I would love hear from my distant cousins or any fellow genealogists who can help me confirm information or fill in any blanks I have regarding my great grandfather’s brother William C. (Charles?) Proctor and his family in Alberta.

What I know so far is:

Born about 1 Oct. 1874 in Ontario – Probably in Euphrasia Township, Grey County, Ontario, near the village of Kimberley. Son of William Proctor and Mary Webb

In the 1906 census there is a 32 year old William Proctor listed at Stettler, Alberta, who was not married.

Married Mary Ellen Clark

Died Aug. 1953 – An obituary found in the Grey County Ontario Archives dated 27 Aug. 1953 states: “MEAFORD WOMAN LOST BROTHER IN THE WEST – While she was completing plans for a visit with her brother Wm. C. Proctor, of Stettler, Alta., Mrs. John R. Randle received the sad news of his sudden passing. Mrs. Randle expected to leave on Monday for the West. Word came Tuesday evening that her brother had passed away earlier in the day. Another sister, Mrs. Richard Solomon also resides in Meaford.”
Children: Gordon, William, John & Helen

I can share the information I have about this family’s roots in Ontario and England.

Regards,
Dale Proctor

Dale, I was raised north of Stettler and had Proctors for neighbors. John Proctor was the head of the family. Perhaps you would like pictures of headstones? I no longer live there, but have family who do. If you would like I can talk to my older sister and see if she has information. She lives in Stettler.

Hi Linda - I would be greatful for any kind of information received. In Nov. 2005 I wrote a letter to a Lorne Proctor of Stettler who I believe is John's son. Either Lorne isn't related to this family or he isn't interested in our shared family history as he didn't contact me. I was of course disappointed by this but that's how it goes.

I managed to learn a quite bit more about this branch of family from the local history book "Red Willow Reflections" which was very nice.

Here is a summary of what I know at present:

William Charles Proctor son of Jonas Proctor of Pickering Township, Old Ontario County, Ont.

Born 1 Oct. 1874 (1 Oct. 1873 according to Red Willow Reflections

1898 - Went west and resided at Edmonton, Alberta, working as a tailor.

1900 – 1914 resided in the Buffalo Lake, Alberta area.

1902 – Homesteaded the NE 30-40-19-W4M near Stettler, Alberta

In the 1906 census there is a 32 year old William Proctor listed at Stettler, Alberta, who was not married.

Married Mary Ellen Clark on 2 July 1908 (b. 1878 – d. 1950 according to a RootsWeb query response)
Mary was born 19 Oct. 1879 according to Red Willow Reflections.

1915 – Built a house on their homestead and lived their until 1922. Eventually relocated their buildings to the SE 30-4-19-W4M which William had purchased.

Mary Ellen passed away 30 Jan. 1950.

William died 25 Aug. 1953 – An obituary found in the Grey County Archives dated 27 Aug.

William’s tombstone apparently reads 1873 – 1953 and he and his wife are both buried in the Liberal cemetery [according to a RootsWeb query response]

Children: Gordon, William, John & daughter Helen born 23 March 1912 in Stettler

Regards,
Dale

I will talk to my sister and see what she can find out. John Proctor was very close to my father, Lorne actually drove the school bus I rode on! I will see if we can find out if this is the family you are looking for. The land location will be of help.
