may have known any of these people.

Four Fernie Men Killed, May 10, 1917

Fernie Free Press, British Columbia, May 10, 1917

FOUR FERNIE MEN KILLED - Fernie was hit hard in the casualty list this week, there being two men reported killed and one wounded.

Thomas Patrick Shields, who went overseas with the 54th, gave his life for his country on May 3. Deceased, who leaves a wife and family here, was well known in football circles.

On Monday, Mr and Mrs Harry Dunlap received a dispatch saying that their son Angus had made the great sacrifice. Angus was a real Fernie boy, having grown up from childhood here, and his parents have the heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends.

Mr W.R. Wilson received word on Tuesday that his son, Lieut. Bishop Wilson, had been wounded. Lieut. Wilson, who is connected with the flying corps, has been on the fighting front for the past two months and his daily routine was to make a 2 1/2 hour scouting trip over the enemy's lines. No particulars have yet been received.

Alex Ferguson, who formerly worked here for George Barton, and enlisted with a Vancouver Regiment, is also reported as killed.

Mrs George Evans received a letter last week from an officer in France stating that her husband had been killed in action. She had received no official notice from Ottawa and the news was a terrible shock. Deceased, who leaves three small children, enlisted with the 54th and has been on the fighting line for nearly a year.

Peter Buzan; Harold Swan

From "The Cominco Magazine" April 1943
Two deaths at the Mine

Two tragic accidents occurred at the Sullivan Mine on March 18, bringing death to two well-known and respected employees of the mine.

Peter Buzan, barman, was working on a 30-foot ladder when a fall of rock broke one of the guy-wires leading from his ladder. He was thrown from the ladder, fracturing his skull. Born in Austria, Peter was an old-timer around the mine, having worked for the Company since 1926. He is survived by his wife, and four daughters Mildred, Pearl, Edith and Patricia. Mildred is stationed with the air force in Toronto, while the youngest daughter, Patricia is attending school here.

Harold Swan - amiably called "Dutch" by his many friends - was killed two hours later when he fell down a raise, fracturing his skull. Born in Slocan City in 1904, he worked in Slocan, Trail and Nelson before coming to Kimberley in 1936. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife; a brother, Clifford of Kimberley; and his father Mayor Peter Swan of Slocan City.

Both men were well-respected citizens of the community and their fellow workers extend to the bereaved ones their sincere sympathy.

James Fulton

From "The Cominco Magazine" Jan 1942.
JAMES FULTON MOURNED
It is with deep regret that the death is recorded of James Fulton, barman, who was instantly killed at the Sullivan Mine on the morning of November 17, 1941. The accident also brought serious injury to Anton Kadin, Jim's partner.

Jim was born in 1906 at Wardner, BC and came to reside in Kimberley in 1923. He started working with the Company in 1925 and in 1934,was married to Miss Maisie Montieth who was a member of the teaching staff of Kimberley School. Beside his wife, he leaves to mourn his death, a small son, Lorne Monteith, age five, an infant daughter Sheila Kathleen, age two, two brothers, William, who is with the Pay Office staff, and Robert, of Sommers, Montana, a sister Mrs. Mansfield of Billings, Montana and a nephew, Bob, who resides in Kimberley.

Jim was a keen and active sportsman. He took part in curling during the winter and was one of the most active and enthusiastic members of the Kimberley Rod & Gun Club. It was through the efforts of Jim and Alan Bond that the famous "Elephant Shoot" held last September was a sucess and this same spirit was shown in all his activities. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Jim.

His untimely passing cast a deep shadow over the entire community and through this humble medium may the sympathies of his fellow workmen and partners of the Sullivan Mine and Concentrator be extended to Mrs. Fulton, the children, and all bereaved relatives and friends.

From "The Cominco Magazine" April 1942
OBITUARY
Two fatal accidents have marred an excellent safety record at Sullivan Mine and have taken the lives of two well-liked young men.

On March 10, Oiva Saatela, well known in both Kimberley and Rossland, was killed. Oiva was born in the Golden City in 1915 and came to Kimberley when his father, John Saatela, was transferred to the Sullivan mine. He finished his schooling in Kimberley and commenced work with the Company in September, 1933. In June, 1937, Oiva married Elizabeth Doolan of Cranbrook and leaves two small daughters, Sandra, aged four and Audrey who will be two years old in August. As well as his wife and daughters, he leaves to mourn his loss his mother and sister in Vancouver, and a sister in Canmore, Alberta. The men from Sullivan Mine extend their sympathy in this untimely death to his wife, his children, mother and sisters.

On March 21, Leonard Hystead was killed. Len was born at Redcliff, Alberta, on December 24, 1923 and received his schooling at the Kimberley Public School and Kimberley High School, where he was an honour student. He was a keen sportsman, excelling in baseball and hockey and was selected to play on the team through all stages from Pee Wee hockey to Juvenile. This year, on the Juvenile team, he played excellent hocky. He started to work for the Company only last fall.
Len leaves to mourn his loss, his mother and his step-father, Archie Lilley, mucker boss at the north end of the 3900-foot level, a sister in Calgary and two small sisters at home. His fellow students and all the workmen of the Kimberley district as well as lovers of good, clean sport, join in offering their sympathy to the bereaved family.

