Does anyone have access to Vancouver BC obituaries in 1953? I checked online and the dates I'm looking for in 1953 are missing. I'm looking for the obit for Verda Abery and her daughter Verda M. Abery. They died in a car crash on Oct. 16th in Mount Vernon, Skagit, Washington. I found an article mentioning the accident but no obit. Any help would be appreciated.

Kris

Hi Kathleen Louise

I was wondering if there were any other relatives listed in the obit. She married a James George Abery in 1928 but from what I can find he died in 1956 in Winnipeg (or at least that's what the records indicate). In some records she's listed as a widow as early as 1940.

The article about the car crash didn't mention a husband, other relatives or where she and the daughter were buried. That's why I was hoping to find the obit. I did find the Vancouver Sun online for Oct. 17, 1953 but it appears that Oct. 18th, 19th and 20th weren't filmed.

A lot of women in those days who were divorced or whose husbands had left them would list themselves as widowed.

Here is the clipping from the Vancouver Sun on 18 October 1953. According to it Verda and Maureen were buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery which is at 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby, BC V5G 3M1, telephone: 604-299-7720. You could write or phone them to see if they can provide any further information.

The articles say that Verda was known as "Pat" and Maureen as "Bunny". Verda had no other children. It says she was survived by her sisters Mrs Dorothy Bradley and Mrs E Kerdack (which should read Keroack) and two nieces Mrs R G Smalley and Mrs L G Gough.

I used that information and what you provided to determine the following:

Verda "Pat" Haines married Thomas Howard Moffat on 26 February 1908 in Winnipeg. I didn't find any children for them. I did not find a death record for Thomas so they may have divorced.
Verda then married James George Abery on 10 September 1928 in Winnipeg and they had Verda Maureen "Bunny" around 1930. James George Abery died in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1956 so he and Verda were either separated or divorced - I couldn't find an obituary for him.

You may already have all the following, but just in case.

Verda's parents were William Burdon Haines, born 9 November 1852 in Ontario and died 23 August 1924 in Winnipeg. He first married Margret Wanchob who died of TB in December 1878 shortly after giving birth to their son Franklin. He then married Mary McCrae who was born in Ontario on 25 January 1868 and died in Winnipeg sometime between 1916 and 1921. They had five children:

1. Verda Haines

2. Dorothy Haines born 17 March 1892 in Winnipeg and died 5 June 1973 in Vancouver. She first married Herman Nelson on 27 Mary 1912 in Winnipeg. She married George Green Bradley on 23 December 1925 in Winnipeg. They had a daughter Patricia Bradley. Patricia first married Lawrence Gordon Gough and they had three children, Harry, Diane and Laurence. Patricia and Lawrence divorced and she married George Hallinan. Patricia died 9 July 2004 and her obituary in the Vancouver Sun reads:

"HALLINAN, Patricia Beloved Mother and Grandmother passed away peacefully July 9, 2004 while visiting with the animals and birds she cared so much about. Pat was predeceased by her husband George. Mom will be forever missed and always remembered by her son and daughter-in-law Harry and Brenda Gough, daughter Diana, grandchildren Cydney, Jennifer, Tyler, Erin, her extended family Philips (Rita) Hallinan, Sheilagh (Irv) Watrich. Memorial Service will be held at Mount Seymour United Church on Thursday, July 15, 2004 at 2:00 p.m."

3. Jessie Eileen Haines born 27 March 1894 in Winnipeg and died 21 December 1979 in West Vancouver. Jessie married Emile David Keroack on 9 April 1917 in St Boniface, Manitoba. They divorced 24 December 1942. On the 1921 census it shows they had a daughter Ruth Irene Keroack born about 1913, four years before they married. I believe their "daughter" was actually Jessie's youngest sister Ruth (see Number 5). Jessie then married Arthur Trevor Stern who was almost 20 years younger than she was. Ruth Irene Keroack married Reginal Gunton Smalley on 19 May 1936 in Vancouver. Reginal died in 1958 and Ruth remarried someone named Crickmay.

4. Robert McCrae Haines was born 5 January 1896 in Winnipeg and died 29 January 1950 in Bralorne, BC. He doesn't appear to have married. Her served in the First World War.

5. Ruth Irene Haines was born about 1913 in Winnipeg. Her dad was living alone in the 1921 census so I figured Ruth may have gone to live with one of her sisters. Then I looked at the 1921 census for Jessie Haines Keroack and Emile Keroack and it shows Ruth as their daughter. Ruth married Reginal Gunton Smalley on 19 May 1936 in Vancouver. Reginal died in 1958 and Ruth remarried someone named Crickmay.

I'm attaching a few documents. Hope this is of some help.

Cheers,

Soosi

OMG thank you SO much!!! This is a lot of great information.

As you said there must have been a divorce at some point otherwise she would be considered a bigamist. All around its a rather sad family story. Both mother (Verda) and daughter (Verda Maureen) were killed in a car crash in Washington State. I only found the father James George Abery a few weeks ago. His father Rev. James Abery was my great great uncle. I'd searched for years for him and it turns out he was listed under Abrey.
Thanks again for the help. Its much appreciated
