Hi, I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me find out about a man named Alec/Alex who travelled to Germany with other Bella Coola Natives in the lat 1800's to perform for Europeans. He's in books and a movie, but just general stuff. A photo of him (and another of an unknow old woman) has been handed down in my husbands family for over 80 years, but the story has changed many times.

Thanks
Kelly

In 1885, Adrian Jacobsen, a Norwegian artefact collector, brought nine Bella Coola (Nuxalk) Indians from the west coast of Canada to Germany to showcase them in Carl Hagenbeck’s ethnological tours in Hamburg. From there, they toured 22 German cities - among them Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Breslau, Eberfeld, Zwickau, Erfurt, Aachen, and Cologne - where they performed their traditional dances and songs.

Thanks for your reply stella. However, these are where it seems to stop. I'm interested in what he did before he went to Germany, but those guys had so many names that they are difficult to follow sometimes. I have even noticed errors in some of the pictures in national museam of canada, where the wrong names are with pictures. Kliff Copas and Clayton Mack knew him. I found his sons name through some digging. He was a pretty interesting guy and students still learn about him because he made a huge contribution to traditional music and dance.

Thanks a bunch,
Kelly