They will be greatly missed.

From "The Cominco Magazine" May 1943
Flying Officer Don Gill, one of the Sullivan Mine's many employees who have enlisted to fight for freedom, was reported missing over enemy territory after having led a successful bomber attack on an enemy airfield in France last November.

Youngest son of the late Tom Gill and Mrs. Gill of Cranbrook, he will be remembered for his active interest in basketball, swimming and diving at McDougal pool, and in first aid competitions. He was a member of Jock McConnachie's first aid team which won with a perfect score in Fernie. During this competition, Don wore a full beard, adding a bit of humour to an otherwise serious exhibition.

Even before enlisting in October, 1940, Don was an enthusiastic airman with one hundred hours to his credit.

According to information received by the family through the Red Cross, he lies buried in Haupertus cemetery in Northern France.

Brother Carl, eldest son of the Gill boys, was well-known Down North where he flew Company "box-cars" over the northern wilderness. For many years a member of Kimberley and Trail hockey and basketball teams, he was killed in a tragic crash at Camp Borden in 1931.

Three bothers, Otto in Yellowknife, Arthur in Trail and Allan at the Sullivan mine, survive.

From "The Cominco Magazine" July 1943

News of the death of George Lindsay, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lindsay of Kimberley, has brought home once again the realization of the real tragedy and incalculable loss which the war is bringing to our district and to all of Canada.
George was 20 years of age and one of Kimberley's outstanding young citizens. Excelling in sports, Lietenant-Colonel of the cadets during his last school year, a favourite among his fellow workers at the mine and one of the most popular young men in the East Kootenay, he leaves a gap in Canada's future that can never be properly filled by those whose fortune it will be to carry on.
To Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay, sisters Mary and Eleanor and brother Edgar, the Consolidated family extends inadequate but heartfelt sympathy in their loss of a fine son and brother. He gave his life to join that host of gallant young Canadians who were willing to make the supreme sacrifice in order that democracy should not perish in our generation.

He returned to the Sullivan six months later and was a popular figure underground until 1939 when he was stricken with arthritis.
During the past year, Mr. & Mrs. McLeish had been operating a small grocery store in Happy Valley. Rolf was operating a mucking machine when a large slab of rock fell from the wall behind him, struck him on the head and shoulders and killed him. He was born in Norway in 1914 and is survived by his wife Irene in Kimberley, and his parents in Nelson.
During the war he served in the army as a private and soon after his discharge joined forces with the Consolidated in August 28th of this year.
From "The Cominco Magazine" March 1947
The men at the Sullivan concentrator and the residents of the village of Chapman Camp were saddened last month on learning of the passing of John Ellis on January 18.
Mr. Ellis has been a resident of Chapman Camp since 1929 and since that time has become a highly respected and valued member of the community. John was born in Scotland but came to this country in 1920. He entered the service of the Consolidated in the same year and at Trail, Moyie and Kimberley has worked continuously ever since.
John was a quiet man. He was one of those who deserved the title "salt of the earth". He was a good neighbour. In a village of experts, he was acknowledged as one of it's best gardeners, and his lot on the townsite was a pleasure to see in the summertime. It was neat, it was tidy; and showed the results of many hours painstaking work performed after shift in the mill. To men like John Ellis, who contribute that essence of character so essential in the building up of worthwhile communities, it is hard to say "good-bye".
To Mrs. Ellis, Cominco expresses its profound sympathy on her tragic loss.

From "The Cominco Magazine" March 1947
G. F. Chapman Dies.

The districts of East and West Kootenay, with which he had had such an intimate connection for over 40 years, mourned the death last month of Mr. Fred Chapman. He had been associated with the Consolidated for 44 years, having entered the service of the Company in 1902. He started work that year with the Canadian smelting works at the age of 16 in the machine shop in Trail. After intensive training in drafting and construction engineering he later became construction superintendant for the company during the First World War. He was responsible for the construction of the Sullivan Concentrator and the village of Chapman Camp was named in his honour.
In 1926 he entered the services of West Kootenay Power and Light Company and had charge of construction of the dams at Upper and Lower Bonnington, Goat River and other developments in the Kootenays.
During his boyhood he had been active in musical circles and had at one time led the Trail band and symphony orchestra. In December of last year he was honoured at a banquet at which the officials of the Consolidated and his many friends gathered to wish him well on his retirement. On that occasion mr. Diamond, Vice-President and General manager of the Company paid him tribute in these words - "He has spent all his working life here and he is as much a part of this district as are the very hills that are about us, and is as much a part of the country as the smelter smoke".
He was a member of the Scottish Rite Kootenay lodge of Perfection and of the Shriners.
Surviving are Mrs. Chapman who resides in Nelson, and a daughter, Mrs Sturgess of Bridge River, and his aged mother and one sister in Trail, and one sister, Mrs. S. Goy, in New Westminster. To them Cominco extends its sympathy in their bereavment.
