My grandfather was Petro Palichuk, my grandmother was Elena Rubuliak, and my father was Orest Peter Palechuk. Any info on my family would be much appreciated. I am especially interested in finding out the area in which my grandfather homesteaded, as well as where in the Ukraine he came from. Thanks a lot!

My husband's father was born in Smoky Lake, AB in 1916 his name was Tanasi (Thomas) Palechuk. I think the original spelling was either Paliczuk or Palicjzuk. His parents came from Bukovina Austria. They may have been related. Hope this helps.

I have found a number of Palechuk-related families on the newly-released 1906 census for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba at http://www.archives.ca/08/08_e.html.

Source for everything that follows is:
Census of the Northwest Provinces, 1906
Reference: RG31, Statistics Canada
Microfilm Reel T-18362
Province: Alberta
District: Edmonton (#20)

(Note: I have calculated approximate birth years within [square brackets] - this was not on the original census. Also, the census handwriting was hard to read in places, so I've had to make my best guess for a few entries.)

(Household 1: TKACZUK)
-----------------------------------
Sub District: #11
Page: 7, Line: 30, Dwelling: 56
Census Taken: June 29nd??, 1906

I believe this is Wasylyna Palechuk and her Palechuk children who have been recorded under their stepfather's last name. I say this because the names match names I know as being in the Wasylyna Palechuk family:

- TKACZUK, Tanasko, Head, Male, Married, 50-something?, born Austria, to Canada 1899, Wostok, 28-55-17-4
(note: Wostok is south of the N. Sask. River)
- TKACZUK, Wasylyna, Wife, Female, Married, 45, [1861], born Austria, to Canada 1902
(all children also born in Austria and came to Canada in 1902)
- TKACZUK, Manoli, Son, Male, Single, 20, [1886]
[note: known as Mike]
- TKACZUK, Peter, Son, Male, Single, 16 or 18, [1888-1890]
- TKACZUK, Maria, Daughter, Female, Single, 15, [1891]
- TKACZUK, Veronia, Daughter, Female, Single, 12, [1894]

-----------------------------------
(Household 2: PALICZUK)
-----------------------------------
Sub District: #10
Page: 13, Line: 18, Dwelling: 138 Census Taken: July 7, 1906

Is this the same Manoli Palechuk as above? (Sometimes people do get counted more than once on a census, although it's not supposed to happen.)

- PALICZUK, Manoli, Head, Male, Single , Age 20, [born c. 1886], born Austria, to Canada 1903, Pakan, 12-59-17-4
[Note: Pakan is north of N. Sask. River]

-----------------------------------
(Household 3: LAZARUK)
-----------------------------------
Sub District: #7
Page: 19, Line: 17, Dwelling: 144 Census Taken: July 4 or 9, 1906

I believe this is the family of Iwona Lazaruk Ratsoy who married Peter/Petro Palechuk (her second marriage, his first)

- LAZARUK, Teodor, Head, Male, Married, Age 41, [born c. 1865], born Austria, to Canada 1899, Whitford, 20-57-15-4
(note: Whitford is south of the N. Sask. River)
- LAZARUK, Nastasia, Wife, Female, Married, 36, [1870], born Austria, to Canada 1899
- LAZARUK, Iwona, D, Female, Single, 14, [1892], born Austria, to Canada 1899
- LAZARUK, Wasel, S, Male, Single, 13, [1893], born Austria, to Canada 1899
- LAZARUK, Oleksa, S, Male, Single, 9, [1897], born Austria, to Canada 1899
- LAZARUK, Iwan, S, Male, Single, 7, [1899], born Alberta
- LAZARUK, Domka, D, Female, Single, 4, [1902], born Alberta
- LAZARUK, Ilija, S, Male, Single, 2, [1904], born Alberta
- LAZARUK, Petro, S, Male, Single, ?, [born c. 1906], born Alberta

-----------------------------------
(Household 4: RUBULIAK)
-----------------------------------

Sub District: #10
Page: 20, Line: 29, Dwelling: 204 Census Taken: July 12, 1906

- I believe this is the family of Elana/Helen Rubuliak who married Peter/Petro Palechuk (his second marriage)

- RUBULIAK, Nikoli, Head, Male, Married, Age 36, [born c. 1870], born Austria, to Canada 1899, Pakan, 36-58-17-4
[Note: Pakan is north of N. Sask. River]
- RUBULIAK, Anetsa, Wife, Female, Married, 24, [1882], born Austria, to Canada 1899
- RUBULIAK, Wasel, Son, Male, Single, 6, [1900], born Alberta
- RUBULIAK, Daketsa, Daughter, Female, Single, 4, [1902], born Alberta
- RUBULIAK, Elana, Daughter, Female, Single, 3, [1903], born Alberta

Now here's a flash from the past. This goes back to 2002 when you posted a message on Ancestry. How quickly 10 years passes. I started a tree then and have now picked up researching our family again.

You are right in your facts.
Wasylina Huculak/Palechuk came to Canada in 1902 as a widow with 4 children: Manoly, Petro, Maria and Verona.
You are a descendant of Manoly and I'm from Petro.
If you are still interested in our Family History please reply.
Perhaps then we can exchange personal e-mail addresses and continue our discussion.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thx.
