I've hit a brick wall with George (my great-great-great grandfather). He was born in about 1851 somewhere in Austria. He married Helen (Elena) Radomsky, she was born in 1861. They had three children Dmytro (Metro) Taszczak 1892, Mary Taschuk 1892 and John (Ivan) Taschuk 1897-1968. They moved to Canada in 1910 and settled in Smoky Lake Alberta (as did some other Radomskys who were born around the same time Elena was. They were almost certainly siblings). Any information on the Taschuks or Radomskys would be immensely appreciated as would any pictures or documents. Please reply soon. Thank you in advance!

The Master Surname Database (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society lists these names;

George TASCHUK, 1851 - interred 23 Apr 1937
Juliana TASCHUK, 1861 - 21 Mar 1938
Metro TASCHUK, 24 Sep 1892 - 24 Apr 1958 died Edmonton
Olyana TASCHUK, 1861 - 1938
all burials in the St Paraskovia Uk Gr Orth cemetery near Vilna.

Juliana and Olyana may be the same person, one name from the head stone, the other from cem records.

And this,
Ivan (John) TASCHUK, 1897 - 1968 plot 06,28
Paraska TASCHUK, 1901 - 1983 plot 06,27
burial in the Holly Ascension Uk Gr Orth cemetery, Smoky Lake.

Do you have an Ancestry.com account? I did find census records for 1916 for Taszczuk. One set is for George, Helen and John. Another is for Metro, Sanchira (wife) and Basil (age 1). It only states they were from Bukowina, and that they immigrated in 1911 (but there can be many mistakes on these old census records).

I also found the passenger list when the family came over, under the name Tasczuk. The arrived on July 11, 1910 in Quebec on the vessel Montezuma, which left from Antwerp, Belgium. It does say there destination was Vegreville, but it does not say where they were from. Right after their 5 names is Tanasko & Maria Tasczuk (not the same Maria as George's daughter) and they are listed as "returned Canadians".

I have an ancestry account but only a free version. Is it possible you could send the 1916 census to me at brandontaschuk@gmail.com? It would be greatly appreciated. I would ask for the ship manifest but I actually found it today after doing a little research. I don't suppose the governments of eastern Europe kept records did they? Even if they did probably not online. Anyway thanks for your help.

I submitted a request to Alberta gen research last week but they still haven't replied. George died in 1937 in smoky lake and Elena was enterred 1938 in smoky lake (I'm assuming she died same year and place too). Do you know how long it takes on average for them to investigate requests? Do they only email you when you've found something or when they assign voluteers you assignment. Thanks to all, you have been of quite some assistance.

The correct spelling for this name is Тащук (Tashchuk - Uk.); (Taszczuk - Pol.).

Most of the immigrants from Bukovina settled in Smoky Lake. So therefore, your ancestors, Tashchuk and Padomsky (Радомський) came from what is now known as Chernivetska, now part of Ukraine.

I checked for both family names, and there are still individuals by that name living in the province of Chernivetska.

What you have to find out now, is the name of the village they immigrated from. Then you can check the LDS records to work on your family tree. And better yet, I can locate your family, in Ukraine... would that not be great!

Yes, that would be great! I know they came from the village of Strilets'kyy Kut in the Chernivtsi region. If there are people living near there I would really love to have their information! Thank you for your help, it is really appreciated.

Sincerely, Brandon Taschuk.

In your letter, include your e-mail address.... one of them will have family with a computer and internet connection.

Strilets’kyi Kut has a population of 2000+, and there are 300+ Tashchuk’s living there. I will send you a few addresses of the older men living there.

This village will not need street names and numbers, due to the fact that it is not large enough. The postmaster knows everyone in the village.

Addresses: (The same for all names: 1-4).

There are only a few Radomsky's living in Strilets’kyi Kut. The oldest Radomsky living is Vasyl, son of Ivan (John), born 1936. Here is his address.

Wow this is appreciated more than you can know. Is there anything I have to do in particular to send a letter outside of Canada (particularly to the Ukraine)? What language should I write in Russian or Ukrainian? I have one more question though: how do you know this or find this out? I found my Kapustinsky family after months of research but could never find my Taschuk side...until know. Thank you so much for this information!

Sincerely, Brandon Taschuk.
