Thomas Richard Bennetts death certificate says he was born 18 Feb 1882 (as opposed to 1885 in Australian records). He came to Salmon Arm in 1919 after the war and engaged in mixed farming until 1938. The obituary does not mention any other occupation. I don't know anything about jailers but I'm assuming they needed to be sherrifs or other police. Jailers sound more like something from the wild west days. He also fought in the Boer War. His attestation papers for WWI are on Ancestry.
