Looking for info on Christopher Leslie Chadwick and his wife Sarah (nee Graham) who lived in Cooking Lake, Alberta from 1910ish until mid-1920s. They had 7 children born in the area: Nelly, Annie (?), Clara, Janet & Edna (twins), and Anna & Arthur (twins). Sarah died in childbirth in 1922, the kids were split up after that.

Any info would be much appreciated.

The Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society does list those names; but there are these.

Arthur CHADWICK, - 28 Nov 1941 (Pte. 101 & 9 Batt. CEF)
buried in The Edmonton 7 ave Cemetery.

Leslie CHADWICK, 1894 - 23 Sep 1982
Sarah Ann CHADWICK, 1897 - 30 Jun 1979
both buried next to each other in the Red Deer cemetery.

And there are 8 other CHADWICK burials in the Cooking Lake Cemetery. Would they be related?

And you can find Chadwick Homesteads near Cooking Lake at Township 51 and Range 22 - W4 on this AGS site.

Thanks for the info Peter. That is the correct Leslie Chadwick, Sarah Ann was his second wife, his first wife Sarah (Elizabeth?) died in 1922.

Is Nov 1941 the date of death for the Arthur you listed? My Arthur did serve in WWII and lived in Edmonton after the war, but didn't die until the 1980s or 90s. His wife Vera is still living there.

I found the homestead records. Looks like Leslie's brother Leon had the homestead next to him.

Can you tell me the other Chadwick names in the Cooking Lake cemetery? Perhaps it is Leon's family?

I am really trying to track down the other children (Annie, Janet, Clara and Edna). The kids were all put in an orphanage after their mother died, then Leslie came back for Nellie, Anna and Arthur, remarried and had 2 more children (Jean and George). We have no idea what happened to the other four kids from his first marriage.

Thanks for the help.

Yes that date of Arthur CHADWICK - 28 Nov 1941 must be correct. That info comes from the headstone. The records say he was buried 2 Dec 1941 and the plot was paid for by the Soldiers section.

Hi Sherri,
I noticed your post on Ancestry last night regarding Leslie Chadwick and his family. His first wife was Hannah Graham (not Sarah Graham) who was my great great aunt. You can find them on the 1921 census, in Alberta, district Strathcona, sub-district 30 (page 5). Here it shows Leslie, his wife Hannah and their children Clara, Annie and Nellie.

I am also curious about this family and what became of them after Hannah died. Years ago, my grandmother told me this:

Hannah was married to an American, last name Chadwick. They had two sets of twins and at least two single birth children. After Hannah died in childbirth, her mother (Annie Graham) took 3 of the girls and the others went back to the US with their father. The 3 girls that stayed were May (born abt 1913, and twins Edna and Elsie born abt 1921) - this is according to my grandmother. The girls were then raised by sisters of Hannah - Clara (my great grandmother) and Janet. May lived in Washago, Ontario, Edna in Quebec and Elsie in Lindsay, Ontario.

We have never known anything about any of the other children. We also aren't sure of the date of Hannah's death. If she had 7 children, and on the 1921 census only had 3, she couldn't have died in 1922.

Have you ever come across documents to confirm the date of Hannah's death, the names of all the children, and which ones were the twins? My mother did know May, Edna and Elsie personally as a child.

Thanks in advance if you can shed some light on this family!

Hi Sherri,

My name is Barbara Todd, maiden name Mann and Edna was my mother who passed away in 1969 at the age of 49. About 16 years ago or so, I traveled to Edmonton to visit one of my father's brothers and while I was there, visited South Cooking Lake where mom was born. I was fortunate to come across a hard cover book depicting the last 100 years of S. Cooking Lake. There is a section for Christopher Chadwick and some of his children and their wives but not a great deal. Very little is mentioned regarding Leslie Chadwick except for the children he had with his last wife. My grandmother's name is not there but the children's names are. Clara May, Annie, Nellie (who died young), Edna (my mom), Elsie (mom's twin sister) then known as Janet, Hannah and Arthur (twins). I would be happy to hear from you.

Barbie!!!

What a surprise to hear from you! I am Oscar and Barb's granddaughter, Gord and Judy's daughter. You came to my wedding in 1997 when you were visiting in Ontario.

My sister Tracy and I have been in touch with Sherri for a few weeks now, trying to help her and her grandmother piece together what happened to May, Edna and Elsie. I'm so glad you have come to the rescue. I hope you can fill in some blanks for all of us.

Coincidentally, Tracy and I just sent you a letter a couple of weeks ago, to the return address we found on a letter you had sent to our grandparents. We included quite a few photos of your Mom that we found in Grandma's boxes. I'm not sure if you're still living at that address. If not, the letter will be returned to me and now that I've found you, I can send it out to you again.

I'm so happy to hear from you! You are welcome to email me directly if you would like to. We have so many questions! terripretty@i-zoom.net
