BECK or STUDER family, Kelowna, early 1900s

My gr-grandmother, Saloma Helena STUDER b 1859, left photos of her several visits with a family in Kelowna - according to the back of the photos. They were taken about 1910-20. The family lived on a farm and grew "Okanagan oranges" (pumpkins).

Though no names were listed, these folks were undoubtedly her relatives - so the family name/maiden name would mostly likely have been BECK or STUDER.

I'm hoping an older man in the photo was one of her brothers (could be Jacob STUDER, b. ca 1855 in Wisconsin), and that the name might ring a bell with someone with Kelowna ancestry.

In every photo, he's standing beside a woman who is likely either his married daughter (or younger wife .. hard to guess her age). And there's always a young girl, b. ca 1900 (daughter? granddaughter?). In one family group photo there's a boy about her age, and in another two young men at least ten years older, so b. ca 1890.

Even as I write this I realize how unlikely it is to make a connection with such faint clues. But I'll put it out there anyway and hope the genealogy Gods are smiling...
John SOROCHINSKI and wife Annie LASHUK of Vernon, BC

John SOROCHINSKI (died in Vernon BC) was married to Annie LASHUK. I am trying to learn more about Annie in hopes of finding out if LASHUK is her maiden name or if that was from a possible first husband. If from a first husband what was her name?

Here is what I know about the couple:

John SOROCHINSKI, born 14 Dec 1886 in Poland, died 06 Aug 1983 in Vernon, BC. His parents on the death registration is listed as Nicholas SOROCHINSKI, mother was listed as not known. John's wife was listed as "Annie LASHUK". John was cremated - no burial place listed on the death registration.

Annie is listed in the Vernon city directory up until and including 1992, therefore she will not appear in the BC Archives Death Index. After that I assume she either passed away or moved into a nursing home to not appear in the City Directory. Since John was 96 years old when he passed away in 1983 and Annie was known to be alive in 1991-2 I believe she was quite a few years younger than John so could have been born in the very early 1900's.

Does any of this sound familiar? Is LASHUK Annie's maiden name was it from a first marriage?
Looking for connections from Scotland to Canada of my grandfather, Herbert Allan Ward Guild.

Born to Alexander Guild and Joanna/Johana Yeaman Webster Guild 6 March 1888 in Forfar, Scotland; died Vancouver, BC 30 Jan 1948.

Herbert, or Bert, came to Canada via Glasgow-Halifax 30 Mar 1907. Might have traveled with brothers Alexander and Norman to Moosejaw.

Herbert married Lydia Lindberg 20 Dec 1915 in Kamploops; three daughters born in Kamloops, Jean, twins Vera and Viola and my father, Douglas, born in Merritt 31 Dec 1920. Family moved to Vancouver sometime in 1920's. Butcher by trade, also musician/teacher of violin.

I've connected the family to Canada in 1907, back to Forfar circa 1800, and from my dad's move to the State's in 1946, but have very little information between 1907 and 1946.

Familiar to anyone?

Thanks,

Bob Guild

The second oldest is Ruth(Dunston or Dunstan)
I also know that James did marry a woman by the name of Mary V Ogloff and they had two children.
More on Harris Family of Vernon, BC

My grandfather, James William Blance, was adopted by Edwin and Harriet Harris and the family initially lived in St. Thomas, Ontario up until 1888 when they moved to Vancouver, BC. Besides my grandfather, the Harris' had a natural daughter named Ethel Edith M Harris, who had been born to them in 1873 in Reading, England prior to the family's emigration to Canada in 1874. They adopted my grandfather in August of 1884 after he and his 4 siblings had been sent via the Quarrier Homes in Scotland to the Marchmont Home in Belleville, Ontario. James was only 3 years old when he arrived in Canada in June of 1884. Within a few years of arriving in Vancouver, Harriet Harris died. In May of 1892, Edwin Harris married Elizabeth Doe and moved to Vernon, BC. Around this same time, Ethel married a John MacKintosh and moved to Nova Scotia where their firstborn, John Harris MacKintosh was born in Halifax Oct 27, 1893. Edwin and Elizabeth went on to have the following children: Annie Hilda who died in infancy Sept 2, 1893, Letitia Elsie born Feb 6, 1895 ( later married Cyril Parkhurst and descendants appear to still be living in the Vancouver area ), Edgar Lambert Harris born March 16, 1898, and Albert Edwin Barton Harris born Sept 12, 1901 ( went by Barton or Bart Harris and died in Sacramento, CA in 1983 ). After my grandfather was told his true origins as a young man, there was a split between him and the Harris family and I am trying hard to re-connect with any living descendants of Edwin Harris. Could someone please send me a copy of the following death certificate? Edgar Lambert Harris died January 18, 1965 in Powell River, BC Reg# 1965-09-002803, BCA # B13270, GSU # 2033723. It would be very much appreciated. I also want to thank Sheila Miller for all her previous help to me !

