Alex McConnell & Lena Marlin family

I've tracked this family through Ontario--Alex was a gg-uncle of mine. In 1906 and 1911, they were in Strathcona Dist--and I have no idea what happened to them after that.

I have complete names and birth information, but not much else.

Can anyone help me find Alberta records?

Except for Martha, I have no idea of whether any of the children married, nor whom. The sons served in the first world war, and were still in the Edmonton area at that time. I'd guess Agnes and Helen married (or died) before 1906 in AB, and Alice and Pearl married (or died) between 1906 and 1911.

McConnell Alex Ireland Feb 18 1847
McConnell Lena (Marlin) ON May 15 1855

McConnell Martha Jane ON Jan 1 1880
m. Gilbert James McDiarmid England, Nov 3 1871
McConnell Agnes L ON May 30 1882
McConnell Helen/Elenor M ON May 1 1884
McConnell Alice Annie ON Jan 28 1888
McConnell Bertha Pearl ON Sep 21 1890
McConnell Samuel Garfield ON Apr 28 1893
McConnell Alexander Howard ON May 3 1898

The Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society lists this one possible name;

Gilbert James MCDIARMID, - interred 29 Dec 1927
buried in the Edmonton 7 ave cemetery. His plot was paid by a Goldie May McDiarmid, but there is no grave stone and no McDiarmid buried near him.

Did that 1906 & 1911 census give any legal address of where in Strathcona they lived at?

There are 2 Alexander McConnell in the AGS Homestead Index that would be in the Strathcona Dist.

If the Research Committee is still working, they may be able to get you an obit for the above Gilbert.

Hi,
Something must have gone wrong, I'll try again.

The Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society lists this possible name;

Gilbert James McDIARMID, - interred 29 Dec 1927, in the 7th Ave Edmonton cemetery. The plot was paid for by Goldie May McDiarmid, seems to be no head stone and no other McDiarmid buried nearby.

You can find an Alexander Mcconnell on the AGS Homestead Index, http://abgensoc.ca/

Then I also found this on the AGS Master Name Index;
Alexander MCCONNELL, 14 Feb 1842 - 10 Oct 1914 buried in the Hacket cemetery near Lamont in plot 02,05,a.
Then on the next plot 02,05,b, I find a Mrs. MCCONNELL but no dates. So she is probably buried elsewhere.

So now we do not have the same born date for Alexander. That could be due to the old grave stone that makes it hard to see if it is 1842 or 1847.

Looks like Alexanders homestead was about 15 miles from this cemetery. Notice on his homestead record is (died 1914).

They are having problems, but maybe the Research Services Committee can help you further.
Peter.

Coleen, I don't know if you are still working on this family or not, but I think you are as I came upon a WorldConnect tree with a 2012 date. I am trying to find out what happened to Alice Annie McConnell. I belive she first married an Albert Bowling, who took suddenly ill and died in Fernie BC in 1935. Did she marry H. Burns after that time? Thanks for anything you can help me with. Ruth

Yes, I'm still working on them. Another online db has Alexander's name as James Alexander, with the death date I have--I accepted the information as the source was a descendent of Agnes. However that source may have identified the wrong person, as they have the name as James Alexander--which is likely wrong, as Alexander had a younger brother named James.

This death record seems to be the right Lena:
Vital Event Death Registration
Name: Lenah Mcconnell
Event Date: 1914 10 5 (Yr/Mo/Day)
Age: 56
Gender: female
Event Place: New Westminster

Sister Eleanor Maud also seems to have died in BC during Oct 1914. Was that the year of the 'flu epidemic?

I believe I got Burns as a last name from one of Martha's descendants, who only knew her as Annie Burns. So Stella's theory is probably spot on.

If either of you is a descendant, could we share more info? Privately? Thanks.

Hi, Not Family connect4ed
Filmed Registration of death for
Lena McCONNELL age 56 Oct 5 1914 in New Westminser BC
may show cause of Death.

What was the surname for the sister
Eleanor Maud also decd in BC in 1914.?

Filmed Registration can be viewed at the Provincial Archive in Victoria BC - Some Public & University OLibraries in BC - as well - any LDS Family history centres - [films may need to be brought in for a small fee
A request to the BC MJessage Board requesting transcript of information from the filmed Registrtion - would be helpful.

Obituary if one was published may mention names and locations of other family members at the time.
though many are very basic - usually just a notice of death in the classified section - with date of death and place where funeral , burial. name of funeral home in charge.

Flu was in 1918/1919 worldwide.

There are persons at the Message Board for British Columbia - who offer help.
transcribe registrations - search for Obituaries.
I would offer help - but commitments to family - friends - takes me hours away each way - where I would do research - Library closed by the time I get back into town.
If Posting. Surnames in Capital Letters on the Subject line - for persons in BC.
