Hi Bo, I just read the Coates bio and it says Allen married Selma Stohl, but remarried to Isabel McLachlan. It also says he moved to B.C. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=1541 The bio starts on page 90, but the info is on page 91. Wonder what happened to Selma?? Butch

Yes, I was aware of this book, have a copy of it at home. What we (me and my friend) wish is to know more about descendants of Selma Lofstrom and Walfred Stohl - i.e. "living relatives", but how ot get that information? Did everyone remain in Canada? Would be grateful if you can point me in any direction.
Regards,
Bo (board volunteer, Sweden)

Yes, I'm still working on them. Another online db has Alexander's name as James Alexander, with the death date I have--I accepted the information as the source was a descendent of Agnes. However that source may have identified the wrong person, as they have the name as James Alexander--which is likely wrong, as Alexander had a younger brother named James.

This death record seems to be the right Lena:
Vital Event Death Registration
Name: Lenah Mcconnell
Event Date: 1914 10 5 (Yr/Mo/Day)
Age: 56
Gender: female
Event Place: New Westminster
Reg. Number: 1914-09-090366
B.C. Archives Microfilm Number: B13091
GSU Microfilm Number: 1927119

Sister Eleanor Maud also seems to have died in BC during Oct 1914. Was that the year of the 'flu epidemic?

I believe I got Burns as a last name from one of Martha's descendants, who only knew her as Annie Burns. So Stella's theory is probably spot on.

If either of you is a descendant, could we share more info? Privately? Thanks.

I am trying to find out what happened to Alice Annie McConnell. I belive she first married an Albert Bowling, who took suddenly ill and died in Fernie BC in 1935. Did she marry H. Burns after that time? Thanks for anything you can help me with. Ruth

My gr gr granddad was Nathanial[Dan] Schincke. My gen info came from a collaboration of data collected by various family members. One thing that is consistently clear is that John Schincke was married to Charlotte Litke [sometimes spelled Leudke]. Names were often misspelt on records and handwriting is often illegible; but there was consistency in Litke...not Silke....never heard of Silke before.
They had 15 children. The eldest, Reka, was born in Prussia, the next 10 were born in Canada, the 4 youngest were born in Nebraska.
John Schincke is buried in Olympia, Washington and Charlotte in Eugene, Oregon. Both they, and some of their children were fairly nomadic roaming over a great part of the USA & Canada....and were an important part of pioneering in and around Edmonton, Alberta.
Considering how this family loved to wander, it's not surprising to hear about the 2 Grunke/Shincke couples coming to Cuming county at the same time from 2 different directions. Cuming county appears to be a pivitol location for the Schinkes.
Are these families part of your tree? If you would like more info I would be happy to share what I have. Let me know:)

I checked on the Schinke marriages in Cuming County when I was in Lincoln, Nebraska the last time, and found the following:

Hermin Schinke married Angelina Miles on 23 Feb 1876. Hermin was born in Canada on 20 Oct 1854, the son of John Schinke and Charlote Silke. Angelina was born in Pennsylvania on 17 Sep 1857, the daughter of Samuel MIles and Elizabeth Leanik or Seanik.

Nathaniel Schinke married Mary Reeson on 7 Nov 1878. Nathaniel was born in Canada on 5 Sep 1857, son of John Schinke and Charlotte Silke. Mary was born in Will County, IL 11 Aug 1853 daughter of Samuel Reeson and Harriet Maddock.

Charles Kolterman married Elizabeth Schinke on 4 Jan 1876. Charles was born in Prussia on 25 Apr 1854, son of Wm. Kolterman and Wilhelmina Kryger. Elizabeth was born in Canada 5 Feb 1856, daughter of John Schinke and Charlottel Sutke (the u has an umlaut above it).

There are two families in Cuming County, both with the husband's last name Grunke/Grinke and the wife, Schinke/Schunke. One group coming from Wisconsin and the other from Canada - both about the same time. I'm convinced they are connected, perhaps the husbands are brothers or cousins and the wives, the same. Families from the same areas of Germany were so intermarried, that the 'coincidence' of two so similar named families arriving from two different areas to the same small town in Nebraska at the same time must be connected, though it may take a trip to Germany to sort it all out.

SATHER, 10 Dec 1882 - 16 Apr 1923
burial in the Sardis Lutheran cemetery at Czar.

Then the AGS Alberta Homestead Index lists 6 for a Lars P and 9 For Inger Sather.
Hi Dave, I've no relation to the Gosling ancestor you describe here, but I thought I might be able to help.

The address you've provided sounds like it is from the City of Strathcona (not to be confused with the present-day County of Strathcona). The City of Strathcona was incorporated into the City of Edmonton in 1912. I checked in the City of Edmonton Henderson Directories, and there is indeed a Sydney C Gosling, city claim agent, residing at the listed address from 1921.

The City of Edmonton Henderson Directories are available online as part of the Peel Prairie Provinces collection found here:

http://peel.library.ualberta.ca/bibliography/2962.html

In the later years, there is a wife named Clara listed in the directory.

There is also a mention of Clara May Gosling here:

http://www.abheritage.ca/flyboys/homefront/deaths_rcaf_02.ht...

I also found an entry in this index:

http://www.epl.ca/edmonton-obituaries

I sometimes go to Edmonton for research, and could obtain the newspaper microfilm printouts next time I go if you'd like.

An ancestor of mine, James Phillip Collins visited Canada in 1920 (Edmononton).... and again in 1931, arriving at Quebec, 29th May on "Duchess of Bedford",purpose of visit being:
"to visit son-in-law, Mr Charles Gosling of 9318 81st Avenue, Strathcona, Alberta"
Anyone out there with any info on Charles Gosling of Strathcona, I know from this that he married a female Collins from England, but trying to find which one, most likely are Florence Mary or Annie Rebecca.
I have quite a lot on their ancestry, would like to find out how they fared in Canada,
thanks,
Dave

I'm sorry...I was unable to find an obituary for James Dodds. I checked the Edmonton Journal from July 7 to 31, 1999 and the Edmonton Sun from July 18 to 31, 1999. It may be possible that an obituary was printed in the local paper of Fort Saskatchewan.

Good luck,

Shirley