Arnold family, Vernon

My late father received a letter from a Cathy Arnold in 1942 when he was in p.o.w. camp in Germany. In it Cathy is still at secondary school and mentions her sister, Mona, and brother, Alex. At that time their address was a post box in Vernon.
Her mother would probably be my father's cousin and her maiden name could have been Barnes or Collin. She would have been born in Berwickshire, Scotland c1880's
This is a pretty long shot as I don't have any more clues to go by but I am interesting in finding out about my grandmother/grandfather's siblings.
I have checked the B.C. marriages and deaths but these gave me no more clues.
Any advice on this would be most welcome.

Missing White Family member

My Uncle - Peter Lawrence White - son of Janet and Thomas White all of Princeton BC, fathered a child when he was about 16 years of age. Peter White was born 1927 in Princeton and died 1974 also in Princeton. This means the child would have been born about 1943. He did not marry the person who gave birth to the male child so we do not even know if this child's last name is or was "White". This summer (2007) we will be holding a second family reunion and we would like to get in touch with this family member. He has a number of brothers and a sister that would like to meet him. If anyone knows someone with this story - please tell them about this article and ask them to write to me. I am a first cousin to this person.

I would like to find information on Patenaude families in British Columbia. I know Edgar "Rusty" Patenaude, the hockey player was born in BC. There must be some Patenaudes around still. I would like to tie them in to the rest of the Patenaude families.

BOVEE family of Vernon B.C.

I'm researching the Manford/Monford (1858-1942) and Orbie?Obie O (1861-1930) BOVEE families. Both were born in Iowa and moved to Oregon. They both married in Umatilla Co Oregon but I've not been able to find them since that time. Just recently I was sent information that 2 of the children of "Orbie" were born near Vernon B.C. Canada.

Louis Grant BOVEE was born near Vernon, B.C. and went to Wenatchee WA in 1920.

Arthur Franklin BOVEE born in 1896 in Vernon, BC - Canada -- his parents were listed as early residents of the Vernon area. He too went to Wenatchee WA.

Other siblings include:
Eloise Mabel BOVEE Born: 9 May 1889
Harriet Angeline BOVEE Born: 14 Jun 1891
Hazel May BOVEE Born: 6 Oct 1899
Elsie Ellen BOVEE Born: 27 Jun 1902, Died: 19 Apr 1905
Florence Halle BOVEE
Obie Claud BOVEE

I would think it possible that Orbie BOVEE's brother, Manford might also have gone to B.C. but I've not been able to find anything on him or any of his child. I am particularly interested to learn where Manford and Orbie BOVEE died and are buried as well as anything about their life in Vernon. If anyone can point in me in a direction I would be most greatful.
Susan Patt

I just found a relative in the 1901 census at Fairview (near Oliver, BC). Richard Russell was a mine manager, and his family (wife and two young sons) was joined in their home by ten lodgers. I believe he located to Fairview about 1898 from Hamilton, Ontario and lived in BC for a number of years before returning to Ontario by 1910.
What records are available for the former town of Fairview? Is there any way of finding out if the Russell family stayed in Fairview or moved around?

The family of Thomas P. and Janet White are having a family reunion in Princeton this coming summer. They are the parents of May, Violet, Winnifred, Nora, Florence (Dot), Tom and Peter White. (Harringtons, Alexanders, Robins, Moffetts, Elys, Whites). I have been told that my uncle - Peter Lawrence White (born about 1927 - died Aug. 16, 1974) fathered a child when he was about 17 yrs. of age. We do not know who the mother of this child is. If you know who you are (child -now adult) you have many brothers and sisters who would like to meet you and are hoping we can locate you to come to the family reunion. Would anyone reading this and knowing anything about it please contact me. Please e-mail me at ogopogo_lake@hotmail.com ASAP Thank you ever so much.

Robert M. WHITECOTTON m. Emma B. HUMPHREY, 10 October 1888, Taylor Co, IA

Emma Belle Humphrey (b. 30 December 1871, d. 14 September 1937) is my great-aunt. She married Robert Milton Whitecotton (b. 22 May 1865, d. 27 February 1940) on 10 October 1888 in Taylor Co, Iowa. Both died, and are buried in Vernon Cemetery, in Vernon, BC.
I would like to connect with persons who have additional information on the Whitecotton family and their descendants. I have some information on family members who remained in Iowa, but little information on the family members who moved to British Columbia.
